1 Corinthians 7:10, 11 Jesus commands the woman not to leave her husband and if she does she should remain unmarried or be reconciled back to her husband, but in Malachi 2:10-16 the treachery that man commits against a woman which leads him to have an affair outside of the marriage or abuses the wife whether it be physical or emotional gives place to what was said by Moses in Deuteronomy 24:1-4 that if a woman is no longer pleasing to her husband then the husband should give his wife a written bill of divorcement and send her out of the house and this gives the woman the right to marry again, but she can never go back to her former husband if that marriage does not work out or her husband dies for now she is defiled to be with her first husband and this is an abomination to God.

God despises divorce but then God is also the God of new beginnings and there are circumstances. However, there are men and women like Charles Stanley of Atlanta. Brother Stanley's wife left him and he remains a man of one wife, none the less. He has become Celibate. She divorced him and God, at least now, has not remove His anointing from Brother Charles and he still preaches the truth of God's Word. I know not of the former Mrs, Stanley but I will hazard a guess that all is not well with her.

I would say God found no fault in the man that He placed as a Pastor to oversee His flock. If God finds no fault then others need not discriminate against him just because his wife left him. The congregation needs to lift him up and not put him down.

I don't know. salvation is the -big- thing. leading a flock...takes a special person. if circumstances arise, perhaps the leader should find a new vocation, or just...retire.

Does this apply to all church leaders including pastors?
1 Timothy 3:1-13 NKJV
Qualifications for Overseers
This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work. A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach; not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous; one who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence (for if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?); not a novice, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation as the devil. Moreover he must have a good testimony among those who are outside, lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

Qualifications of Deacons
Likewise deacons must be reverent, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy for money, holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience. But let these also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons, being found blameless. Likewise, their wives must be reverent, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things. Let deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
Have you ever heard anyone take the passage above as saying if a a husband's wife dies, and the man gets married a second time, then he is disqualified from the office of Bishop?

A lot depends upon the details of the situation. Lets examine what the Scriptures say:

For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law that binds her to him. So then, if she has sexual relations with another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress if she marries another man. Romans 7:2-3 New International Version

A widow/widower who remarries would only have one spouse. He/she has been released from his/her first earthly marriage, and people do not marry in heaven.

At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. Matthew 22:30 NIV

Contrast this with civil divorce. If there was no immorality involved, and he was married to a believer, a man who remarries while the wife of his youth is still around may Biblically have 2 wives (except for unfaithfulness). Can man separate God has joined together by simply writing something on paper?

So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate. Matthew 19:6 NIV

I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery. Matthew 19:9 NIV

No. Is there anything about no remarrying after the death of a spouse? Romans 7:2 tells us the death of a spouse releases one from the law of marriage.

Oops, I see Michael74 has already posted this.

Exactly my point, and Michael74 did an excellent job outlining it.
We can't always take passages at face value and we must use discernment within the totality of scripture.

Btw, I have heard it argued legalistically that a Bishop is disqualified if he marries after his wife passes....

jasonc makes an interesting point. that's one thing I actually kind of like about the Catholic annulment process. They analyze the details of a failed marriage to see if it was ever a genuinely valid union to start with, under their interpretation of Scripture.

Consider:

Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh." 1 Corinthians 6:16 NIV

Nor ignore but if thy unbelieving wide departs ,seek not another wife for God has called you to peace.

If you aren't married in this type ,you dont know.I'm not looking for a divorce but I will say it does affect your walk .

You can't change your spouse nor save them.

If God put you together...all too often He didnt, you and her or him did.
jasonc, that is a great point as not all marriages are put together by God, but by ones own worldly desire. One can be in love with just the word love or the word marriage and end up not finding the true love God speaks of and joins together as one flesh. I wish I had realized that with my first two failed marriages that ended in divorce as now I know my husband and I are truly joined together by God.

Yet God does change hearts in such marriages.my parents married 40 years isn't what i.call one. My mom has said she isn't love with my dad and hasn't been in love with him in decades.

That's sad.... love is an action... scriptures teach the women to unconditionally respect their husbands, and for the men to unconditionally love their wives.
It's not easy for a man to love a woman when she shows disrespect for him. Equally, it is hard for a woman to show respect for a man when he shows little love toward her.

My dad is an ass at times .I forgive him for his past but he has some issues that are his alone to fix.I'm not saying my.mom.was perfect .despite this sad situation they weren't the worst at parenting.john and I have discussed avoiding their pitfalls.my.brother has been more pro active in his fatherhood. He is way more into his kids then my dad was with us.

Hmm an old wound ,I thought I had dealt with that one.I see it still festering. Must be the high school reunion on my.mind.

You are young enough that you never put in fifty years working. I did and when they put me on SSDI did not want to quit, I had worked some job for over fifty-four years and I was still building my Safe Driver year tags.

People seem to never take me serious when I speak of the difference it makes when I explain in Plainer Words that choosing a wife in the back seat is, absolutely, incorrect and there is a huge difference if one accepts the Will of God and remains celibate until He brings your Mate to you.

i did my first three marriages the wrong way and did not want another wife but God had a better plan and delivered my fourth wife, my first Christian Wife and we have been happily married and ministering the Gospel for over 27 years.

A man such as Brother Charles Stanley belongs in the pulpit, knows he was called of God to be there and is willing to sacrifice his Carnal Desires to remain qualified, these men should e lauded by all, God has poured out his Blessings on them.

Nor ignore but if thy unbelieving wide departs ,seek not another wife for God has called you to peace.

But if the unbeliever leaves, let it be so. The brother or the sister is not bound in such circumstances; God has called us to live in peace. 1 Corinthians 7:15 NIV

You can't change your spouse nor save them.

How do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband? Or, how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife? 1 Corinthians 7:16 NIV
