My five sons have taught themselves guitar and drums. The oldest started the trek in music, and after he was killed the others took over.
 
I have been playing guitar for 21 years and I sing as well.

I have been in choirs and male quartets since my highschool years and I am the director of the local Barbershop chorus here in my town. I also teach highschool choir at my school.

I also play a bit of piano, mandolin and I can play the bass guitar if I have to.
 
Great because I have a new site. It is called Musicians For God, and I am a drummer, but I also have some guitar threads over there, I play a little guitar I own 2, a Fender Strat and a Ovation C-11 acoustic, and i have a Kay 1954 C-1 upright bass and 2 keyboards. I should be finished with the site tomorrow, I don't have to much to do.

I loved it I listened to Fanny Fontane and I loved it great going man. Tommorrow which will be February the 1st, I am going to transfer my site over to another Invision hosting company, so the URL will change, but I will let you guy's know. But as far as Por Victoria, I would like to do a biography of you cats, in my biography section, Or post your CD.

Ultimately, I am a Bluegrass flatpicker. I also am a fingerstyle player.

I really like Steve Bell (He is a Canadian gospel musician from Winnipeg, Manitoba). His music is along the lines of John Michael Talbot and early Michael Card. A great guitar player who writes alot of scripture songs. I like to perform his stuff at church.

As far as singing goes, I like quartetting and am a Southern Gospel music fan. I love the Cathedral Quartet, Florida Boys, Signature Sound, Palmetto State Quartet and Poet Voices. I also like many contemporary quartets like Glad and Acappella.

I love choral music. I have sung tenor in choirs since highschool. I like much of the choral classics (Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Allegri,Tallis Victoria etc), and alot of 20th century composers' music as well John Rutter, Morten Lauridsen, Mark Hayes, some Rachmaninoff, Elgar and Gorecki.

I don't think there is any other music so close to God and so powerful than choral music (especially acappella). I dare you to listen to Lauridesen's "O Magnum Mysterium", Gorecki's "Totus Tuus" (too bad this is basically Mary veneration, I'd love to do it in my school), Barber's "Agnus Dei" or Rutter's entire "Requiem" and come away unmoved!

Long live choral music!
 
Well guibox, I get into it all, I still do old and southern gospel, but I like the the more modern gospel like R&B gospel, Rock gospel, Jazz gospel, Country gospel, and some Rap gospel, and I love classical gospel like what Richard Smallwood does. He mixes classical and R&B gospel, and on occasion they will do a jazz gospel peace. What i like about all this. Is that some who would never listen to the gospel will, because it meets them where they are. And millions have come to Christ because of it. But as for me, I have always got into all types of music, from soul to rock, metal, on down to the 3 tenors, Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti.
 
Yes, my musical tastes are all over. From bluegrass, country and folk,to pop, rock, metal (from the 60s to the 90s), classical, choral and barbershop and southern gospel.

The only music that I really can't deal with is techno/dance and rap...ick
 
Basically, I'm a self-taught, play it by ear guitarist, mostly acoustic, so I stick primarily to rhythm and some flat-picking. I can read lead sheets, but that's about it. I play acoustic behind four or five vocalists and Yamaha keyboard in the church's praise team.

Do you have any influences concerning the acoustic, Vic?

I was heavily influenced by John Denver, Gordon Lightfoot and Paul Simon(finger picking/folk) and Tony Rice and Ricky Skaggs (flat-picking).

I like to try doing some of Leo Kottke's stuff as well. Recently I have discovered Bruce Cockburn's excellent style too. He is a really good guitarist.
 
I grew up listening to the likes of Paul Simon, James Taylor, etc. but could never master finger picking. M main influences are the whole country rock/southern rock/folk rock genre of the seventies. I wish I could play lead like Vince Gill or Chet Akins, but my fingers aren't as quick as the notes in my head. LOL I come across sounding like Dickey Betts or Toy Caldwell.

Of course being 48, the Beatles are probably my biggest influence. I "love" playing blues-style guitar and enjoy the classic blues guitarists and their musical descendants.

Hi Lewis, I play the piano by ear, but I don't read notes. I can sit down and pick out songs and I can make up songs. It's a good stress reliever, but if someone tries to teach me a note ....FORGET IT!
I have a digital piano that has some great sound effects, but I would rather have a piano. Maybe one of these days i'll get one.

Hi Destiny, how long have you been playing ? many musicians play by ear, I don't read that good at all. I play by what I hear and feel. So feel free to post and ask qustions there. I created 3 keyboard threads there. I think I will add one for horns and one for singers. And that should do it.
