The problem when I had my ear pierced higher up in the cartilage is that it took a very long time to heal.Up to a year.

Ms Kathi: Yes, well there is great variation in healing times, depending on the placement for the piercing. Cartilage is like navel in its healing time, whereas the earlobes will often heal within approximately 6 weeks. Often, depending on the piercing, people don't always realize what they are committing themselves to, in terms of daily cleaning and healing times, etc.

Blessings.

I knew a girl who had hoop earrings on and she was in soccer.Someone accidently got ahold of her lobe and totally ripped the earring out and her ear lobe.

Ms Kathi: Ouch! This is anyway why for young people who do sports in school, etc. there is often a fairly narrow window of weeks during the year when they can actually get piercings.

Blessings.

I think that coaches should not allow jewelry when playing sports.

Ms Kathi: True and it can be reasonably straightforward to police if the jewelry and piercings - in particular, earrings - are visible. Some are not, of course, and for example although some young women doing athletics have short tops for comfort, others have covered midriffs. It's not always obvious who is wearing what jewelry, esp. with something like a transparent navel or tongue ring. Whatever...

Blessings.

kiwidan: Sounds like your holes might have closed up.

Some people don't wear rings any more and yet the holes can still be used. (Ms Kathi: some people who don't usually wear their rings will occasionally put them in to make sure the holes don't disappear.)

Blessings.

It might depend on the earring.Dangle earrings I would think would not be very safe.

The holes in my ears closed up very fast.I have heard of people keeping just a thread in the hole inbetween wearing earrings so they do not close up.

Ms Kathi:

I guess with you it happened before you even actively decided whether you really wanted the holes to close up.

Anyway, I liked your reference to the women who assumed that having an asymmetrical cartilage piercing was evidence that a hypothetical ring the other side was missing!

Blessings.

When my daughter was married about 11/2 years ago I wore clip on earrings. They pinched and hurt my ears though.

Ms Kathi: Well, in the long run, getting them pierced hurts less, overall. Earrings for women at a wedding are often thought to be more or less obligatory, and I guess some people would say, why put oneself through such a lot of discomfort with clip-ons on special occasions when one naturally expects, and is almost expected to, wear earring? Having them clicked in with a gun or run through with a needle is often the more comfortable solution.

(Two cents'.)

I'm sure your daughter's wedding was lovely, anyway!

Blessings.

kiwidan & Ms Kathi: These days, at formal occasions such as weddings, the men who already have their ears pierced will sometimes insert rings, too. Seems to be a bit of trend.

Blessings.

I don't see as many male ear piercings as I used to.But I do see it when they have those huge holes in their ears.Almost like you have seen in Africa.

Ms Kathi: Well, women, also, do gauge their ears.

Sometimes you can't actually see if the earring is actually a plug, until you see the clasp.

They say that around a 2g may be the point of no return before the hole won't go back to it's previous state. It varies from one person to another, of course.

Blessings, f
