These are the names - Though this book is a continuation or the book of Genesis, with which probably it was in former times conjoined, Moses thought it necessary to introduce it with an account of the names and number of the family of Jacob when they came to Egypt, to show that though they were then very few, yet in a short time, under the especial blessing of God, they had multiplied exceedingly; and thus the promise to Abraham had been literally fulfilled. See the notes on Genesis 46 (note).

Exodus 1:1. the book is called Shemoth in Hebrew and to the Jews the most important book as that is their story and it defines the Torah with them being the center of it. Genesis left off with the 12 sons in Egypt. from the Adam Clarke commentary and my words on exodus 1.

Believe it or not I'm almost in the book of Exodus, but I'm really curious why my username was mentioned here. :confused

adam Clarke commentary. that was only verse one. he doesn't say much at times.

I will go along through exodus and post. I figured to encourage you to study the bible.

Oh okay, that would be very helpful you to post it on here because then I will be sure to read it. But yeah I'm almost in the chapter of Exodus.

on a note" genesis in Hebrew is beersherith. In the beginning God created. the Jews simply call the books by what they are talking about. the lxx did the same but Genesis in greek means origin and in my opinon doesn't carry the statement as does the Hebrew name.

when we get to the Name or the Heshem in Hebrew which means The Name I will go into that a bit. I'm not sure what Clarke will say.

awesome thread - this is very interesting - thank you

Torah! - yaaaaaay!

I cant ignore that the Pentateuch is the torah and overlook that. I'm not a rabbi nor was I raised in the temple so take that into consideration as the jews and messianic jews will approach kosher laws and Shabbat in depth. I will read up on that in Exodus when the time comes.

amen

quoting these here too so the don't get lost

we will touch this in the exodus thread since the shabat is based off that and when it starts and as all feasts do, sundown in Jerusalem or then when the priests observed the moon from the tabernacle or temple.

channukah never thought I still learn from doing that
amen - a day starts at sundown and ends at the next sundown
when we discuss Genesis we must remember it is meant to tell the story of How israel came to be. if you doubt see the last few chapters and then read exodus. remember Moses wrote that and his first audience read it or knew it from oral passing. I believe moses was raised to know it by his mother and dad. he circumcised his firstborn but not his second born until the Angel of the Lord was about to slay him.
why not his 2nd born?

I'm not sure, we will get there. I may go to Chabad to see what they say. it will be speculation but sometimes they have an interesting story to mention and it doesn't change that Moses was breaking the command given.

off topic the words law and torah will be interchangeable , in Jewish thought the word torah means instruction like a Dad gives to his son to follow and to guide him.

www.chabad.org and also asking my dad who was bar mitzvahed.

we gentiles tend to view the tanach as a greek would and miss the point of what the first audience would know readily. we here law and think as a cop enforcing a law passed in congress when the torah isn't close to that thought it has punishments. it was to teach. its later clearly stated by the Moses in Deuteronomy 4:6

we are to teach the nations.. so that they will know there is God in Isreal.

I didn't know it was his 2nd born but Zippora , Moses wife, seemed to have prevented him because she disapproved of the practice ..

edited to correct the verse as the earlier version had the shemah, hear oh Isreal our Lord God is one.

I will go into my grandparents and my connection to this when its time as I cant avoid them in thoughts. I was thinking of them and my dad and uncle and aunt who went to temple and the family in Savannah. there are back stories to that I felt when I went to savannah and will go into that.

In mentioning Greek:
I Corinthians 14:21 kjv
In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.

Isaiah 28:11 kjv
For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.
12 To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.

I am not positive Greek is the other language, but there is another language from what I read.

To brush Greek aside seems harsh, especially in sight of the stubborn nature of Jewish people that is over and over mentioned.

This is a bible study for growth. Shall we not grow from another language?
