We have varying opinions on this subject, really.

So after death what happens? Judgement follows? Some believe that we all shall wait, and when the SON returns, the dead shall rise first, and then the living shall join in the departure: then judgement takes place.

So which is the biblical procedure?

the Bible says
Hebrews 9:27
27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: i go by this scripture
Some believe that we all shall wait, and when the SON returns, the dead shall rise first, and then the living shall join in the departure: then judgement takes place.
i have heard that and in Revelations 20
11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.

12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

It's funny, I was just about to ask the same question.

2 Corinthians 5:6-8 is used by many to say when we die we immediately go to be with the Lord in heaven, but these verses do not mean that at all. If you go back to verse one and two in chapter 5 the tabernacle being spoken of is our fleshly body and when we are in the flesh we are separated from God because flesh and Spirit can not mix, Romans 8:6, 7. Sin separates us from God because God is a spirit and can only recognize his own children by what spirit is living in their hearts. We have to renew, rebirth – born again Gods Spirit within us in order to be called a child of God and see the kingdom of heaven, John 3:3-7. We now put off the old man (flesh) and put on the new man (Spirit), Colossians 3:1-17. We are renewed by the word of God and through the Holy Spirit teaching us of all things, John 14:26.

John 3:6 that which is born of the flesh is flesh and that which is born of the Spirit is Spirit. When we are in the flesh or at home in the body this is our natural carnal being. When we are in the Spirit allowing Gods Spirit to take over the flesh then we are in the presence of the Lord through the Holy Spirit that dwells in us.

God breathed life (spirit) into us, Genesis 2:7, that made us a living soul and what goes back to God when this physical body dies (returns to the dust of the ground) is that very spirit of life God gave us, Ecclesiastics 12:7. Only those of faith under the old covenant (OT) and those of faith under the new covenant through Christ Jesus (NT) will God take that spirit back and reserve it until Christ returns. At that time we are raised with a new glorified body, 1Corintians 15:51-58; 1Thessalonians 4:13-18, and then we are given back that spirit of life to have everlasting life with the Father.

According to John 3:13 no one has ever ascended into heaven other than Christ. Scripture says we sleep in the ground until the coming of the Lord. Those whose names are written in the Lambs Book of Life will be raised to everlasting life with God and those who names are not found will face Gods Great White Throne Judgment and will be cast into the lake of fire, Revelations 20:11-15.

imo there is death - then judgement to determine whether a person goes to be with the Lord or not
1. appointed once to die then the judgement - Hebrews 9:27
2. absent from the body is to be with the Lord - so we must go to be with the Lord as soon as we leave the body - 2 Corinthians 5:8 - 2 Corinthians 5:1 - Luke 23:43
3. and then we get new glorified bodies at the resurrection of the dead - 1 Corinthians 15:42-44 - 1 Corinthians 15:51-53
4. then there will be a judgement of everyone's deeds - good or bad - so that we can get our rewards, crowns, punishments. - Revelation 20:12 - Revelation 20:13

Here ya go:

Many teach that of 2 Corinthians 5:8 that it means we are literally with the Lord as soon as we leave this body, but that is not what it says.

Let me break each verse down from vs. 1-8 so you can understand the full context of what is being said.
2 Corinthians 5:1-8
vs. 1 is speaking about the tabernacle of God that is within us as we are the Temple of God, 1 Corinthians 3:16, 17, and when we physically die we will have eternal life with Him in the New Jerusalem

vs. 2 we desire to be in our new home, the New Jerusalem, that will be ushered down from heaven at the end of days, Rev 21

vs. 3 we are clothed in Gods righteousness as we will not be found naked, Isaiah 61:10

vs. 4 We are the Temple of God, but yet we do have burdens as we still live in this fleshly body waiting for immortality when Christ returns, 1 Corinthians 15:51-54

vs. 5 basic as we have Gods Spirit dwelling in us as we need to walk in the Spirit and not in the flesh

vs. 6 we are confident knowing that if we are walking in the flesh we are absent from God because flesh and Spirit can not mix, Galatians 5:17

vs. 7 we walk by faith, which is Christ Jesus as we seek those things from above and not the things of this world, Colossians 3:1-4

vs. 8 we are confident if we are walking in the Spirit of God (Holy Spirit) we are no longer following the lust of the flesh, 1 John 2:16

The great white throne is not our judgement. Is for those in hades until the heaven and earth pass away and there is no place found for them. They were judged by there works.

