What is the difference between quenching the Spirit and grieving the Spirit?
Hi Brother gr8grace3. I hope the following explanation helps a bit.
The word Quench means to extinguish in the following scriptures.
Mat 12:20 A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory.
Eph 6:16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. (Notice that it is faith which is associated with the power to bear, and/or encourage us)
1Th 5:19 Quench not the Spirit.

What is it that the Holy Spirit is doing in our lives?
Joh 14:17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
Joh 15:26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me.
Joh 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

Then we come to grieving the Holy Spirit as relating to our walk in Christ.
Eph 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
Many admonitions are given as to things we allow of our old nature that can grieve Him.
Eph 4:22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation (manner of life) the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
Eph 4:23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
Eph 4:24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
Eph 4:25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.
Eph 4:26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:
Eph 4:27 Neither give place to the devil.
Eph 4:28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.
Eph 4:29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
Eph 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
Eph 4:31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:
Eph 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

Thanks for the great list of verses regarding the Holy Spirit. I was hoping for an explanation of tshe difference between grieving and quenching.

My understanding is that grieving deals with sin in our lives, which seems to be how you understand the word. I also understand that quenching deals with false ideas, incorrect doctrines, and the like. Is that your view of quenching?

Thanks.

Good morning Brother FreeGrace. To some extent I agree with that also, but I'm more of the opinion it's initially dealing with the gifts of the Spirit dealing with faith especially.

Gifts - My slant
Spiritual gifts mentioned in 1 Corinthians Chapter Twelve only given exclusively to the body of Christ by the Holy Spirit.

Though these gifts in Romans are used in the Church, every gift given to man is from God whether they are Christians or not, and as this study will bring out is the fact that as Christians we possess a special talent to be used in the Church also. For instance one with the gift of ruling will not have the same ability for serving as the one that has that gift. A preacher with the gifts of mercy will give the same message as another possibly without condemning.

In Romans Chapter Twelve we will posses one of those gifts, whereas in 1 Corinthians Chapter Twelve the Holy Spirit divides gifts as severally as He will. You may speak in tongues, prophesy, and also be given gifts of healing.
Do we apply the gifts given us or deny the Holy Spirit the ministry He leads us? :wave2

Grieving the Holy Spirit would be going against what was written in Ephesians 4:22-32 that Eugene has already posted. Grieving the Holy Spirit brings much sorrow to God as we knowing the truth turn around and do that which is wrong in the eyes of God. Quenching the Holy Spirit is like putting a fire out that was once in you as you deny that which you once had. At one time you had a thirst for the word of God, but now are no longer thirsting as you grow cold towards the Holy Spirit.

Thanks Eugene.Always great to hear from you Brother.

In your faith and everyday life, what do you see as the difference between grieving the Spirit and quenching the Spirit?

IMO, The majority of believers in today's Church are quenching the Spirit and not grieving the Spirit. They are not necessarily sinning(grieving the Spirit) but they are following false doctrine, acting 'good' from the flesh...........and quenching the DIVINE good that the Spirit/Father/Lord Jesus Christ has planned for them. And Quenching TRUE doctrine that comes from growing in His grace and knowledge.
New American Standard Bible
"So you, too, outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

Rom 8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
It may just be me, but God impresses on me His will in certain circumstances, and as to quenching the Spirit of God I either yield or don't. I go on to believing again it has more to do with faith and exercising that given me to coming into the perfect, will of God for me. Paul said it like this in Rom 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Now grieving the Spirit is a whole different attitude that might be characterized by something akin to 1Co 5:1. It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife.
And there was judgment: 1Co 5:5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

When I was in the Catholic Church, there were sins of commission and sins of omission that might well describe the difference. In other words, quenching the Spirit by not doing something we know we should, and grieving the Spirit by doing that which we know to be wrong. :shrug

As to quenching the Spirit, could we use Jonah sent to Nineveh as an example of not obeying instruction given to him by God? Jon 1:2-3 Jon 1:3 But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.
But when Paul on the ship at sea in similar circumstances believed God in Act 27:25. Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me.

False doctrine, or mistaken such as the one eating for the Lord, and another not, but both are received of God?
Rom 14:1 Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations.
Rom 14:2 For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs.
Rom 14:3 Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him.
Blessings in Christ Jesus. :wave2

Excellent question and point!! Yes, it should be obvious that not using the gifts given would quench the Spirit. Thanks.

Paul makes a distinction between quenching the Spirit and grieving the Spirit. What is the distinction?

Eph 4:30~~New American Standard Bible
Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

1 Thess 5:19~~New American Standard Bible
Do not quench the Spirit;

What is the difference between quenching the Spirit and grieving the Spirit?
Eph 4:30 (don't grieve the HS) is one piece of a larger passage; Eph 4:25-32. Extracted from that context, the verse looses meaning.

Lets look at the entire thought.
Therefore, putting away lying, “Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,” for we are members of one another. "Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, nor give place to the devil.Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need. Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

Paul has listed both righteous behaviors as well as and sinful behaviors which "grieve the Holy Spirit" in a manner similar to the way that good behavior would gratify the hearts of a child's behavior while bad behavior of a child would grieve the child's parents.

I believe that is what Paul is talking about.

1 Thess 5:19 "Do not quench the Spirit;"

These words have also been lifted out of their context.
The complete thought is:
Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies. Test all things; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil.

It appears that Paul may have been referring to an attitude of disdain toward prophesy resulting in the silencing of prophets in the church at Thessaloniki. That would be "quenching" in a manner similar to the way that pouring water on a fire quenches it. There are denominations today which forbid such things as speaking or praying in tongues and may justify their ban on that gift of the Spirit by relegating it to the time of the apostles. That would be quenching the Spirit by not allowing people to act according to the gift which they were given by the Holy Spirit.

