    Another simple math

Are you really sure about that? I'm a math and computer science major and I've seen a bunch of books on related subjects like physics and chemistry, and I can't imagine anywhere where PEMDAS doesn't apply. It's practically part of the definition of multiplication and addition. Most of...

    Another simple math

    Sorry, it should have been 1 + (1+1/4)/(1+1) - 13/8. I accidentally left out the division sign before the (1+1). This then gives 1 + (5/4)/2 - 13/8 1 + 5/8 - 13/8 0.

    Another simple math

    It's 0, assuming I didn't make a dumb mistake. The (1/4) / (1/4) at the bottom just reduces to 1, so we can ignore it. We get 1 + (1 + 1/4)(1 + 1) - 13/8 = 1 + 5/8 - 13/8 = 0.

    Math for cf.neters

I concur that the answer is 20. I'm currently majoring in math, and I would be shocked if there were any field in which the answer was not understood to be 20. (However, thisnumbersdisconnected does have more exposure to other fields than I do.)

    Math for cf.neters

    Yes, it's definitely 20, since it's (4 x 4) + (4 x 4) + 4 - (4 x 4) = 16 + 16 + 4 - 16 = 20.

    Simple but not so simple

The answer is (10 choose 2) = 10 * 9 / 2 = 45. Each of the 10 people shakes hands with 9 others, but this counts every handshake twice, once for each person, so we need to divide 90 by 2.

[__ Prayer __] Help - Prayers for my business and hence my bread and butter

Lord, please give him the peace that comes from knowing he has a place in heaven, regardless of what happens on earth. Please help not to worry about what will happen, but to prayerfully trust in you, and please provide for him in this difficult time. Please give him more students, and give him...

    Math Paradox

Sorry, I sort of messed this up! The questions she's supposed to be asked is, "How likely do you think it is that the coin came up heads?" (If the coin came up heads, she's only awakened once.) Also, yes, is aware of the setup of the experiment, so she knows that it can only be Monday or...

    Math Paradox

Here's a pretty interesting math paradox: Sleeping Beauty is going to take part in an experiment. Without showing her on Sunday night, the scientist is going to flip a fair coin. Then, he will put her to sleep with a drug that erases her short-term memory, so that when she wakes up she doesn't...

    Solve this

According to standard math conventions, the answer is 7: you have to do the multiplication first, and then you go left-to-right.

    Women Teachers in School

Thanks for your response everyone! Yes, I have definitely encountered many very intelligent, well-qualified women teachers: I just wasn't sure if being a student was allowing them too much authority over me in a way that was unbiblical. However, if I'm understanding what everyone's been saying...

    Women Teachers in School

Hi, In 1 Timothy 2:12, when Paul says that women shouldn't have authority over men, is he talking only about the church, or would it apply in other settings as well? I have some women as teachers in my classes, and now that I think about it I'm not sure if that's something I should avoid or not.

    Secular Colleges

Thank you very much for your responses. I'm at a school with a technical emphasis, and almost all my classes are in theoretical subjects like math where worldviews have pretty much no effect, so I'm not really worried about false ideas affecting me directly. However, I was wondering more if...

Thanks for the replies everyone, I'm enjoying the forums here. Regarding the question about math, I'm still exploring different areas of math so it's hard for me to say. I like analysis, but because I'm studying computer science I get more of the discrete math side. Analysis seems more...
