That's my older, wiser Pentecostal friend. She's been a spiritual mentor. I may not go to church, but I have the privilege of talking to her everyday, and she's helped me through things and moved me along the process of being conformed unto the image of Christ Jesus.
Her husband passed away with cancer about 6 months ago. Terrible. 2nd marriage for both of them; the first spouses for both were not such great people. His case might have resolved, had it not been for medical incompetence. Sadly, that seems to be fairly common amongst people with cancer and other serious problems.
Now Verna has been diagnosed with kidney disease. Her kidneys are at 47% functioning level. I don't know what that means, honestly. She's seeing a specialist soon. This may have been caused or exacerbated by some new fangled IV infusion to treat/prevent osteoporosis (I think most of the other treatments are given orally; this is a once yearly infusion, and its apparently a real money maker for some docs). The clinic sprang this infusion on her without providing a warning about possible Renal Failure, which I find unacceptable. Her family doc referred her to a nephrologist. He's furious with the clinic for doing the infusion.
Also, she has sewer issues. Looks like she's going to be out a good bit of money to fix that. And family issues...1 grand daughter may be into hard drugs, and another has had a stroke at the tender age of 24, possibly because of some sort of hormone pill to correct another problem. That grand daughter is making slow but steady progress towards recovery. She has insurance, but she's most likely going to lose her job, which I think means she and her husband will be paying for COBRA or something after a while.
Ugh. Life is hard. No matter what life throws at Verna, she's always been there for me. She's taught me empathy, compassion, how to be a friend. She's prayed with and for me over the phone. She's a wonderful person, and she's basically my second (spiritual) mother.
Please pray.
