engine oil has pcbs in it.

It's a good thing my vehicle isn't susceptible to cancer.

I googled up some stuff from a shrink who recommends fish oil to everybody, and he had some old data on PCBS, mercury, etc. My brand was on there (vita-cost) and, thankfully, they came out a-OK. What a relief.

I may have to reduce my dose a little bit. There are other ways to lose weight besides stuffing yourself with massive doses of fish oil, lol. I am thankful that my skin is better and the Tofranil seems to be working faster and better and with fewer side effects.

There's a little table. I thought I saw vitacost on there but...I was wrong. Maybe that was another site? Anyway, the good Dr. seems pretty gung ho about fish oil (with meds).
Psych doctors are very positive about fish oil caps because it has some very positive effects on the brain.But for your protection do some research on the brands that have the less PCB.Just make sure that the oil comes from the smaller fish or you will be consuming too much mercury.Ask a pharmacist about your concerns too.

Some time ago I came across the book (I think it was called The Eskimo Diet), and had a read.

This professor of biochemistry at Oxford University went to the Arctic to make measurements on I don't remember what.

While he was there, he decided to take blood samples from the Eskimos/Inuit people, because the profession had been wondering what their cholesterol levels were like, given that they ate mainly fatty foods, like whale blubber, whale blood, seals, walruses fatty fishes etc - everything that was wrong according to current medical dogma at the time.

Also, they never saw a lettuce leaf of any kind!

When he performed the analyses back at the ranch, he was staggered to find that the cholesterol levels were only slightly higher than normal European levels, which was quite a shock.

So he set about finding out what could have caused such low levels of cholesterol.

To cut a long story short, he found that it was the oil in the oily fish that they ate that did the trick. His house stank of fish and seal blubber and I don't know what else, but one finding really interested me.

He found that his blood took an awful long time to clot (when shaving) while he was on the fish oil, or oily fish. In fact he holds (or held) the world record for longest clotting time for normal blood.

So in addition to lowering the cholesterol level, the fish oil acted also as an anticoagulant. For me, who had recently had a heart attack at the time when I read the book, this was pure gold.

If anything could prevent blood clots from forming in my blood and blocking any more coronary vessels, I wanted it, and so, since then (27 years ago) I've been taking a fish oil capsule every day (1000 mg).

I also found out a bit later on, that Vitamin E (which Linus Pauling recommended along with vitamin C) also has quite extraordinary properties as an anticoagulant, but also as a few other very important things. You might like to read it up.

There are 2 books on it by the Shute brothers who ran a highly successful cardiac clinic in Canada, which are truly eye-opening about what it can do. I was glad to hear that it is coming back into fashion, as the medical profession backpedals once more.

Linus Pauling! Part of my Orthomolecular protocol (mostly inspired by Dr.Hoffer) is inspired by Linus Pauling...I take 10 grams of time-release C per day, in 2 equal doses (AM and PM).

You definitely should take E with high dose C. I take 1000 IU, natural form+mixed tocopherols. I have to take it to prevent side effects from my anti-crazy meds.
 
Good to hear that CE. I just wish more people would pay some attention to the man's work on medical matters.

An excellent read is How To Live Longer and Feel Better.

He mentioned that he took 800IU of vitamin E every day, and pointed me to the book I mentioned above by the Shute brothers who ran this mainly cardiac clinic in Canada, and the book contained the results of many years of observations on patients with heart attacks who they treated with Vit E.

Some of the results were startling to me, and probably will be to you as well.

The ones that struck me most forcibly were a. that in the event of a blockage in a coronary artery, a patient who had taken vit E for more than 10 days previously, the collateral circulation around the blockage developed extremely rapidly, thus reducing the amount of damage the clot would do.

b. The second finding was that vit E reduced the muscles' requirement for oxygen, and that again reduced the amount of damage done by the clot.

Apparently the Canadian Olympic team was interested in the findings and tried it out, but I don't know the results.
 
