Yeah seen that last night I would have to say Loney will now make the team unless he stinks. BTA if Joey hits this spring he may still not make it...

Don't forget to watch the MLB Channel tonight an hour long show on the Rangers...

Thanks for the heads up.

Think Josh is done. However JD will give him one more shot. I think we get 6 weeks when he is ready and then he's back on DL.

You know he's going to give him a chance cause you know what Josh can do when he's healthy, that's not too many guys that are more dangerous at the plate than he is when he's on (and healthy)...

They'll take it easy with him so don't expect to see him back with the big club before early June or even later, if he's healthy...

Some good updates for a change.

Excerpts:

THE PRICE OF STRIKEOUTS: Starter Yu Darvish threw 63 pitches in 3 1/3 innings overall. Strikeouts inflated the total. Darvish had six strikeouts, which required 33 pitches. He threw 30 pitches to the other 10 hitters faced.

STAYING IN CONTENTION: Non-roster right-hander Dillon Gee, of UT-Arlington, remained in contention for a rotation spot by working three scoreless innings. Gee again moved the ball around the strike zone and kept hitters off-balance. Including an appearance against Team Venezuela, Gee has seven scoreless innings with four hits allowed in his last three appearances.

Gamboa has been getting a lot of work in ST (and has been doing pretty well) Hauschild and Gee haven't, so is this a sign they are really intrigued by him and his knuckler???

Any ideas yet on the Opening Day 25???

The pen is kinda hard to call because of all the RHers and few LHers, may make a trade for a LHer...

I'm hoping Dyson's arm does not fall off given how much Leland used him in WBC. Claudio got a work out too in the PR pen. Two our top relievers and Claudio being, what, our only leftie?

Looks like things seem to be working themselves out without much of a decision being made by the coaching staff. Scheppers looks to have hurt himself again but he wasn't pitching well to start with. AJ looks as if he has his command and confidence back so I would say he's a lock as #4. To me as of this moment Gamboa is #5 but if Martinez does extremely well tomorrow it could go to him. Hauschild pitched in relief again today and looked really good so I would say he should make the roster too. So as of this moment I would have to say this will be the Opening Day roster unless someone is traded or injured...

Beltre, Andrus, Odor, Napoli, Choo, Mazara, Gomez, DeShields, Rua, Profar, Lucroy and Chirinos.

Hamels, Perez, Griffen, Darvish, Gamboa, Hauschild, Kela, Jeffress, Dyson, Bush, Claudio, Barnette and Alvarez (Or Martinez instead of Gamboa)...

And something to make you laugh...

Here’s my crack at the Opening Day roster. No gambling, please.

Starting pitchers (4): Yu Darvish, Cole Hamels, Martin Perez, A.J. Griffin

Relief pitchers (8): Sam Dyson, Matt Bush, Keone Kela, Tony Barnette, Jeremy Jeffress, Alex Claudio, Dario Alvarez, Mike Hauschild

Catchers (2): Jonathan Lucroy, Robinson Chirinos

Infielders (6): Elvis Andrus, Adrian Beltre, Mike Napoli, Rougned Odor, Jurickson Profar, Drew Robinson

Outfielders (5): Shin-Soo Choo, Carlos Gomez, Nomar Mazara, Delino DeShields, Ryan Rua

I’m torn about Robinson making the team. The Rangers are worried about him rotting away on the bench as a rookie who needs everyday at-bats, but he’s more versatile than James Loney. Loney, like Robinson, bats left-handed and, unlike Robinson, knows how to come off the bench.

But Loney would also need a spot on the 40-man roster, and the Rangers don’t have one and don’t want to create one.

Loney and Robinson are also healthy. Hanser Alberto is still out with shoulder soreness. If he gets healthy, I like him to make the roster. Right now, that’s iffy.

So is predicting the Opening Day roster.

Here is one from Evan Grant but as you can see things have changed since he made his up, Scheppers has gotten hurt...

Here's how such a roster might be constructed:

Starting pitchers (5)
-- RHP Yu Darvish, LHP Cole Hamels, LHP Martin Perez, RHP A.J. Griffin, RHP Mike Hauschild

Changes: Griffin replaces Dillon Gee

The skinny:
Jeff Banister said Monday night that the discussion over starting in a four-man rotation vs. a five-man rotation will likely be the single-biggest discussion the Rangers have over the final week in Arizona. It's tempting to get an extra start or two from Yu Darvish and or Cole Hamels in April as the top of the team's rotation should be its biggest strength. But the Rangers need those guys at full strength for September. Save those bullets for later. Use an extra reliever and maybe piggyback Griffin or Hauschild with Dillon Gee behind one of them and perhaps Alex Claudio behind the other. Save those extra starts for later. Both Eddie Gamboa and Nick Martinez had nice starts in the last turn, but Hauschild will get the tie breaker due to his Rule 5 status and the fact that Gamboa and Martinez are optionable.

Relief pitchers (8)
-- RHP Sam Dyson, RHP Matt Bush, RHP Tony Barnette, LHP Alex Claudio, RHP Keone Kela, RHP Jeremy Jeffress, RHP Tanner Scheppers, RHP Dillon Gee

Changes: Add Gee as eighth reliever

The skinny: The first six spots are set and they have all been exceptional this spring. It's been impressive work. Scheppers is a different story. He's still not regained the 96 mph fastball he had before his 2014 turn as a starter. He's struggled with his command. If the Rangers choose to go with a piggyback situation at the back of the rotation, you could see them pair Gamboa or Martinez up with the fifth spot and send Scheppers back to Triple-A to continue to work. And don't rule out the possibility of dealing Scheppers.

Catchers (2)
-- Jonathan Lucroy, Robinson Chirinos

Changes: None

The skinny: The WBC will be over this week and both Lucroy and Chirinos will spend the final week of spring training working closely with the starters to get back in synch. There was never any competition for jobs here. It's a very strong combination.

Infielders - 5

-- 1B Mike Napoli, 2B Rougned Odor, SS Elvis Andrus, 3B Adrian Beltre, INF-OF Jurickson Profar

Changes: Remove INF Drew Robinson

The skinny: Drew Robinson's results have tailed off in the last week and it's probably eliminated any remaining chance he had of making the team. But that doesn't mean he's taken a step back. This camp has been an impressive one for him. He's made it clear that he does figure in the future and that he can be a contributor. There is still more development that can be accomplished at Triple-A and he can play every day. The Rangers have so much versatility on a three-man bench that they just can't find a way to make extra at-bats for a young still-developing player.

Outfielders (5)
-- LF Ryan Rua, CF Carlos Gomez, RF Nomar Mazara, OF-DH Shin-Soo Choo, OF Delino DeShields

Changes: None

The skinny: Jurickson Profar's versatility is part of what makes a three-man bench viable. He figures prominently in both the infield and outfield situations. In the outfield, it's looking increasingly like the Rangers are going to try a three-man platoon with Profar, Ryan Rua and Delino DeShields in left. To make it work, Jeff Banister is going to have to maximize at-bats for these guys around the diamond. Profar should get all the starts vs. right-handers; Rua will get the majority of the starts vs. left-handers, but many of those may come in right field for Mazara. That would open a spot for DeShields to play vs. lefties. In addition, DeShields could be used as a late-game defensive replacement or a speed option off the bench.

Looks good to me. I guess SP slot #5 can wait given the early days off.
