Ok...
There's a full solar eclipse coming on the 21st.
Here in Nashville it's going to be fully eclipsed. So this place is going to be a madhouse. I'm taking off from work to keep off the road. Hotels are booked solid.
Last time it happened I lived in Idaho back in '77.
But everyone then got crazy about saying " don't look at the sun"
Things haven't changed since.

Everyone is going to the beach in Oregon here, but there is a fire now that I heard might impact views.

My mom said in 1977 they made their own glasses in school and watched it. Now you can buy glasses for $1.99.

I was thinking about the eclipse and a Bible study came to mind...

Back when Pharaoh "ruled" the many different gods and elements...
The Nile River, Heqt, hail, flies, gnats, rain, sun, moon, and stars.
The word would go out amongst the slave population that the Pharaoh was mad and upset about the productivity of the slaves. (Of course their mathematicians knew ahead of time when a solar eclipse would happen with a crude but effective form of calculus)
The day would come and the slaves would be called into hearing Pharaoh address them. Pharaoh would then tell the slaves that because of their lackluster efforts he was taking away the sun.
The Hebrews (who knew nothing much...they were simple minded uneducated slaves) would they cry out to Pharaoh about how sorry they were and that they would work harder. Begging Pharaoh to please bring back the sun. (The whole time the eclipse would progress).

Finally at the zenith of the eclipse the Pharaoh would relent and tell the Hebrew slaves that they better keep their promises.

So when Moses pronounced the various plaques...it was rather "unsettling" to say the least.

I've never heard that before. Where did you glean it from?

The Egyptians were fantastic understanding the cosmos. I don't remember exactly, but they had a building with lime 1,100 Windows. Each window was a view to the cosmos following something up there. Each cycle of some 1,100 years was called an age and spiritually, was a huge event.

Do you k ow what I'm talking about?

It was a method of putting a grid lines on the sky. Crude but effective.

Egypt, due to Joseph's/God's assistance with a view of the future, became a superpower. With a vast amount of wealth and food. (Commodity based economy)
As a result most of the technology of that time (including written language) was found there. Phonecians and Ugarit had a limited written language as well.

But the main thing was their sciences and mathmatics...under the guise of Pharaoh's/man's wisdom and religion. (Usually symbolized by a serpent)

Chaldeans were more known for their star charts...but a huge amount of talent from Chaldeans traveled the Spice Trade Route to the Via Maris or the Via Melekh (way of the Sea or the King's Highway) to Egypt. (The trade route established by Abraham)

Being able to navigate by the stars was a common thing. (Kinda helpful on the sea or the desert)

But because of their wealth Egypt attracted all kinds of talented people with skills. With their slave population it enhanced it even more. They funded all kinds of research in the Sciences. (Highly organized society) these sciences related directly to construction projects, food production, international trade, and public works.

But for all of this...the Bible still uses the same word for misery as they do for Egypt.
The Hebrew slaves pretty much ran around naked. The men wore a penis sheath and the women a small apron at the waist. (Any other clothing would be destroyed by the labor they did daily from beer vats to mud brick)

Good stuff

JANES magazine...
Journal of Ancient Near Eastern Studies.

It's for those who get excited when reading encyclopedias.
Ha, it's right down my alley! I'm kinda entrenched in learning advanced database and programming at My work, and miss my biblical studies, especially of the near east.

The company handed out expensive eye protection when we got here this morning. We will see 98-99% coverage, so there is no 'safe' time to look at the sun.

It starts here in 4 minutes, maximum coverage is 90 minutes from now. Should be quite a show.

Cloud cover was thick and near constant in my area, so all I got to see was it get dark and the insects and animals thinking it was evening.
