I use the bible. LOL....Ok that was not a fair answer, but that's what I ultimately turn to.

I am the main spiritual mouthpiece in my family, or they might ask me a question from time to time, but we use what I like to call "catalyst" for spiritual discussion. News, gossip, movies, popular culture, life events, even sermons at church, all of these things I use to start conversations and weave in spiritual insight. It's tricky, but I've gotten better with practice.

I have a wife, a 10 and 13 year old. We are a Christian house, but I'm not so naive to think that just because we go to church and behave as Christians that my family does not struggle with their own worldly issues. So, I try to tap into the hearts and minds of my family to address those things from a biblical perspective. It's great when I can just rattle off scripture, but often times I leave the conversations having to do a little research and come back to them.

My wife might tell me about something that happened at work, or how she's feeling about an issue. My kids will do the same. They drop little insights into there soul all the time. So I try to pick those up, examine them, and apply them to Gods word. I may be able to do it very quickly and respond to them, or I may take some time and get back to them.

I find this type of devotional very powerful, because it's tailored to my family. My kids seem to appreciate it more than just having a sit down study, because it means more to them.

Frankly my wife and I like to read the Scriptures together and pray. We don't use a plan or scheme.

Blessings.

What about you Andrew. You have kids? how many? what do you use as a catalyst for devotions and biblical study in your home?

I have a 15 month old son. We too use the Bible. I'm a Pastor so I'm comfortable studying it and discussing it. In the past we've done devotions after dinner and we've also gone through the 10 Commandments of Marriage by Ed Young, Jr. Was just wondering if anybody else had used something they really liked. God bless!

Ah. Well, I'm no pastor, and I got to say, I felt overwhelmed in the early years of having a child wondering; "how I'm I going to do this?" teach them you're way"....to God of cores.

I became converted at 25. I'm 47 now. I was a firm, unapologetic nonbeliever up until then, although I grew up in a Christian home. I rejected God at about 13 and went my own way. I blamed a lot of that on growing up Christian, but I now know that is wrong and had nothing to do with my rejecting God.

My kids attend public schools, I am in the world, not of the world, and I am raising my daughters to be in the world, not of the world. This works for me. i think it's the way God wants me to lead them, and I look for teaching opportunities. I want them to see the contrast of the worlds way, and God way. Sort of a hands on approach.

I know I'm getting off the topic a little, but I felt the need to explain my methods and approach to daily devotions.

When my kids where younger they loved to hear me read the bible to them. Now we are passed those innocent years somewhat. Topics are becoming more complex, but they still want to hear what God says. I say, this is what the world says, but this is what god says.
