Does the bible forbid this?

A friend pointed out that in the past, a very long time ago, that English women (Christians) dressed only in decent gowns. Trousers were not part of the culture.

"But water went up hills after Christ didn't arrive yet; and immorality began to sweep across our dressing... " kinda statement

As weird as this sounds!

What was the world's original culture.
 
That is the tough part, considering during biblical times, especially when Isreal was first a nation, men and women dressed very similarly. I would go so far as to assert that pants hadn't even been invented at that point. This was probably developed during the time of the great empires (persian, babylonian, greek, roman, etc...).

Well, at first they wore nothing, and then God dressed them in animal skins.

First of all, I am so thankful that you open your replies by introducing yourself. Otherwise I would be completely at a loss as to who is actually responding.

Anyway, apparently this was something I may have overlooked when reading this section of the bible. Though, I do wonder if anyone was really able to tell what the high priest was wearing under his robes, unless of course a gust of wind blew up his old address.
 
From the King James Version:

"The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the Lord thy God."

From the New Living Translation (only because it's easier to understand the language):

Deuteronomy 22:5
"A woman must not put on men’s clothing, and a man must not wear women’s clothing. Anyone who does this is detestable in the sight of the Lord your God."

Not sure how our culture got to the point of having clothes that are worn by both men and women, but at this point jeans and t shirts are not so much men's clothes and women's clothes, but are seen as just clothes. (Though I think many of our clothes are made and talored differently for men and women so the rule should still be applied when appropriate). Still, don't know how different the culture was back then. If there were shared clothes worn by men and women (like modern day pants and t shirts), or if this law was given to forbid it and they made a difference between what men wore and women wore.
 
I read a write up that it was ( not these exact words) the spirit of the reason behind doing this that is what is wrong with it.

Had this 'discussion ' with my Dad about 1961.... Politely in some words... i asked what was the clothing for men at the time the Scriptures were written ? A robe or tunic.. ?

I have often ask, " If your wife cuts grass on a riding lawn mower, should she wear a dress or a pair of pants?"

Discussion in quotes has me wondering. Hope it didn't start as a fight or end in a fight.

I don't know what to make of this rule yet. Deffinately makes a point about cross dressers. But most men's clothes are also work clothes and comfort/leasure clothing, and has been adopted for both men and women. Then there's also some cases in American history where women faught in a war only because they disguised themselves to look like men (also that's part of the plot of the animated movie Mulan). By some people that was a revolutionary step before women's equality, or a heroic tale of women patriotic spirit. On the other hand, it makes me more squeamish thinking of women dying on a battle field, then it does thinking of men dying and fighting in a battle.

Just a few thoughts on this verse before I make peace with it one way or another.
 
nope. we could politely argue with Dad... At that time girls had to wear skirts or dress to school... but when i was not in school or church.. i wore jeans still do.. :)

It is easy to spot a woman trying to look like a man or vice versa..

Actually i wore Levis back then 501s... but we girls 'fixed ' our Levis,,, turned the cuffs under about mid calf took the W off the pockets removed the belt loops rolled the waistband over on it's self.. and Dads old white shirt...
