And so you now think that maybe science (Wait, can we really call this science?) should revert to lobotomies and shock as alternatives? I would also ask if with incentives concerning funding, is there a new pill coming at ten times the price? :shrug

I dunno...I think serious mental problems require meds (clearly...I'm on 4 of them), and severe depression usually requires meds, but...I think there's a problem when so many people are medicated and/or being "treated" by "experts" for problems that could, once upon a time, have been solved with friends, family, prayer, life changes, etc.

Clearly, I have 0 problems with experts when they're needed. I just think...well, we have this myth going that talk therapy is "good for you," as if talking to a "professional" is always more helpful than talking to a friend, a relative, a minister, yourself. I'm not so sure I buy that. I mean, personally, when I was going off the rails and needed counselling every 2 weeks, I was thankful to have it. But I have severe problems and even I now only go every 6-8 weeks. Why are people with much less severe problems being encouraged to "treat" the "issues" with every shiny, new pill and every new, "advanced" therapy (paid for by good insurance, of course) ?

I think talk therapy can be just as damaging as bad psychiatry, it just isn't as obvious.

.
CE, what you say is true of all medical practice. Even those practitioners with good intentions are brought into pushing certain drugs sponsoring their particular practice. Have you ever had pills given you for free you've never heard of? How do certain new drugs ever make it to the market, and then later have to be removed. Even established or condoned methods of treatment for some malady is often removed as unbeneficial. Where is our federal control; in someone's pocket? :shrug

We must be careful. Irony, asking about the radiation of a smart meter while holding one large tablet using it as a phone.

The answer is, quite clearly...... $$$$.

Thanks for the book recommendation.
Easily as good as The Naked Ape by: Desmond Morris (written about the same time.... Well... same decade [century?] anyway, I think) A lot of good stuff written back then.... like Why Am I Afraid To Tell You Who I Am? by: John Powell, I believe.

Apparently, the benefit from antidepressant drugs has been over-estimated...and now, the same is true of the benefits of any form of psychotherapy. Maybe its time for us to reclaim some emotional states as normal and also psychospiritual issues? Just a thought...

The fact that "shrinks" will actually encourage and lead a person to cut off their body parts, is full proof that something is not quite right within the dark and ominous "behavioral science" world.
On the other hand, the gender change surgery community is making a mint.

There's definitely a huge profit motive within Mental Health, Inc., but I don't think that's the only issue. The secular shrinks, in particular, are there to enforce their version of secular society's values. Based on my own experience, that means that you get about as much compassion and understanding as you can afford or that you "deserve," based on your social standing (or your family's, in an area like mine).

So...its kind complicated, and frightening, too, at times.
