Are bathing suits immodest? Would it be considered dressing immodestly to wear bathing suits at the beach?

It's weird how most of society views bathing suits. A woman would never think of wearing her undies to go walking around the park, but put on a bathing suit and it's fine in public. Weird!

I totally agree. I find it offensive, and it is like we have a double standard about it here at my Christian college. Girls are not allowed to have their underwear showing, but it's ok for them to wear a bikini to the pool :nono Go figure...

.

Jo Jo, You have a good point about the underwear vs. a bathing suite. However, in many parts of Europe, nudity in public beaches in commonplace.

From the perspective of the secular/liberal, so to speak, has taken the word "modest" out of the dictionary. In other words, there is no such thing as being modest anymore in the secular world. Free thinkers is what they want to be and that's exactly what they get.... they don't see the consequences of taking "liberty" to act out what God told them is destructive to their well being.

According to biblical "modesty" I would say that anything that provokes a man's eye to lust is immodest. But then, it also states that to lust after the flesh is sin... So it goes to show... women should not provoke and men should not allow temptation to take control of their mind-set. So allowing Lust to enter in is the root of the problem, provoking/temptation lust is the hand that offers the seed of it.

my :twocents... (so as to not offend anyone) :halo .

I would say it's immodest too. Here's a guy be very honest right here:

I'm still learning to see Bikini's as a bad thing. No one raised me to see them in a negative light. However I agree with the sentiments of JoJo and Caromurp, how is a bikini any different than walking around in their underwear? Bikini's and other skimpy swim attire are Immodest

Adam and Eve were naked in the garden of eden. There was nothing wrong with nudity until the eye of the person saw it to be wrong. It is the Lust of the flesh that is the interfering property of the mind. It's the provoking of a mind-set that is what is to be controlled, not whether a person is nude or partially dressed. Take a nude body just standing there...no provoking with the way they express themselves or talk.... Their is the difference. It's what is in the mind and the intent of the expression, not what is partially nude. Modesty is not anything but what the mind thinks about the flesh and the expression being relayed, provoked. If I stand nude it in itself is not a sin! The mind-set of the one who is looking at the body IS what determines IF "that person" is of a filthy mind-set about it as to whether it is a sin or not.

The spirit of a thing makes all the difference. Nudity, per say, is NOT wrong! The mind-set a person takes on about it is what determines what is is right or wrong in "the person's own mind". What other people "think" about a matter as to whether they think there is nothing wrong with nudity, then there is nothing wrong with it.

Culture does have an impact on what is considered modest or immodest, and it can change drastically from culture to culture. However, the Bible never changes. It tells us that we are not to look upon the nakedness of other people, and in my opinion that includes underwear. I have always viewed bikinis as being no different than bras and panties made out of different material. I think that it shouldn't matter what the culture dictates, we should always take our cues from God's Word. :)

I think it's strange that while women's swimsuits are getting smaller and smaller (How much smaller can they get?), men's swimsuits seem to be getting bigger and bigger. Those ridiculous board shorts that men wear to the beach that holds 10 pounds (or more) of water must be terribly uncomfortable and take forever to dry. I don't go to beaches and don't know. The last time I went to a beach, men were wearing brief-type swimwear.

To finally answer the question, women's swimsuits are made to appeal to men and their lust. Very little is left to the imagination, and it makes me wonder why they bother wearing anything--except that the law requires certain parts to be covered in public. Women's swimsuits arouse desires in normal men and teen boys with raging hormones.

The Bible also says not to do anything that may cause our brother to stumble. So, if standing naked in front of some people causes them to lust after you, bad idea. If anyone saw me naked, they would run away. :lol

lol They had to do something with all that extra fabric!

I think when we, as Christians at a broad level, start modeling Jesus and His nature and character, instead of trying to force morality on the world, then we will see more change and less rebellion.
So yes, most bathing suits for woman are immodest and ruin our testimony. First we have to remove the log from our own eyes before we can help others.

One of my many hobbies happens to be that of seamstress, quilter and sewer of anything you can imagine. I've been sewing for 49 years out of 561/2 years of my life and I happen to have a basement full of fabric stash and UFO's (un-finished objects/some being unidentifiable or half-finished projects. ) So to me, THAT comment is hillarious!!!! :thumb :biggrin

This whole subject reminds me of the woman caught in Adultery. They brought HER to Jesus but not the MAN. Have you seen the men and their "bathing suites"? I mean come on men - we need not see that either? Why is it woman are to be modest but man can do as they please and show off their 6 packs and bulging __________. That just ain't right either folks. Woman have been dressing like tramps for centuries. Why? Because men want them to. NOT ALL MEN! The most do! On a side note: The one in here who said his CHRISTIAN College allows their ladies ware bikinis? I sure hope you have stood up for truth and told them they are in Error! :shrug

:biggrin Relic, that's awesome. My mom has quite a collection of Un-Finished Objects too! So I know all about those boxes and boxes of fabric scraps and half-finished projects. lol She got this from her grandmother, who kept and recycled every bit of fabric. Some of her most beautiful quilts made during the Great Depression were made from recycled men's silk boxers!

Now back to the bathing suits. I'd much rather see a man in big shorts than in a Speedo. Some things just don't need to be advertised. :rolleyes2

I agree. Why should I have to keep the beautiful body that God gave me covered up? What's sex got to do with it?
Other people have pointed out here that there's no difference between being seen in your underwear and being seen in a bikini or swimming trunks. Dead right. Why should I have to go out of the room when a girl's getting changed if all I'm going to see is her tummy and legs?

Well Mark, then you might as well save yourself the money and stop buying clothes so you can go show off your beautiful body to everyone. I am sure the members of your Church are just dying to see you in the nude. :tongue

If it is your wife who is changing into a bathing suit, then that is okay. I don't know of any girl who wants guys in the room with her while she is changing, even if it's just her tummy and legs that are visible. Most women want their privacy.

Remember to do nothing that causes your Brother (or Sister) in the Lord to stumble.

Wow I didn't know they made such a thing! They're actually kind of cute, but people might look at you like, "Why is she jumping off the diving board in a dress?" lol

Nice site Lovely. Besides the fact that they are all flowery paterns, they are attractive and Modest in the eyes of this guy.

In all honestly this argument annoys me. Its often used as a scape goat to blame a brother for your own sin. Truth be told you shouldn't be anywhere near a situation where your tempted. If you cannot handle a woman or man in a bathing suit, stay away from the pool.

That is not to say that shouldn't think of a brother or sister. It is to safe to say however if lust is an issue for you, then you should stay away from places you will be tempted. It would be better to deal with the sin however and remove it from your life.

Modesty is largely culturally dictated. Some places in the world they wear far less clothes then in western society yet modesty doesn't come into it. And there is a difference between saying that man/woman is beautiful, and day dreaming of sleeping with them. Recognizing that difference is important. And not putting off dealing with your weakness as your brothers/sisters fault. "The devil made me do it" isn't really a get out of jail free card, neither is "my brother tempted me".
