There seems to be a lot of discussion of late as to what happens to us when we die.

But what exactly is a Soul/nepesh?
Nepesh is the Hebrew word for Soul.

This seems to be a different thing from our heart AND our spirit AND our mind AND our body.

What is it exactly?
Scriptural support would be great.

God breathed life (spirit) into us, Genesis 2:7, that made us a living soul and what goes back to God when this physical body dies (returns to the dust of the ground) is that very spirit of life God gave us, Ecclesiastics 12:7.

The soul and the spirit are connected, but separable (Hebrews 4:12). The soul is the essence of humanity’s being; it is who we are. The spirit is the aspect of humanity that connects with God. Only those who have faith in Christ are those who are spiritually alive while those with unbelief in Christ are spiritually dead, 1Corinthians 2:11; Hebrews 4:12; James 2:26; Ephesians 2:1-5; Colossians 2:13.

Soul, "Rauch", "Napesh", is the breath of God. Genesis 2:7 And Jehovah God formeth the man -- dust from the ground, and breatheth into his nostrils breath of life, and the man becometh a living creature.

Bereshis 2:7
And Hashem Elohim formed the adam of the aphar min haadamah, and breathed into his nostrils the nishmat chayyim; and the adam became a nefesh chayyah.

Psalm 33:6
By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host.

Job 33:4
The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.

The Holy Spirit is the breath of God. ~Ruach Elohim
