You are a Chrisitan; you currently have a big problem. All your friends are all around you, some are Christians while the others "are not born again". Categorically, there are two peoples present, advising you and supporting you: the Christian friends and the unbelieving firnds. Both parties have given good advice and words of encouragement.

However, what is the differece between the advice and words of encouragement, assistance etc... from these two sets...particularly from a Christian POV?

Whenever I think about this issue I remember Job.
 
I guess it depends what it's about. Non Christians can give good advice and care about you. I'd listen to a non Christian relationship expert before I'd take the advice of a Christian divorced 5 times about relationships. Just don't adopt the beliefs behind the advice.
 
Whatever advice either one gives go to scripture to see if the advice lines up with the word of God as both can give good advice, but might not be what God would do.
 
The difference would be that the Christian should be basing their advice on Bible whenever this is possible. The non-Christian cannot be expected to do this.
 
I always enjoyed listening to Dr. Laura Slessinger (sp) becuse her replies to the unbelieving world were usually based on God's Word. True, she was formally Catholic and is now Orthodox Jew, and her replies were pretty pithy, but it was most often good advice.
Any advice based on God's Word is worth listening to. Even Christians can come up with strange ideas that are not based on Scripture.

One bit of advice is based on the best judgement of the person giving it and the other is likely to be biased by received 'wisdom' which in turn is based on the thoughts of ancient people who lived in a very different world.

Would you prefer to take advice from a good doctor or a Christian doctor? ;)

If the good doctor instructs me to give you a punch in the head and the Chrsitain doctor instructs me never to do that...I think I'll listen to the chrsitain doctor. Why? 'cause prevention is better than ccccccuuuuurrrrreeee;) :toofunny

There isn't much difference. God can use anyone to give you good advice. You don't use only Christian automechanics and only Christian grocery store clerks. Why would you assume that only Christian advice would be useful? There are some areas where it will tend to be better (concerning Christianity, though look at the huuuuge differences in beliefs that people who call themselves Christians can have), but most of the practical areas, and even sometimes with how to love other people, some non-Christians will simply give you better advice than some Christians will. Case-in-point = Alfie Kohn. He seems to be a bit dissatisfied with Christianity, and yet he knows how to love others better than many Christians I have talked to. God has given Alfie wisdom, and Alfie simply hasn't connected that wisdom with God yet. (Alfie even wrote a book on unconditional (love) parenting.)
 

From Christiansyou get disappointed because they are Christians and you are expecting more. Fromthe non-Christians you don’t. Thedifference is that if you talk with Christian friend he can give you better advicebased on God’s word.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:tongue></o:tongue>
