What would you say to a letter like this?

I'm not a Christian, but I have a friends who are, and the other day they were telling me me , the Bible says hat grace means that I don't have to do anything to get saved. and don't have to do anything after I'm saved either. Is that for real?. It left me dumbfounded and blown away! That sounds like my kind of religion! Could this be true?

Help me answer this lost soul's question.

What you should tell em to do is take the Bible and hit his friend over the head with it. Maybe that'd knock some TRUTH into him. :)

Well, I, for one, am interested in what you would tell your friend IS required. Because, I believe, in essence, they are correct. (notice that you used the words HAVE TO DO.)

Tell him that his friends are incorrect.

That should get the ball rolling.

I would tell my friend that what is required is that they have faith in the promise of God's forgiveness given through his Son Jesus.

Because, I believe, in essence, they are correct. (notice that you used the words HAVE TO DO.)
Faith leaves footprints that distinctly identify the faith that which left the footprints. Ultimately, I'd say it's impossible to have faith and not leave the footprints of faith. It's like saying you can go swimming and not leave wet footprints where you climbed out of the pool. So in that sense you do HAVE to leave something behind when you have faith in Christ as evidence of that faith.

What if Abraham had not attempted to sacrifice Isaac? Did his faith require him to do that, or not? I say, 'yes', it absolutely did require him to do that because by virtue of what it meant for him to have faith in the promises of God. If he did not then we would have no choice but to conclude that he did not really believe in God's power to keep the promises.

And, not a word of all that touches upon the view understood by the letter writer... that we really do have NO required actions laid upon us as conditions of being accepted by God.

Do you love your family, and do things for them. Of course you do. We all do. But, are you REQUIERD to perform acts for your parents in order to be in their family? The fact that you do, out of love, has nothing to do with being REQUIRED to perform.

Faith without works is dead. Let me show you my faith by the works I do, said James, the brother of Christ.

If a brother says to you, I am cold and need clothing and you tell them - good, go and eat and stay warm but do nothing to help him, by neither giving him food or clothing, then your faith is dead. Dead works, is no faith at all, said James, brother of Christ.

This is true religion, taking care of the orphans and the widows, said James, brother of Christ.

God has prepared work for us to do, let's obey and do it! We get to participate with Him in building His Kingdom - otherwise He will find someone else. Love is a two way street, we will know those who love the Lord because those are them that obey and follow His commands, said Jesus.

I'm pretty sure you will find that He said, "all men will know them by their love for one another."

It's also worth telling your letter-writer that repentance is everywhere mentioned as necessary for salvation. Repent - in other words, turn around and take a new direction. Good works alone will not save us, but a loving relationship with God invariably prompts true Christians to good works as He works on making us into his image.