Fish oil is a good source of Omega-3 essential fatty acids. Salmon, mackerel, herring, and sardines are good sources of fish oil because they have a higher fat content and provide more Omega-3 factors than other fishes. For instance, 4 ounces of salmon contains up to 3600 milligrams of Omega-3 fatty acids, while 4 ounces of Cod (a low-fat fish) contains only 300 mg. Carlson Laboratories markets a good Norwegian salmon oil that is highly recommended. Cod liver oil from Norway is the most commonly used fish oil, and is more mild tasting than other varieties. Author Dale Alexander claims it is excellent for arthritis. He has marketed an oil containing 13,800 international units of vitamin A and 1380 IU of vitamin D per tablespoon. But Cod liver oil is not a great source of essential fatty acids. You would have to overdose on vitamins A & D to obtain the amount of essential fatty acids you need. People with diabetes should not take fish oil supplememnts because of the high fat content, but they should consume fish for it's essential fatty acids.

Flaxseeds are rich in Omega-3 essential fatty acids, magnesium, potassium and fiber. They are also a good source of the B vitamins, protein and zinc. They are low in saturated fats and calories, and contain no cholesterol. The nutty taste of ground flaxseeds is good, and they can also be mixed with water or any fruit or vegetable juice. They can also be added to salads, soups, cereal, yogurt, baked goods, or fresh juices. I grind them in my coffee grinder. If you don't want to eat the seeds, you can use flaxseed oil. Like the seeds from which it is extracted, organic cold-pressed flaxseed oil is rich in essential fatty acids. Several studies have shown that it can reduce the pain, inflammation, and swelling of arthritis. It has also been found to lower blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and to help reduce the hardening effects of cholesterol on cell membranes.

Vitamin B-12 is needed to prevent anemia. It aids folic acid in regulating the formation of red blood cells, and helps in the utilization of iron. B-12 is also required for proper digestion, absorption of foods, the synthesis of protein and the metabolism of carbohydrates and fats. It aids in cell formation and cellular longevity. In addition, B-12 prevents nerve damage, maintains fertility, and promotes normal growth and development by maintaining the fatty sheaths that cover and protect nerve endings. B-12 is linked to the production of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that assists memory and learning.
A vitamin B-12 deficiency can be caused by malabsorption, which is most common in elderly people and in those with digestive disorders. Deficiency can cause abnormal gait, chronic fatigue, constipation, depression, digestive disorders, dizziness, drowsiness, enlergment of the liver, eye disorders, hallucinations, headaches, inflammation of the tongue, irritability, labored breathing, memory loss, moodiness, nervousness, neurological damage, palpitations, pernicious anemia, ringing in the ears, and spinal cord degeneration.
Strict vegetarians must remember that they require Vitamin B-12 supplementation, as this vitamin almost exclusively in animal tissues. Although people adopting a strictly vegetarian diet may not see signs of the deficiency for some time-the body can store up to five years worth of Vitamin B-12-signs will eventually develop.
Sources of vitamin B-12 are found in brewers yeast, clams, eggs, herring, kidney, liver, mackerel, milk and dairy products, and seafood. B-12 is not found in many vegetables; it is available only from sea vegetables, such as dulse, kelp, kombu, and nori, oh, and soybeans and soy products. It is also present in the herbs alfalfa, bladdrwrack and hops.

Even though the thread was about fish oil, I included the info on Vitamin B-12 because more than one person mentioned depression and perhaps irritability, major signs of a B-12 deficiency. Most of the time when people get depressed or are irritable, the merely have a deficiency of B-12. Just having a bad day can be as simple as taking some B-12 to fix it. No joke. Plus, with our resident vegetarian in our midst, I thought to mention the B-12 because it is mostly only found in animal tissue as stated. I'd be willing to bet money that many peoples mental difficulties could be more effectively dealt with by the addition of a B-12 supplement in lieu of psyche drugs.
