I'm really curious about this verse that I read in my Message Bible tonight. Although this reads a bit differently it's basically the same thing.

Exodus 13:13 "And every firstling of an ass you shall redeem with a lamb: and if you will not redeem it, then you shall break his neck: and all the firstborn of man among your children shall you redeem.

Wow, talk about an unlucky break. My question is just what exactly is this verse talking about? Poor donkey.

You do know you are reading a Hebrew history book, not a Christian rule book? The Jews have always had strange habits that represent one thing or another.

As Willie points ut it is a book on jewish history but, and most people despise getting lessons from past but there are valuable lessons that we should make note of in all of history and you have landed on one, here.

Chapter 13

1 And Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying, 2 `Sanctify to Me every first-born, opening any womb among the sons of Israel, among man and among beast; itis Mine.' 3 And Moses saith unto the people, `Remember this dayin which ye have gone out from Egypt, from the house of servants, for by strength of hand hath Jehovah brought you out from this, and any thing fermented is not eaten; 4 To-day ye are going out, in the month of Abib. 5 `And it hath been, when Jehovah bringeth thee in unto the land of the Canaanite, and of the Hittite, and of the Amorite, and of the Hivite, and of the Jebusite, which He hath sworn to thy fathers to give to thee, a land flowing with milk and honey, that thou hast done this service in this month. 6 `Seven days thou dost eat unleavened things, and in the seventh day is a feast to Jehovah; 7 unleavened things are eaten the seven days, and any thing fermented is not seen with thee; yea, leaven is not seen with thee in all thy border. 8 `And thou hast declared to thy son in that day, saying, ` It isbecause of what Jehovah did to me, in my going out from Egypt, 9 and it hath been to thee for a sign on thy hand, and for a memorial between thine eyes, so that the law of Jehovah is in thy mouth, for by a strong hand hath Jehovah brought thee out from Egypt; 10 and thou hast kept this statute at its appointed season from days to days.
11 `And it hath been, when Jehovah bringeth thee in unto the land of the Canaanite, as He hath sworn to thee and to thy fathers, and hath given it to thee, 12 that thou hast caused every one opening a womb to pass over to Jehovah, and every firstling--the increase of beasts which thou hast: the males are Jehovah's. 13 `And every firstling of an ass thou dost ransom with a lamb, and if thou dost not ransom it , then thou hast beheaded it: and every first-born of man among thy sons thou dost ransom. 14 `And it hath been, when thy son asketh thee hereafter, saying, What isthis? that thou hast said unto him, By strength of hand hath Jehovah brought us out from Egypt, from a house of servants; 15 yea, it cometh to pass, when Pharaoh hath been pained to send us away, that Jehovah doth slay every first-born in the land of Egypt, from the first-born of man even unto the first-born of beast; therefore I am sacrificing to Jehovah all opening a womb whoare males, and every first-born of my sons I ransom;

The most abused item in this world is scripture and ripping a verse out of it's context is, likely, the most common form of trashing any scripture is to rape it by jerking it out of it's context and this usually perfored to Proof Text some point that is not Godly and is not taught but is often taught against in the Word of YHWH. You have not done that but the practice has been made so popular tat is has infected the Church that it has become a standard heard from the Pulpit by men assuring the people it is of God.

I have even heard some of the passages in Revelation describing Satan being attributed to Jesus. He was a pastor examined by the Pulpit committee I was a member of and voted for the man. But just as soon qs I called him and put the passages back into context he conspired and soon booted me and my family out of his church!

Scripture is the only thing on this planet that does not Indwell any man that can explain scripture, being the largest reason for looking at any Scripture in it's Local Context to examine how it fits into the larger context of the entire Bible.

This scripture is a verse in Jesus'/God's description of Consecrating Yisrael's first born... children, Beef, sheep, everything that has blood in it's body.

Remember, YHWH was bringing a people out of Barbaric life style to teach them to Worship Him, in truth and in Spirit. They were a sandy lot tat was as rough as a three year dry Corn Cob. included in this lesson was a good example of His forgiveness to a Barbarous People, YHWH knew these people needed their Jackasses (Much larger ad stronger than a Donkey) and their Oxen for the most dificult tasks of life but He also wanted them to learn submission, the submission required to worship with all of their Being and their Spirit.

