So, I jumped on the bandwagon and started taking fish oil. I thought initially that I'd follow the directions on the back of my vitacost bottle of "mega efa". 2 caps daily.

THEN, I started actually reading about dosing for my issues (eczema and crazy). Much higher. Much, much higher, actually.

I've been trying the higher doses. Thank goodness this stuff is flavored.

Anyway, anybody else out there taking fish oil? What brand(s) do you recommend? I tried finding brand recommendations on line, and the advice varied from "you must take expen$ive fish oil" to "take whatever...just take a lot of it!," so I'm a little confused.

How much y'all take? If you take a larger dose, how do you divide it up, or do you just dose it 1x daily?

Thanks.

That is a very good choice to take fish oil everyday.Fish oil has the following benefits:
1)cancer
2)asthma
3)depression and psychosis
4) heart disease
5) dry skin and dry eye
6)arthritis
7)ADHD
It is important to get the fish oil from small fish like sardines, anchovy because the smaller the fish the less mercury to will take into your system. The bottle of fish oil capsules should tell you what type of fish the oil is from. Also their are brands that are "burbless" that means that you will not have the unwanted side effect of having to burb up that fish taste. You could start with 1000mg/day and then go to 1200/day.

I started taking a fairly massive dose (16+ grams) daily because of some random website that convinced me it might be good for weight loss. My weight is holding steady and I think I may have had some omega-3 deficiency or something, because my skin isn't dry anymore, there's much less rosacea to contend with (the eczema is better, too), and my mood is better. Also, I'm taking an old school depression drug (better for "agitated depression" or something...I dunno...). I was afraid of side effects, especially more weight gain and dry mouth, etc., plus potential cardio effects, and...I'm tolerating it quite well, and my mood is better.

So...yeah...fish oil=awesome.

I suffer from mild seasonal depression. During the winter months, I try to get more omega-3 fatty acids from various sources, such as trout and salmon. I have also sometimes taken omega-3 in pill form. It has helped me lot, although you may need something more.

You call those things benefits? :tongue Oh well if you get all those from fish oil I'd rather not have any. :tongue

On a more serious note, as a vegetarian fish oil is off limits for me. There's plenty of omega-3 fat acid from plant sources, though. I hope the herbal omega-3 acids have the same health benefits.

People should do their research before taking any of these supplements.

For example, some fish oil supplements contain PCBs. PCBs are known to cause cancer.

Flaxseed and Flaxseed oil hinders the absorption of other medications into the body. People with bleeding disorders should not use Flaxseed.

of course.

I'm glad it helps. Do you have a favorite brand?

I don't have any favorite brand. I just buy what is available in the drugstore. I try to get more from food, rather than pills (I take enough of those already for things like epilepsy, gout and high blood pressure).

breathing in the state of California causes cancer. even if its clean air.lol

Usually people who start taking these supplements do so on the advice of someone other than a physician. If someone is taking fish oil supplements to ward off cancer, they might be interested to know that some of those supplements contain chemicals that cause cancer.

If someone is taking prescription medications and decides to add flaxseed or flaxseed oil to their diet, they might like to know that these supplements may block the absorption of their prescription meds into the blood stream.

As you said, just breathing the air can give you cancer. Our options are pretty limited in that respect, but they are not when it comes to what we choose to put into our bodies.

Just something to think about.
