Monday Morning's Wildlife Rescue: Monday morning about 4:35-4:40am as I was about to leave work I noticed an employee standing in the middle of the parking lot struggling with an animal on the ground.

He was (unsuccessfully) trying to remove an old peanut butter container? which was stuck on a Raccoon's head. Each time he tried grabbing it the Raccoon would see his hand, flinch and move away slightly.

After about a dozen times I decided to intervene since I was wearing a leather jacket and thick Swedish Military Surplus leather gauntlet gloves offering protection against scratches and or bites. The employee was trying to use his bare hands.

I tried grabbing the container stuck on the Raccoon's head and with me too each time the Raccoon would see my hand coming, flinch and move slightly away.

After about 6 times I was able to get a good grip on the container, I pulled, the Raccoon pulled, and off popped his collar of death. With it on it most certainly would have died due to no water, food, or even air.

The Raccoon immediately ambled away without further ado and the employee thanked me.

A few video cameras there should have recorded it.

I have seen videos like this on YouTube of buckets stuck on Deer's heads, Goats, etc. This was the first time I have ever had to deal with it lol.

I'm a huge animal lover (as you can maybe already tell by my avatar) so I'm really glad that the raccoon was alright. Bless your heart for saving him. :) Raccoons may be cute, but they are also quite dangerous so I say that that was rather brave of you.

The employee who was trying to remove the container from the raccoon's head was attempting to do so without getting scratched or bit knowing raccoons can carry diseases of various kinds. Being he was using his bare hands he was braver than I, lol. At least knowing my leather gloves would offer protections at least from his front claws I felt pretty comfortable intervening.

Are you sure he knew that? It just doesn't seem like a very wise thing in my book whether or not somebody actually feels brave enough to attempt it.

Oh he was trying to be real careful with trying to get a grip on that container. I could tell by his actions he was trying to be very cautious.

Well that's good. Unfortunately for him though he was unprepared and acting a little too cautious. As I said before, it was a really good thing that you knew what to do. Well done! :thumbsup

Here's another true animal rescue story. One night about 23 years ago as I was conducting my regular patrols around and on top of a Hydroelectric Dam, suddenly I heard all this screaming and screeching noise 20' up in the trees ahead of me on one end of the dam. I shined my flashlight up in the trees and what do I see but 2 baby Opossums way out on the edge of a tree limb, and 2 baby Raccoons towards the trunk side of the tree attempting to get to the 2 baby Opossums. It was the baby Opossums I believe that were screaming? I yelled at the 2 baby Raccoons to, "Leave those Possums alone and to get down from there!". They did and the 2 baby Raccoons ambled down the trunk of the tree to the ground then running off. The 2 baby Possums then climbed back along the branch towards the trunk of the tree since the Raccoons were now gone.

Possums, usually stay with their mother.I hate mr.possum. Coons here have carried rabies. Those are not native to america .

Yeah, possums are nasty critters. You don't want to wind up tangling with one that's for sure. I didn't know that rabies weren't native to America though. That's rather interesting.

Raccoons aren't nor is the citrus family of lemons, grapefruit, and oranges etc.

Horses as well, certain types .the spanish horses are gone .I may read up on those as they were bred and uses by ranchers up to ww2 to drive cattle.

Rt 60,rt 30 once was part of that type of cattle driving .a cleared path from Tampa to quay with deviations to ft.pierce ,the actual old ft.pierce area thar once was a army fort