Thus they needed to sacrifice something that meant their lives or livelihood to them but then He gave to them Deliverance, the Sheep instead and after it was sacrificed, it became Supper. All they actually had to loose was the price of the purchase of a Lamb or the use of tye wool it would have yielded i the future. And if you were of such a mind as to disobey the desires of YHWH then you should permanently loose the use of the treasured animal or suffer being found in the Judging hand of YHWH and suffer His Eternal Wrath.

What everyone that refuses the truth, that the books misnamed as the Old Testament is the Bible that Jesus taught every lesson, found in the misnamed group of books we call the New Testament, from. We must remember the last 27 books are YHWH breathed Life Application Commentaries and are not, in themselves a free standing Bible, in and of themselves but are linked to one another, forver.

I pray this helps your quest.

So let me get this straight? It was considered a Jewish custom by breaking the neck of a donkey? I'm sorry but that seems rather strange to me. I guess that's just the animal lover in me talking though.

Okay so now let me see if I can understand this right. Since Jesus Christ is considered to be the lamb of God, was that symbolic or something? How we were destined to die but Jesus took our place and was sacrificed instead? It was in the OT so maybe it was foreshadowing and prophesizing this event.

This is what I warned of a week or two ago. Guard against letting yourself become a "One Verse Christian." As Taylor says, anything and everything has to be viewed in light of the message of the ENTIRE Bible.

Go back to vs. 1 and read the full context to vs16. The Lord is asking Moses to sanctify (set apart, make holy) all the first born of man and animals, among the children of Israel, both of man and of beast: it is mine. Other words all that belong to God. This was a dedication to God as the Israelites were set free from captivity in Egypt and passed over from the bondage in Egypt to that of the promised land God brought them to full of milk and honey.

The first of all the male children were redeemed meaning they were the first in the families to be set apart and made holy unto God in the promised land. Certain animals were used as a sacrifice unto God and according to the law an ass was considered unclean and could not be used as a sacrifice to bring honor to God. Lambs were always an acceptable sacrifice, but if one did not have a lamb to redeem then they were told to break the neck of the firstling ass as they were a very useful and needed animal and the sacrifice would be that of losing something of value to you.

Okay. I understand your point, but do you see what I'm saying? Maybe the verses have a double meaning. I mean we were once considered to be unclean as well until Jesus (who was all clean, perfect, and holy) washed all of our sins away. So what if the donkey represents us and what if the lamb represents the lamb of God being Jesus Christ as a willing sacrifice for our sins? That's the way I look at it at least.

What you are missing is the point of the law in the Torah (first five books of the Bible). It's about the order of Gods law given to the Jews specifically. There now is no need of sacrificing any animals since Jesus was made the final blood sacrifice for all, the Jew first as Jesus fulfilled the Temple laws and for us who are Gentile grafted into the branch with Jesus being the root. There is no double meaning as this verse only pertains to the Temple laws. The donkeys neck was to be broken literally as it was a sacrifice of man's obedience to God to have to do such a thing.

Yes, that's exactly what I was trying to say. It's just that I was using different words.

Okay so now let me see if I can understand this right. Since Jesus Christ is considered to be the lamb of God, was that symbolic or something? How we were destined to die but Jesus took our place and was sacrificed instead? It was in the OT so maybe it was foreshadowing and prophesying this event.
We were destined to die what we mistakenly call the Natural Death the moment Eve conned Adam into sinning or joining her in her sin. The fact that YHWH gave Adam the earth to reign over was sold to the Tempter, Satan, and every human there died the Spiritual Death right then and we needed a Redeemer from that moment forward and Satan became the god of this Earth. that is why Yashua, Jesus in Koine Greek, came to the Earth. In the Bible, O.T, YHWH gave us the example of the Lamb without blemish or spot as a foreshadow of our Saviour.

As long as we sacrificed Sheep, Bulls and Goats YHWH forgave us for the past year because the only Sin Offering forever was and is Yashua. In Matthew 27 beginning with verse fifty or thereabouts we find the Old Testament being released from Paradise, a.k.a. Abraham's Buxom and running through the streets of the Holy City. (See also Luke chapter 16,)

And finally, yes, the sacrifices were the Foreshadowing of our LORD 's Sacrifice to purchase our Salvation, you are right.

I'm really curious about this verse that I read in my Message Bible tonight. Although this reads a bit differently it's basically the same thing.

To redeem is to offer a sacrifice.
The Old Covenant required animal sacrifices.
