Hokey Smokes, Folks, the college football season is back! If you're a fan of the military academies, this is the thread for you.

Ranked #3 in the Mountain West Division, Air Force opens this Saturday, September 3, with their first-ever game against South Dakota. The two teams are about evenly rated, but Air Force has won their last four home openers, so I'm hoping for a big one.

For a long time, Army has been the weakest military team, but last year they finished their first winning season since 1997 and won their first bowl game since 1985. They're getting some respect as they go against Northern Illinois this Saturday. The Huskies won their bowl game last year, but they suffer from a lack of star players.

The last time they played, Navy beat Delaware by 17 points, and they're hoping to keep up the good work when they open this Saturday.

I wish I Could be there live :biggrin. I like it when both sides get so tough and close to :fight . I hope your side wins, otherwise you are :angry

It's the first week of college football, and...

Air Force shot down South Dakota 37-20. Leading by thirty points at halftime, Air Force bungled the fourth quarter and fumbled three times during the game. Don't look for any ranking this week, Folks. And next week, the Falcons go up against #14 Horned Frogs, so they better get it together.

However, TCU lost today by two points to unranked Baylor, so we should have two angry unranked teams slugging it out next week.

And a victorious US Navy sank Delaware 40-17. A 54 yard field goal set a Navy record against the team that was favored to win. After this blow-out, we might see Navy getting some ranking votes tomorrow.

The Army game against Northern Illinois has 3 1/2 minutes to go , and (sigh) the Black Knights are losing 49-20.

The Sports News reports that we have two stars this week:

Navy QB Kriss Proctor: The graduation of star QB Ricky Dobbs apparently won't slow down Navy's potent rushing attack. Proctor began Navy's post-Dobbs era by rushing for 176 yards and three touchdowns in a 40-17 victory over Delaware, last season's FCS runner-up.

Air Force WR Mikel Hunter: It's not often that a wide receiver grabs the spotlight in Air Force's run-oriented offense, but Hunter had two huge plays in the Falcons' 37-20 win over South Dakota. Hunter scored on an 80-yard reverse in the game's first play from scrimmage and added a 55-yard touchdown catch later in the game.

When Nevada joins the Mountain West next year, Air Force will have all they can handle.

You're right, Elijah. Mountain West is heating up after Brigham Young withdrew. Boise State, the team that came out of nowhere has joined up. And TCU, smoldering over last Saturday's loss to unranked Baylor, is also in Mountain West.

Incidentally, one sports writer said that the Air Force-TCU game will be the third best game this Saturday.

The rankings are out, and there are some hard feelings to go around.

Despite their victory over unranked South Dakota, Air Force dropped from 35 to 39 in the rankings. That's okay; Air Force fell asleep in the fourth quarter and deserved it. But TCU, the former #14 who lost by two points to unranked Baylor, is still ranked #25, the lowest possible ranking. (Officially, a team is only "ranked" if it makes the top 25). The pressure will be on TCU to blow out Air Force this Saturday.

Navy, which played a great game against unranked Delaware last Saturday, received no ranking votes, yet some teams that played a sorry game last week did.

Of course, Army received no ranking votes, nor did they deserve any. But they scored three touchdowns in a row in the fourth quarter last Saturday, so MAYBE they've got their act together.

This Saturday, September 10, 2011, Navy will play the West Kentucky Hilltoppers (honest, that's really their name). With no ranking votes for either team, Navy will need a blow-out to get anywhere in the polls. The Hilltoppers are proud to report that they only lost 14-3 last week to unranked Kentucky, and holding a much larger school to only two touchdowns actually is something to be proud about.

Last year, I stopped using a poll that was blatantly inaccurate, but I've found another one. The Yahoo Users' Poll has no bearing on anything at all, but they seem to be fairly accurate. Going down to 79th place, they rank Navy #38. Western Kentucky received no votes.

Army football, anyone?

This coming Saturday, Army has the opportunity to be the "Most Improved Team." They'll be playing the San Diego State Aztecs.

The Aztecs won their opener last Saturday, and they beat Navy in the Poinsettia Bowl last year. They have no ranking votes, but are #52 in the Yahoo Users' Poll.

The good news is that Army has no place to go but "up." The bad news is that they are definitely the underdogs.

