no way!

i hate when peopel decide that their stupid lifestyles should ruin the lives of BILLIONS of animals, and humans

I absolutely despise people that buy humvees and suv's and dont have any need for them, but buy them for looks. i mean cmon!!!

# 3.8 mpg worst at 78 miles per hour
# 6.8 mpg best easy in town driving

8. Mother Earth Won’t Like You, Either Beyond compromising the safety and well-being of yourself, your passengers, and other drivers, by driving a Hummer you are endangering the health of the planet itself. Hummers, with their absurd weight, are exempt from meeting ANY emission standards. In other words, Hummers and other extremely large SUVs, such as the Ford Excursion, are allowed to pollute as much as they want without any government interference. Not only does the Hummer emit over 3 times more carbon dioxide than an average car, hastening global warming, but it gives off substantially more smog-producing pollutants and dangerous particulates as well. These are issues affecting all of us today, especially children. In fact, rates of asthma among our nation’s children have increased to the point of constituting an epidemic. Furthermore, the EPA released a devastating report on 4/15/04 that indicates nearly one in five counties nationwide are breathing unhealthy air, affecting an estimatetd 159 million Americans. Is your Hummer really worth the very air you breathe?

While I think that drilling could be conducted in Alaska in a way that isn't hugely detrimental to the immediate region, I think that to continue to rely on fossil fuels is simply the wrong direction.

America's greatness over the years has come from our investment as a society in the next technological steps, such as our advances during the space race.

We need to start weaning ourselves off fossil fuels as the main source of our power. Counting natural gas for electricity generation, we are extremely overly dependent on fossil fuels.

We can't solve it in the short term...and we will likely pay higher gas prices in the short term as a result, but we need to invest in the next generation of energy sources.

I don't know if that's solar, wind, geothermal, fuel cells, nuclear or a combination of all of the above, but unless we invest in R&D for all of them we'll never know.

I'm not utterly opposed to going into ANWAR, but to do that alone under the idea that that will solve anything in the long term is myopic at best.

I voted yes. Although the question was a little biased. I do not support gas guzzling cars and I think peoples attitudes about energy needs to be changed. The fact still remains that we need domestic energy for our future (Remember, people are more important than animals). We can drill for oil in Alaska and protect the environment at the same time.

The only viable alternate energy source is nuclear. There has not been a nuclear plant built in the US in over 25 years due to the expense of abiding by federal regulations. It is a safe and proven energy source and we have perfected it so there is minimal waste. However, I think the long term affect on the environment by storing radioactive waste is worse for nuclear energy than any fossil fuel.

There are companies that make fuel cells now that can power your house and car. The only emission is water. The problem is they need hydrogen to work and we do not have the infrastructure to transport or pipe hydrogen througout the country. This will take many years if not decades.

I think the way to go is to design energy efficient buildings, use solar and wind when appropriate for housing and small businesses and mandate hybrid cars in the future or at least minimum efficiency for cars 10 years down the road. For now we need to drill domestic oil in Alaska and off the coast of California.

Edited to add:
Oil is used for more than gas and plastic toys. Many medical advances have been because of plastics. Our quality of life is better because of oil. How many plastic components are in the computer you are using right now? Would you give it up?

I am all for producing all the oil we can and breaking our nations dependence on other contries for fuel.

I am for off shore drilling.

I am for finding ways to cleanly and efficiently use coal for fuel.

I am for giving tax breaks and even tax money to companies that find ways to make us less dependent on oil.

We need to get all our resources working for us.

That is my opinion.

I am not an earth and animal worshipper so I say go for it! :biggrin

there are a tonne of options other than oil and coal
oil companies have been buying patents for fuel efficiency vehicles for decades, just so people wont use them
in britain they have at least 1 type of fully electric car, fuel cell powered motorcycles etc
wind power, power from the ocean waves, solar power, geothermal heating and cooling

there are many many options

a lot are happening in europe and in china they are turning to windpower in some regions because of the huge energy shortage they have

think about this, you can have a car with a gps, internet voice control etc but it still runs on the black goo we dig up from the ground ?

I agree there are tons of options. Let's use all of them...

15 year old builds a model hydrogen car that runs on water

Hydrogen is an energy carrier, like a battery, not an energy source, like gasoline. It takes far more energy, usually derived from fossil fuels, to produce hydrogen than the amount of energy that hydrogen can release in an engine. In the case of this tiny car, which comes in a kit, the sourse of the energy to produce the hydrogen is a solar cell. Solar cells are extremely inefficient, so while it is practical to produce enough hydrogen via solar power for a tiny toy car, it is not remotely practical to do the same for a real car.

Hydrogen is not the power source that is going to wean us off of fossil fuels. Read this article for more details on why it is physically impossible for it to be so.

a hydrogen fuel cell might be though

I am for keeping Alaska as a back up supply of oil as we wean ourselves off of it.

I think we should go to less fossile fuel energy sources because of the toxins and greenhouse gas. However, I think we should keep some going because we need diversity in energy sources.

I think we need to put a lot of money into energy research. A small gain in solar is a huge gain overall since when all energy sources on Earth are used up, solar will still be around. So it is the longest term solution.

I would like to see money put into nuclear power. We should go to breeder reactors so we use up the fuel instead of throwing away most of it as high level waste. We could either wok on burial technology for high level waste or research neutron burning of the high level waste so it doesn't last as long. Nuclear reactors will probably be the way we make hydrogen because it gets hot enough to do so.

I would like to see more fesearch into fusion since the main waste product is helium which leaks into space over time. But it is a very expensive technology to develop, but with great returns if it turns out well.

I agree. The most effecient source of power we know of derives it's power via fusion... the Sun.

With that said, I support alternative and renewable energy sources, always have... always will.

The Arctic region is the last true wilderness in the States.

If we drill up there it will spoil the last bit of soul this country has.

It is too bad a lot of Evangelicals have been brainwashed into supporting Bush and his oil cronies. The Arctic region is known as the "serrengeti" because it sports such an amazing diversity of animals.

Caribou, Polar Bears, Grizzly Bears, Wolves, Snow Geese, Wolverines, Perigrine falcons, Muskox, Dall sheep.......

The list goes on........

By defiling this land with more drilling and oil spillage that will soon follow, we betray the last bit of goodness left on this continent that has not been raped by materialistic goals and greedy businessman.

Thinking about this just about makes you want to end it all yourself. :x

More for the rest of us! :-D

You know Soma,

You could kill two birds with one stone here. You could sell your computer give the money to the poor and help save the environment at the same time.

Will you do that in an instant? ;-)

You only believe in black and white dont you berean?

There is no "gray area" in your perspective is their?

Okay, you won't practice what you preach. I can live with that... ;-)

Tell that to all the "fake" wildernesss at the hundreds of National Parks throughout the country.

I don't know how you are defining "soul", but if it's only in a state that is 1500 miles from any other and that didn't even become a state until 175 years after our country's founding, then I don't think we need any of this "soul"

All of these live in areas beside ANWAR as well. And all of these would continue to live in ANWAR even if drilling were allowed. I loathe Bush, probably as much as anyone on this board, but I agree with him in this issue.

Except for the tens of millions of square miles that haven't been touched.

May I ask an honest question of everyone in this thread? When do we stop? When does all this Oil Madness come to an end?