An important key to understanding any verse is to remember that VERSES DO NOT STAND ALONE. The verse numbers were added in the 1500's to help people find passages. VERSE NUMBERS DO NOT INDICATE THE BEGINNING OF A NEW THOUGHT SEPARATE FROM WHAT WAS WRITTEN BEFORE AND AFTER IT.

To understand what is being said; always read the entire passage and never just the verse.

That's my opinion and it's worth every penny you paid for it!

iakov the fool.

Tongues would be a perfect example of believers quenching the Spirit in today's church. Looks good, feels good............but it's people acting on their OWN emotions/feelings. Not overt sin(grieving the Spirit), but quenching the Spirit with their OWN good intentions and feelings. And denying the DIVINE good of the Spirit and true Doctrine.

Remember, verses don't stand alone. Read all the verse's and it's surrounding context. And you will see that tongues, in todays church, is invalid and based upon emotions/feelings for most. Demons are involved in some.

1 Cor 14:21~~New American Standard Bible
In the Law it is written, "BY MEN OF STRANGE TONGUES AND BY THE LIPS OF STRANGERS I WILL SPEAK TO THIS PEOPLE(Israel/Jew), AND EVEN SO THEY WILL NOT LISTEN TO ME," says the Lord.

Isaiah 28~~ 11Indeed, He will speak to this people
Through stammering lips and a foreign tongue,

14Therefore, hear the word of the LORD, O scoffers,
Who rule this people who are in Jerusalem,

Tongues were a sign and witness to the JEW For their Messiah......The Lord Jesus Christ.

In todays world, lucky if we even hear the Lords name or His finished work on the Cross in a 'tongues' conversation..........making it even more credible that tongues is QUENCHING the Spirit since the Spirit is ALL about bringing Glory to Christ and not Himself or created creatures.
John 16~~13“But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. 14“He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. 15“All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.

[edited] I don't believe that is the case in all instances.
What you describe is somewhat Paul chided the Corinthian church about. They were showing off. (As I see his comments.)
I have observed it as a kind of "cultural" behavior rather than the gift of the HS.
But when I pray, I pray in tongues. (not to be heard by others) It is profoundly effective.
And you will see that tongues, in todays church, is invalid
[edited]
God does not change.
Your "proof text" is not about the Gift of tongues.
It certainly does not limit it to Jews.
Paul's teaching on the gift of tongues is given to the GENTILE church at Corinth, not to Jews.
[edited]
tongues is QUENCHING the Spirit since the Spirit is ALL about bringing Glory to Christ and not Himself or created creatures.
[edited]
Paul told the Corinthian church " desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues." (1Co 14:39)

Great points, gr8grace3!

Also, all one has to do is observe the charismatic church service and compare it to what Paul described in 1 Cor 14.

Extinguishing The Spirit would be a better English rendering. When The Spirit is magnified it will speak the Truth through the vessel it has sealed, (1 Thes. 5:18-20), magnification of the Spirit or being filled with the Spirit can be quenched when you let self will to teach or your own understanding, when you should asked to be filled with the Spirit AND putting on the full armor of God.(Eph. 6:10-18). Study this prayerfully, this should answer your question (Spiritually), it will not make any sense carnally. And you can grieve the Spirit in much the same way

And there are branches of theology and denominations which teaches that the gifts of the spirit (or the "sign gifts) ended with the end of the apostolic period and, thereby, have effectively quenched the gifts of the Holy Spirit in their churches. In a manner similar to the court throwing prayer out of our schools, these have banned the Holy Spirit from their churches.
And we wonder why the USA is going down the toilet of socialist progressivism, materialism and paganism....

but don't mind me. ...just babbling

Please use scriptures and exegesis of them to prove points and refrain from personal comments.
What about the historic teaching of the chu8rch since scripture itself states that some portion of the teaching of the apostles was passed on orally?

Oral teaching references
Act 2:42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching
RO 10:17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.
GAL 3:2 I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by observing the law, or by believing what you heard? ……….. 5 Does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you because you observe the law, or because you believe what you heard?
EPH 1:13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,
EPH 6:19 Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.
PHP 4:9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me - put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.
COL 1:3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, 4 because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all the saints-- 5 the faith and love that spring from the hope that is stored up for you in heaven and that you have already heard about in the word of truth, the gospel 6 that has come to you. All over the world this gospel is bearing fruit and growing, just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and understood God's grace in all its truth
COL 1:22 … he has reconciled you by Christ's physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation-- 23 if you continue in your faith, established and firm, not moved from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.
1TH 2:13 And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is at work in you who believe.
1TH 4:1 Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. 2 For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. (This is a reference to oral teaching.)
2TH 2:15 So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.
1TI 3:14 Although I hope to come to you soon, I am writing you these instructions so that, 15 if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God's household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth. (The church is the pillar and foundation of faith, NOT the Bible)
2TI 1:13 What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus.
2TI 2:2 … the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others.
HEB 2:1 We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. 2 For if the message spoken by angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, 3 how shall we escape if we ignore such a great salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him.
JAS 1:22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it--he will be blessed in what he does.
1JN 1:1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched--this we proclaim concerning the Word of life………..3 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.
1JN 1:5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you:
1JN 2:7 Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard.
1JN 2:24
See that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.
1JN 3:11 This is the message you heard from the beginning:
1JN 4:3 but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.
2JN 1: 6 And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.
