What denomination, if any, are the COGIC, Church of God in Christ Churches? There are a lot of them in the area that I work, but none that I know of in the area that I live. Just wondering.

They are a Pentecostal denomination, and i believe they are the largest Pentecostal denomination. It is a predominatly black church

Thanks, I just keep running into them all over town here and I wondered what the need was for so many of the same. I think you are right about your last statement. This is a very ethnicly diverse city.

COGIC is a Pentecostal church of the Holiness type. They believe in instantaneous santification, and then the Baptism with the HS, with the evidence of speaking in other tongues. The founder was Bishop charles H. Mason, and in the beginning it was a mixed-race church, and Bishop Mason ordained Blacks and Whites to the ministry. Eventually the whites got their behinds on their backs and ddidn't want to be affiliated with a Black church, and the Assemblies of God was born in 1914.

COGIC is growing rapidly and numbers around 5 million. They do not, thankfully, practice the "ordination" of women.

They have a very nice website. Check it out.

Really, they don't ordain women? That is most peculiar for a trinitarian pentecostal church.

Nope. Never have. In fact, I read an article by Presiding Bishop patterson which stated they don't want to be ordained. So, more power to COGIC. I wish other churches were the same.

amen!
I got saved in a Penetcostal church. Church of God (cleveland,tn) http://www.chofgod.org
One problem I always had was women pastors and women preaching. The would have women evangelists and everything come in. I never could understand this because it is in direct opposition to scripture, yet they were very literal-bible believing about everything else.