Some say in John, Jesus says no man has ever ascended into heaven except Christ so no one is in heaven, but he had not finished his work at that time.

He went to the heart of the earth, the rhelm of the dead, hades, and said Hi to Moses, Abraham, Noah and David and everyone else who was in the peaceful compartment of hades, and he opened the gate for them and set them free and took them with him.

Unless everyone still goes to hades until the day of judgement.

Hebrews 2:14

i know the great white throne is not for the saved please

To all of you saying that we don't go to be judged right away when we die, I'm just curious. What about the thief that was with Jesus when He died on the cross? Didn't He say something about that day he'd be with Him in paradise?

If your lucky and loved, after you die there's a funeral. Outside of that, what happens to us is God's discretion.

If we wait for God's return then that might be a time to be tested on faith by waiting patiently and not losing hope over the centuries waited for Jesus to return. Or conversely, if we didn't believe, that wait might be a means to give us time to be saved. Regardless, there is a few verses that hint of not waiting for Jesus's return when we die. The thief on the cross next to Jesus for example. When he spoke out for Jesus to the other criminal, and asked for Jesus. Jesus replied that today he would see paridise. Based on that at least a few people do not wait, or sleep in death until Jesus's return, but instead have a place for them after death.

This verse along a few others makes me think that we have a place for us after we die. Each of us to a destination that God provides. However, I also believe in the reserection. When Jesus comes back, we will all be reserected to be judged and either to be in the Kingdom, or to go to hell.

Yes, that day the thief confessed Jesus as Lord and Savior and when Jesus returns this guy will also be raised from his grave to meet the Lord in the air.

1 Thessalonians 4:13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. 15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. 16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

Me personally, I don't care when the Lord is coming back for me. I just really, really want Him to.

Matthew 24:36 But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. 37 But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

All we need to do for ourselves is to be ready for when He does return.

If after we physically die here on earth we have to wait until the judgment, where will we be during that waiting time?

asleep in the grave

1Thessalonians 4:14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. 15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.

Enoch, Moses, Abraham and Elijah were not taken up to the third Heaven as some teach as when they were seen (not Enoch or Abraham) of Peter, James and John in Matthew 17:1-9 it was only a transfiguration like a vision that they saw Jesus transfigured as was Moses and Elijah. There is no one in the third heaven except God, Jesus and the angels, John 3:13. Everyone that has ever died is asleep in their grave and when Christ returns they will hear His voice as He calls all of them to come forth, they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation, John 5:28, 29. It is only our spirit/breath/soul that goes back to God who gave it, Genesis 2:7; Ecc 12:7.

Genesis 5:24 - Enoch
Genesis 49:30 - Abraham
Deuteronomy 34:5, 6 - Moses
2 Kings 2:11 - Elijah

Elijah, having ascended into the air by a whirlwind was carried away out of sight beyond the horizon. Several years after he was taken away King Jehoram received a letter from him. How long after? There are some difficulties in figuring the exact chronology as it varies from 2 to 10 years or more. A note in Josephus (a Jewish historian of the first century A.D.) says 4 years, while the JEWISH ENCYCLOPEDIA figures it at 7 years.

Regardless of the exact number of years there came writing to Jehoram from Elijah the prophet, saying..." (2Chron 21:12). Now the wickedness of Jehoram, for which he was being rebuked in the letter, took place after Elijah was taken away, yet the letter speaks of these things as past events, and the punishment to come upon him as yet future. So the idea of some, that Elijah wrote the letter before he was removed by the whirlwind, is proved wrong.

Elijah was taken up by the whirlwind into the first heaven and transported to another location on Earth. God did not see fit in His purpose to reveal his whereabouts. What some people do not know is that there are three heavens. The first heaven is the Atmosphere, the air surrounding the earth. Birds fly "in the heaven" - certainly not to God's throne. We read in Genesis l:2 of "foul that may fly above the Earth in the open firmament of heaven." Jacob, when blessing Isaac, said: "God give you of the dew of heaven," and Moses was joyful that the "heavens shall drop down dew" (Gen.27:28; Deut.33:28). The dew comes from the first heaven - the atmosphere. The second heaven is the expanse of this awesome universe - where the stars, moon and planets are. The Psalmists often wrote about the "Heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon, and the stars, which you have ordained" (Ps.8:3; Gen.1:15-17). The third heaven is where the throne of God exists, where the heavenly temple is found and the heavenly Jerusalem
