How did Abraham know it was God who was telling him to take Isaac to the altar and sacrifice him?

He knew before when God told him he was going to have a son. And when he had a son he Heard God speak again. So when he was taking Isaac up to the mountain, he told his servants to wait because " THEY " ( he and Issac ) were going to come back. So he knew if he slew Issac, that God was going to do a miracle resurrection.....
Genesis 22: 4 On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.
5 And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass, and I and the lad will go yonder; and we will worship, and come again to you.

"Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on."

That was genius thinking.

In Cannan it was common practice that people would sacrifice there children to Moloch. Abraham was surounded by people that were convinced that the greatest thing they can do is sacrifice there children to there god.

Lots of critics claim god is crooked for telling Abraham to sacrifice his Son, and Abraham for being ready to saceifice his Son, but the take-away message for the surounding people and culture was that Abraham was just as devoted as them and was willing to do what his God commands him, but the difference between them and Abraham is that Abrahams God did not want him to sacrifice. Abraham God told him to stop. Abrahams God provides his own sacrifice.

God spoke to me audibly one time. I had never heard His voice before, but I knew it was God talking. I just knew it with every ounce of my being...the presence I felt...was unmistakable.

When God strolls into the room and begins speaking, there's no doubt who He is...

How did Abe know? faith

Heb_11:17 By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,

How was Issac Abe's only begotten Son as the scripture says?. He had Ishmael who the scriptures point to as his first begotten Son as he was the Father. He had two Sons.

It doesn't make sense.

I could understand one and only son as in meaning Issac was the only Son with him at that time as Ishmael was sent out with the goats.

This morning when I made my coffee I thought I would go ahead and post the same answer. you had better be careful... thinking like a veteran can get you into trouble. :thumbsup

Actually God changed Abram's name to Abraham so Isaac was first born to Abraham .. Abraham went on to have other offspring Genesis 25:5-6

Same way Noah knew it was God who told him to build the ark.

Agreed. There's different ways of saying the same thing loll. Anyone who has ever heard the voice of GOD will tell you the same thing. You just know. It's not the faith, you know. He lets you know .

As I think more and more about it the OP might be somewhat of a good question.

God told Abraham to sacrifice his son....yet there are several verses that indicate that God is against child sacrifice. I don't know if any predate Abraham.
If Abraham knew God was against child sacrifice....then as the OP asked...How did Abraham know it was God who was telling him to take Isaac to the altar and sacrifice him?

But issac was not his first begotten son. Ishmael was. Thats what the scripture says. You can say Issac was his first born Son when his name changed or one and only Son in a way, but he was not his first begotten Son. If Hagar gave birth to Ishmael and Abe was the Father then that is a begotten son. Issac and Ishmael are begotten sons and Ishmael was Abe's first begotten Son.

Only begotten Son means only Fathered Son.

Job 1:2 KJV
And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.

Job 42:10 KJV
And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before.

Job 42:13 KJV
He had also seven sons and three daughters.

Job had his first children reserved for the resurrection, and Job had his 2nd set of 10 children. 20 children / twice as many.

Abraham knew you do not lose children you pray for.

How did he know? I am a redneck from Mississippi. ??

Genesis 22:2 .. Correct, I say the name change was significant .. The covenant God made with Abraham was a very big and important event imo ..

One and only begotten son even after a name change and promise and child with another wife still doesnt make sense.

And as that Genesis verse says take your Son, your only Son Issac, who you love. Not one and only begotten son.

Anyhow there is always translation errors in different versions but the message always stays the same, so that means Gods word doesnt change, as long as Gods message and point does not change then its all good. Whats a few translation errors. Big, large, huge, same thing who cares. Bottles or wineskins?, what exact word did Jesus say?, it don't really matter because the message is most important. Its not corruption of God's word.

Ok, issac was the one and only first begotten son with Sarah. I guess that works.
