I know what I beleive on this topic...just curious to see what everyone else thinks. Do you feel murder is the same as a lie? Or do you beleive that there are degrees of sin in which God will punish differently or more harshly?

Just something I've always found interesting to think about.

Well, any sin separates us from God. Punishment for one sin could be more severe than another, but that's simply a matter of atonement for the sin. When you have received the gift of salvation, all your sins have been paid for, thus the punishment is endurable and helps us grow, because Christ's propitiation is complete. If you haven't received salvation, your sins are not atoned for and you are subject to punishment. But for every sin there is an equal and opposite reaction that God set up. It doesn't have to do with severity really. If I steal, something will be taken from me, be it my honor or God's blessings for that time. If I murder, the equal and opposite reaction will fall upon me, unless, for some reason, a longer but more useful reaction is devised by God, like life in prison to reach out to other lost souls.

I voted yes, and here's why:

Mosaic Law only had one sacrifice for sin (Leviticus 23:19), so that would suggest that there is no distinction. And GundamZero makes a valid point (worth considering) in that all sin separates us from God.

However, there is one exception to the rule in Matthew 12:31 and again in Mark 3:28 and Luke 12:10. This, imho, says that blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is a greater degree of sin.

(1 John 5:16) If anyone sees his brother sin a sin not to death, he shall ask, and He shall give him life for those that do not sin to death. There is a sin to death, I do not say that he shall pray for it.

(1 John 5:17) All unrighteousness is sin, and there is a sin not to death.

That's true, Kwag_Myers. :) But blaspheme of the Holy Spirit is simply rejecting the Holy Spirit permanently. :crying: Though it is the unforgivable sin, it is the only one, so that doesn't really put degrees to sin, it really just makes that particular sin the doozy, because any one who dies before accepting the Salvation of God has committed blaspheme against the Spirit. You're basically calling the Holy Spirit a lier, because in the end it is the Holy Spirit that convicts every soul and leads them to Christ. (And, as I said before, they will receive the just punishment or equal reaction to such a sin) So you're right, in a way, but that is a little too isolated to put any degrees to sin as a whole. :-? (I'd rather not take the chance though)

I agree that ALL sin will get u hell but there r some that God hates more than others. Sex sins will get u a curse, abomination and what would be refered to as wickedness will get turned over to a reprobate mind to believe a lie and be damned, and blasphemy will get u as far from God as east is to west.
