I'm a former goth, and I would say that a good majority of the goth culture is against our religion, but I don't necessarily think that goth and christianity is a poor mix. :)

Being a former Goth, what aspects of this Goth "cult" mentality were you involved in, and why don't you think it isn't a poor mix with Christianity?

Why would anyone want to mix Goth with Christianity? It's an oxymoron, to say the least.

The description below is not a complete list of the many definitions of what a Goth stands for. The definition of terms is ambiguous

Here's a brief overview created by Randy Johnson of what percentage of different groups compose the whole of the Gothic population. The percentages are intended to give you a general idea, there are not any researched numbers behind it. It is not meant to be statistically accurate.

Weekenders are the kids who are just going through a phase, following a trend, or doing it to be cool. They are the ones who like to dress up gothic on weekends and go out to the clubs, but are only familiar with the most superficial aspects of the culture. They are essentially the wannabes, and they eventually move on to something else.

Ultra Goths describes the more stable portion of the community. They have been in the scene for a long time. Usually, they are more extreme in appearance than others. There are other definitions for Ultra Goths. In its use here, it is meant to designate those people for whom gothic is who they are, not what they dress up as.

Satanists includes some Theatrical and Experimental Satanists and some Proclaimed Satanists. This is a very small percentage of Goths. Satanists can be found in almost any random group of people. They are not exclusively Goths.

Vampires also comprise a very small percentage of Goths. These are the people who are excessively fixated on vampires and want to look like a vampire and/or drink blood. There are many people who have an interest in vampires, but in this category we specifically mean those who are a little too enthusiastic.

What is "Christian" about that? :o

Christianity is looking to the indwelling of the sacred purity of the Holy Spirit of Christ Jesus. Goth is not of the same Holy Spirit of Christ Jesus.
For anyone to mix the two would be absurd. The mindset of the Goth is far from the mindset of the Holy spirit indwelling in and through the Christian who seeks to be Christ-like in Spirit and in truth of the Holy Word of JHVH GD.

Hi Guys!

As an 'old-timer', I googled Goth, months ago, & much of what came up related to occult fascination.. :o

(as well as gothic architecture & the original Germanic tribe, etc)

All occult practices are forbidden by Deuteronomy 18:9-13, as they all have adverse FX on us lil' ol' humans :-?

As a veteran of talking to Teddy Boys, Mods, Rockers, Hippies, Skinheads, Punks etc, as well as having mixed regularly with many Christian teens who wore the gear but abhorred Satanism, etc, the same kind of varied analysis above could be made @ all those other fashion fads since the '50s

Welcome on site, dude!

Ian :-D

As far as a satanic mentality is concerned, of course that is wrong. But as for dressing up goth, there are ways you can water it down to make it acceptable. Just make sure people understand where you stand. For a pure heart, everything is pure. But for an impure heart, nothing is pure.

In other words, dress how you like, BE a Christian.\

If it is too difficult for you to separate the satanic impression, don't dress Goth. It's as simple as that. Don't think about a check list of right and wrong, think for yourself. If you ask around and read up, you can judge for your self what is and isn't in the lines of proper Christian attire.

Ya know, whenever I think about the verse, "Avoid the appearance of evil" I don't think Paul had the color of black in mind, he meant, by the way we act and interact with someone, now if I was to dress with an actaul pentagram necklace (which I'd never do) or some other type of satanic or demonic symbol on, I wouldn't be setting a good example now would I?

Right.

It all has to do with how to be a proper Christian. Let your personal style take a back seat to being a Christian, and I garuntee Christ will give you a reptutation.

I was just into wearing black T-shirts and listening to rock music. typical 90's high school unk suff.

I do think that some of the Goth culture doesn't fit well with my religion. I mean, I would never show up to my churc in face makeup, eyeshadow, a million body piercings and blaring Cradle of Filth (In fact, you show up ANYWHERE like that in Taunton, and five burly Portuguese guys are going to beat you up).
However, I don't think it is necessarily Anti-christian to have some elements of Goth in your lifestyle or former lifestyle.

Ok lol, you weren't "Goth". you kinda dressed like it though, but as far as musical tastes and outlook, you weren't Goth, and definately not "Gothic"

I personally think Goths are tryhards. They try so hard to be different, but really, they're not being different at all, they are just following a trend. I know many people at my high school who used to be Goth, but have grown out of it. Nobody stays a Goth for life. To me, it's just a passing teenage craze.

Also, how are people supposed to go out and preach the word to all creation, while at the same time be covered in tattoos, 10 piercings in each ear etc. because people wouldn't be paying attention to what you were telling them about God. They'd be too busy looking at the 10 piercings in each of your ears.

It's definitely the wrong image for a Christian to go. Individuality is fine, but Goths take it too far (and they're not even truly individuals anyway)

2) AJB4 when you said that people would be looking at the pericings more than the person that in itself is fairly un-christain in itself becase i though christians were supposed to look deeper than a persons apearence....

I agree, but like it or not, appearances are the first thing people see when they look at you. If I was of the world, and a goth Christian came to my door to tell me about God, and they looked like that, then I'd imagine my mind would be quite closed to them pretty quick. You can't tell people about God dressed up like the devil. :-?

You can't tell people about God dressed up like the devil
well i am sorry to say this but i dont beleive that in the bible it gave a vivid description of teh devil and i extemely doubt it said that the devil wore all black and had 10 peircings..a lthough some of the demons may have had them to symbolize pain and such

I know the bible didn't give an accurate description of what the devil looked like  but if the devil had a physical human form, I'd imagine that's what he'd be dressed up like: a goth.

lol i can understand your notion but i have goth friends

but heres a small part of my philosphy on life
reality is nothing but what you define it as. for example the word goth was made by a human so each human can define its meaning differently and also each person can define his or her definition of evil so i respect your opionion

Being a Goth has nothing to do with God, the Bible, or even Christianity....our entire youth (120 kids) dress "Goth" or "Sk8er" and they are the best Christians I know....and trust me, I know a lot. Just cuz you dress a certain way doesn't change your love for Christ therefore it should not matter if you show up in black, with black nail polish, piercings everywhere, or even a tattoo.........Granted God did command that you should treat your body as a Temple for God, but watever floats ur boat. Hey, its better to be yourself, than to fake it and start up a stained-glass masquerade. It doesn't matter to Christ as long as you openly profess your love for God instead of Satan.

Its funny really, to say Satan would dress like that, my girlfriend saw Satan (a sihlilotte) he spoke to her, saying she wasn't worthy enough to see his face (this was at her breaking point before coming back to God several years ago) but anyway, one of the great tricks Satan has is that he'll look so nice and kind, think about it, what BETTER way to trick someone? He's NOT going to be obvious about ANYTHING, until it's too late, so about the whole "He'd dress as a goth" I think he'd dress for the occasion in my opinion, different costumes for different people. As for paying preaching the word while dressed as the devil, who are other goths more likely to listen to, some clean-cut, teen, or another goth? (not saying they wouldn't, given time and such, but still)
