I do like Jewish/Israel history and fiction as well as Israel/Palestine current issues. Any of you into this kind of literature? I know it is considered "heavy" but I find it fascinating.

e.g. The Source - James Michener
Unholy War - The Truth Behind the Headlines - Randall Prince
The Gifts of the Jews - Thomas Cahill
Elie Wiesel (one of the best!) - many of his books. (1) Night (2) Messengers of God (3) The Trial of God etc
Israel at Fifty - Moshe Raviv
The Transfer Agreement - Edwin Black

I would love to hear about your favourites!

I haven't read any of the books you've mentioned but I'll check them out. I have read "The Survivor: An Inspiring True Story" by Jack Eisner. Excellent book about his life in the Warsaw Ghetto.

I like to study Jewish history, it helps give insight on Bible prophecy. I just watched Schindler's List again last week as well as Anne Frank.

I'm amazed how people say that something like that will never happen again, yet the Bible tells us it will.

Some more good books

If you like those books you might also enjoy the Zion Chronicles by Brock and Bodie Thoene, they are fiction but extremely well researched fiction. These books are what first got me interested in the history of the modern state of Israel and branched into an intrest in Jewish history and culture. (This writing team also has a wonderful series on pre and early WWII that involves some of the same characters, the Zion Covenant)

Thanks Lindaleriel..... I will keep an eye open for Brock and Bodie Thoene. The books sound fascinating.

I have also "discovered" Sholem Asch. Have read his "The Nazarene". It ranks, for me, within the top 5 books I have ever read. I ordered "Salvation" and also found "Song of the Valley" in a second-hand bookstore. I am looking forward to reading both.

Oh the Thoenes are wonderful - although I like their Galway Chronicles about Ireland durring the Great Starvation (commonly refered to as the Potato Famine) best.

I am wanting to do a study on the Jews and want to get in touch with some books that deal with the history of the Jews and Israel.

Any suggestions?

The Idiots Guide to Jewish History and Culture is honestly one of the best basic overview texts Ive ever found on the subject (believe it or not). The Gift of the Jews by Thomas Cahil is fairly good but a much drier and more scholarly work, the Idiots Gude is a much easier and more entertaining read. If you can find a catalogue for Messianic Jewish Publishers (I think thats what its called - they may have a website but Im not sure) they have a lot of good information - I highly recomend their Messianic Passover materials (that and the Thoene's books are what got me interested in the first place).

Hi Jake

I would also recommend Martin Gilbert. He is a very respected historian who is able to really bring history alive!

See "Letters to Auntie Fori - the 5000 year history of the Jewish people and their faith" - Martin Gilbert

Also by him is a wonderful (but more expensive) "From the ends of the earth - The Jews in the 20th century".

A beautiful book I have the privilege of having is "A Historical Atlas of the Jewish People - from the time of the patriarchs to the present" - edited by Eli Barnavi.

Enjoy!
Kind regards
Gary