One guy has his own sports site, and he's getting into the big time. Two weeks ago, he predicted that Arizona State, Air Force, and Penn State were the three teams that would surprise all the pollsters, and last week he was right.

He predicts that Air Force will blow out TCU tomorrow.

Coast Guard opens its season tomorrow against Merchant Marine Academy, as they usually do. And Merchant Marine usually wins. Hopefully, this year will be different.

Saturday, September 10, 2011. Part 1 of 4

Army lost 23-20 to San Diego State. The Black Knights slaughtered the Aztecs in rushing, but they fumbled eight times, losing three of them, and that sealed their defeat. San Diego won their third straight game without a fumble.

The good news is that Army is much improved over last week. The bad news is that they're 0-2, and don't expect any ranking votes for either team.

Part 2

We got some good news as Coast Guard Academy beat Merchant Marine Academy 10-8. Both teams played good defense and bad offense, with fumbles and bad snaps galore.

Coast Guard was ranked #7 out of 8 teams in its division in the preseason polls, and this should really give them a boost. They finished last year 2-7.

Part 3

Oh, the pain, as TCU pounds Air Force 35-19. Looking at the stats, the two teams did about equally well with one exception: TCU completed 20 passes, while Air Force only completed 12.

Part 4

For the second week in a row, Navy threw their anchors away and pounded their opponent. The Midshipmen beat the Hilltoppers 40-14, playing a consistently good game from beginning to end. And Navy's coach set a record, getting his 29th win faster than any previous Navy coach.

The good news? West Kentucky played well, with one of their men reaching 3,000 yards in his college career.

The bad news? This is Western Kentucky's 16th straight home loss, so Navy didn't beat a powerful school.

For this week, I don't see any military team being ranked, and I doubt that Air Force will get any ranking votes. Navy MIGHT get a few votes, though.

It's September 11, and I want to express my gratitude to the many military members and veterans who have kept us free.

The rankings won't be out until Tuesday, but look for #12 South Carolina Gamecocks to drop--they beat an unranked team by only three points yesterday. And I predict that smooth sailing for the Navy will end this coming Saturday when they play the Gamecocks.

Granted, the unranked Georgia Bulldogs played a great game, barely losing on a fumble. But high-ranking teams aren't supposed to have close calls with unranked teams.

It's Monday, September 12, and the ranking are out. No military team received any ranking votes.

However, the Yahoo Users' Poll, which doesn't count for anything, has Navy moving up three places to #33. They'll need it: the real poll has South Carolina moving up one place to #11, and the two teams go against each other this Saturday. Air Force dropped ten places to #45, and Army didn't even get listed.

Guess who America's second-highest team for rushing offense is this year? Army! And the military's most improved team will get another chance this Saturday when they go up against #31 Northwestern Wildcats. It will be Army's first game against a Big Ten opponent in 24 years, so the Black Knights have some potential to move up heavily in the polls.

You wouldn't expect 2-0 Northwestern to be worried about 0-2 Army, but their coaches have told the media that they are concerned.

Air Force lost two senior defense starters due to injuries in last week's game, so they're glad to be off this week. Their coach says that reviewing the films showed that the Falcons made mistakes that can be corrected, and they hope to recover.

Folks, I have to apologize for an article that I am unable to delete. I am careful to check my facts before posting them, but there is a problem with the Coast Guard Academy website. One article states that they have played one game this year, while another states that they have played two. One article (which I had cited) says that they beat Merchant Marine Academy, while another says that they lost. All of these articles are dated 2011.

Until Coast Guard can straighten out its website, I am not willing to use it as a source.

It's September 18, 2011, and Army has just beaten Northwestern 21-14!

Army entered the fourth quarter with a seven point lead over the undefeated Wildcats, when West Point blew a 25 yard field goal. The Wildcats took possession and scored on the first play. With the score now tied, West Point decided to be all they could be, scoring on a nine play drive. With three minutes to go, Northwestern's offense did a great job but couldn't top the Black Knights' awesome defense, suffering one sack and a loss on a running play.

The "most improved" military academy is now 2-1. Don't expect any ranking votes, but Army ought to appear in the Yahoo Users' Poll this week.
