This is a short story that I wrote for English class. We wrote a paragraph describing a cold day using the five senses for an exercise. I added to it and made it a final copy.
Cold Day
It was a cold day. I opened the door and immediately heard the wind whistle through the tall trees as they swayed back and forth. As I walked towards the end of the driveway, I saw headlights slowly approaching me. With every breath, cold, frozen air rushed into my nostrils. The warm smell of burnt toast became the sweet smell of fresh air as I walked farther from my house. When I looked at the wet ground, I could almost taste the water trickling down my throat.
Memories of mountains and snow-covered trees reappeared in my mind. Life here is so much different, but some things remain the same. Like snow crunching beneath my feet.
I remember waking up at 5:00 in the morning, ready to begin the journey up the steep, icy mountain. I had prepared myself for the all of the dangers that might occur, but I failed to prepare myself for the beauty of the scenery. When I looked down it was as if the whole world was beneath me. I was just a tiny spec trying to survive in this cruel world. I realized that it is impossible to do it alone.
The memory left my mind as I gazed at the beauty that surrounded me while I stood outside my house. I was back home now; even here, I was standing in the midst of God’s magnificent creation.
