The more knowledge we have of the Word of God the more guiding we have...
I understand how more knowledge can create better choices/decisions, but there are other ways.
What I am referring to is that certain things are not so logically reduced such as 'for the better good'.

Better still:
Having the Holy Spirit within you, how do you know you are doing the right thing?

Having the Holy Spirit within you, how do you know you are doing the right thing?
Reading scripture in 1 Cor 11:1 we read: Be ye followers of me (Paul), even as I also am of Christ.
Why? Rom 2:16. In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.
This is the gospel given to Paul by our risen Savior by revelation according to:
Gal 1:11 But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man.
Gal 1:12 For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.

As the result how did Pare fare?
2Ti 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
2Ti 4:5 But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.
2Ti 4:6 For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.
2Ti 4:7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:
2Ti 4:8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

Php 3:8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,
Php 3:9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

...
Php 3:9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:
Much of Paul's gospel is in keeping the faith. This last verse points to having faith in what is revealed to our mind via the Spirit of Truth (Holy Spirit), is it not?
If so, how do we know that what we are discerning is from the Holy Spirit or from some other thoughts such as our self, or from the spiritual enemy? So if we are urged or told to do something, then how do we know we are about to do the right thing?

God gave me a conscience.
That is a good point, and much can be determined by what is the right thing to do. However, I feel that conscience is largely referring to what has already been learnt and or even passed on in on's culture, traditions, rules and laws. I think conscience is a bit lacking when it comes to the finer subtleties which are not so obviously based on fear, guilt, remorse, shame, etc. Sometimes we have to make a decision, or even not to make a decision which comes to mind without knowing why at the present time. Almost a premonition of sorts. Such as waiting instead of initiating, where the later would have been the wrong thing to do at the time.

So on these subtleties, how are we to know if, as in my example, to wait or to initiate? If we are of two minds (stop or go) how do we know which is right?

Only the innocent look surprised when handcuffed. Most of the others show an expression of regret, mostly for being caught, and not so much for what they have done. So most of them already knew they were doing the wrong thing but hoping it would stay hidden in the dark. But once exposed, where others could see, their self-imposed denial vanished, and no longer hidden.
This is what it will be like when standing in the the realm of Truth. Within that realm, all our denials will become known, for our mind no longer operates, as it does in this realm, to block it. And whatever is left is true, which for most is not much in comparison.

In most cases involving non-obvious choices, I don't think you do know until after the fact - sometimes long after the fact. It would be wonderful if the Holy Spirit always pointed us in the right direction, but I don't think the Christian walk is that simple. The basic Christian principles, together with conscience and intuition (a term that can include the nudging of the Holy Spirit), are the most reliable guides we have, but some choices and decisions are still genuinely difficult.

I am facing a life decision right now that has very large consequences for myself and others. It isn't a moral conundrum, in the sense of one decision being morally right and the other morally wrong. I have of course prayed about it, including the standard operating procedure of asking for some sign, but ultimately it's a decision that I will simply have to make. I hope to at least have a sense of inner peace before I make the final decision. I may not know for five years whether I made a good or bad decision. I think I simply have to trust that God will protect me from making a genuinely disastrous decision (or perhaps protect me after I do make a genuinely disastrous decision, which has happened more than once - although I have always been able to see in retrospect than even the bad decision served a purpose).

We were threatened once with a firearm while outside the abortion clinic protesting.

The cops showed up and then came over and told us how sorry the guy was for threatening us and then dragged my friend aside and lectured and threatened to arrest him for blocking the sidewalk.

You are talking about criminal arrest and my comment was about what happens when you stand up to injustice.

...although I have always been able to see in retrospect than even the bad decision served a purpose).
So while in faith, and by those in faith, there is not right or wrong due to acceptance. Only those not in faith see a division between right and wrong due to resistance. Accepting God's-will as opposed to resisting God's-will for us in all things.

This sounds good...
"Due to acceptance".

Difficult decisions require that one feels some sort of peace with the final choice.
Then, if we take God with us, it will work for the good if we work for Him.
Then, in looking back, we find that we've served a purpose or discovered something important.
I think Runner is referring to this.
IOW Romans 8:28

Context and Discernment filtered through conscience.
This is how you are able to separate what is wrong from what is right.

Wrong from right is easy!
What if they're two rights but will affect different persons?
It could be difficult at times.

We can only hope we are doing the right thing, but yet be willing to accept the consequences if we are wrong.
