I turned 57 today.

But, didn't get the day off or anything. In my new role at work, I am ordered to go to IWCE, our industry's big convention. I am not surprised that I'm going to IWCE, but what did catch me off guard is when I was told (a month ago) that I'd be speaking at IWCE on behalf of JVCKenwood.

My presentation will be on one of the newest communications standards and the new product line we are introducing this year that will be our company's product offering for the new standard.

I like public speaking and teaching, but this was a challenge; I'd not dealt with this protocol before and almost no one in the office knows anything about it, either. This is all part of the plan to make me the R&D "authority" on this product and standard. It's been fun learning. I got my 70 slide powerpoint presentation done just today. I guess I'm about ready.

Wow, that is totally cool. First happy birthday and second congrats on being picked to give a presentation. It's a pretty big deal when our skills are recognized. Feels good. Sounds like electronics? I've had Kenwood products before and JVC too. I'm assuming they merged? I'm probably behind the times.

Yea we (Kenwood) merged with JVC a few years ago. I'm in the "Land Mobile" sector of the communications division in the R&D department. We make those radios and systems the police and fire people use.

But I did get a JVC head unit for the car. :)

Is it possible to record it and let us hear it? I would especially like for your sister to hear it if she is still able to.. :wave2
 
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. I'd not thought of that.
Given that it is for our dealers only, not for anyone outside our dealer network, I'm thinking that, even if the equipment exists to record (and Im sure it does) in the facility - I'm thinking corporate would not want it recorded.

But I will talk to the product planner that would have the authority to tell me "yes or no".
 
I came to Vegas all looking forward to my job here.

I had no idea what a horrible place the "Hard Rock" hotel and casino would be. The crowd it attracts is rude, vulgar and vile.

My room: Phone works only in speaker mode, TV worked on 11 channels for one night, then quit working altogether, no cups/glasses/etc in the room. TWO Towels, no bath mat in the room. Tiny desk (I'm here to work, they have an attached series of convention halls and HUGE conference rooms - we work in our rooms and they know it.)
And my non-smoking room smells the same as the hallway - like someone overhauled a tractor engine in here.

Only positives: Huge walk in shower, second most comfortable bed in a hotel I've slept on.

Oh, and try eating on $60 a day here. If you can, and usually do, live in burgers and fries, you are going to be eating horrible, cold burgers and fries. If you don't eat like that - well, sucks to be you.
 
It's been quite a week. Overall, not bad - but Vegas is a hell hole in every aspect I can think of.

My presentation went well, and I scored high marks from those who have spoken to me about it, one VP and several senior Japanese within the company. Tuesday was a high point for me, for sure, but a long day.

I really just want to go home and I fly home tomorrow - to Atlanta, a city where I85 has collapsed and traffic will be AWFUL tomorrow.

On a better note, this happened today as the convention was coming to a close, I was talking to someone from one of our vendors....I'd never expected it. A job offer. Right out of left field. I guess the best interviews are the ones you don't know are happening. I have no desire to make ANY change, but still, it is quite something - at age 57, I don't look for jobs, they look for me.
 
I sure wish I was looking for a job. I'm telling you, NO ONE is learning to do what I do. No one is TEACHING it, either.
I blame, in part, the industry itself. But I also blame those who somehow think that I.T. is the only career opportunity out there for technically or mathematically minded people. It take some real work to learn RF (that is, 'wireless' or radio theory and engineering practices), but once you get to where you understand what you are doing, you never will be unemployed.

I was told, when I was 22, by a senior technician that was retiring: "You will, now, NEVER be out of a job. They will come looking for you." I've never made really GOOD money, but I've never made ZERO money OR collected unemployment. And I"ve been in the industry 35 years now.

And I learned most of it self study and in my room as a teenager and then young adult. Of course, I'm still learning.

I have an offspring in your field. Now, after 3 moves up, this offspring is earning well over 6 figures per year. Still enjoys the challenges of the industry.

When you were told by that senior technician that you would never be out of a job, and that they would come looking for you, you were wise to pay heed. His words were and are true.
 
If I had to describe myself in a single word, it would be:

"Doesn't care much for arbitrary limitations"
