It's not as much of it being "popular," as much as people see it as a statement.
Something to be a little different than everybody else. An attention getter, conversation starter, that type of thing.

I feel the need to comment on here.
I have my ears gauged to a size zero, but I wear gauges that people confuse with earings all the time. They're not big, or obnoxious, if you saw me, you wouldn't even know if I didn't say anything.
God is not going to judge me by how large my ear lobes are...
