I ask that question because I've heard so many people telling me or someone else that:
"God wants you to..."
"God wants me to ..."
God wants people to..."
I wonder then that if God always gets what He wants then why don't people do the things God wants them to do? That suggests that even though God wants something He doesn't always get it.
But does that diminish the power of God?

It doesn't diminish His power. It does demonstrate our free will though.

I don't think God gets all of His desires met, such as his desire that all will be saved or that I am sure he desires we don't give into temptation.

No, it does not diminish His power. His charater is not based upon our actions or behavior.

No, God does not always get what He wants.
2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
It's God's will that no one should go to hell.
Lots of people choose to go to hell anyway.

God is not a person like we are. It is us who suffers from wants. The idea that God is wanting is absurd, because God lacks nothing. God is all that is true. It is the human mind that constructs wants from an unreal belief of lacking something. It is better to rephrase these statements by replacing the word God with Truth (for that is what God is).

However, Truth also lacks nothing, and therefore does not want anything to make it true. So, the idea is that it is best for us to be true. All these so called 'wants' is nothing more than an expression of 'be true'. To be truthful, to be genuine, to be authentic, to be unconditional towards truth and love. In this way, we become in communion with God.

Yes, God always gets what He wants.

Isaiah 55:11
11 So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth;
It shall not return to Me void,
But it shall accomplish what I please,
And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.../

When people do not do what God wants them to do (which is possible, free will), then He simply raises up someone else to do it for Him.
Nothing can diminish the power of God.

No, God doesn't always get what He wants. God made us free moral agents, giving us the right to choose. I Tim.4:10 teaches that He is the saviour of all men. In Jn.3:16 its whosoever believes. In Rev.3:20 He knocks at the door and comes in only to those who open. In Jn.5:39,40 we are to search the scriptures for they are life but some will not come that they may have life. I could go on and on.

Since you put it that way...I have to agree with you.
Good catch Brother.

God wants us to pay attention to what is true. Those that do, then God got what was 'wanted'. Those that do not, then God still got what was 'wanted' the true believers, and not unbelievers.

It is like God is the product to be had in a shop. Salvation is the shop itself. Those that want salvation enter the shop to find God. God wants those that enter the shop, and know not those that do not enter the shop. (see Matthew 7:23)

What Scripture says God wants something?

"Does God always get what He wants?"

Why assume God has wants?

I think that's all over the bible, Brother, where God wants something from us. Some may not say the exact term "wants" but it means the same thing. Like
1 Timothy 2:4
4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.../(KJV)

Micah 6:8
8 He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?...(KJV)

It could be written...Who wants all men to be saved...
What doth the Lord want from thee...

Scripture speaks of what God wants all over the place when it speaks of God's will. God's will is what God wants.

Ok.
With that then if He wants us to love our neighbor and there are people that don't then ...
See the dilemma?

I agree God's will is what He wants, and God's Will, will always be done. God has desires, too, he desires that all men be saved, this is only His desire, not His will because if it was his will, all people would be saved.

That is how I learned it, maybe you or others will have more insight.

Thanks for the specific examples that say God wants something, brother. Not sure about His wants being all over the Bible, but let's look (study) the details of the examples given (especially the ...) and see what it is exactly that He wants. Maybe He does get all He wants:

1.
1 Timothy 2:3-8 This is good and acceptable before God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and human beings, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself a ransom for all, the testimony at the proper time, for which I was appointed a herald and an apostle—I am speaking the truth, I am not lying—a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. Therefore I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger and dispute.
It is acceptable that God wants:
1. All people to be saved
2. All people to come to a knowledge of the truth.
3. The men in every place to pray without anger and dispute.
4. Paul, at the proper time, to hearld the faith and truth to the Gentiles (non-Jews).

Did God get 4??? Yes. Paul heralded the faith and truth to the Gentiles at the proper time (not to early nor to late). Check✅

Did God get #3??? Yes. Men (Jew and Gentile Christians) now pray without anger/dispute toward each other all over the world. Whereas before Christ, a Gentile couldn't even enter into the inner Temple. I had dinner just tonight (halfway around the world from Paul) with a 'Jewish' Christian. No dispute, no anger. Both praying to God in Christ's name. Check✅

Did God get #2??? Yes. Jews and non-Jews (Gentiles) both have now come to a knowledge of the truth. Versus only the Jews. Check✅

Did God get #1??? Yes. Any person (Jew or Gentile, any human being really) can now be saved in Christ, the mediator between not just Jews but all humans. Check✅

2.
Micah 6:6-8 With what shall I approach Yahweh, and bow down to God on high? Shall I approach him with burnt offerings, with bull calves a year old? Will Yahweh be pleased with thousands of rams, with myriads of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He has told you, O mortal, what is good, and what does Yahweh ask from you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

Did God get the pleasure of all people now (at the proper time) bowing down to Him in worship without the need of animal sacrifices??? Yep. No need for Temple sacrifices whether you are a Jew or not. Check✅

Very good

I would say if all things are according to God's plan then yes, in every sense He gets what He wants.

If God always gets what he wants then everyone is saved and death is destroyed. Wasn't that God's plan from the start?
John 6:44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.
