This is what happens when you take an isolated verse, without comparing Scriptures.

Rom 6:23 states: 'For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord' (ESV). The answer to the first half of the verse, 'the wages of sin is death' is in the second half, 'the free gift of God is eternal life'. So the 'death' spoken of here is not physical death but spiritual death.

What is spiritual death?

Death is separation. A physical death is the separation of the soul from the body. Spiritual death, which is of greater significance, is the separation of the soul from God. In Genesis 2:17, God tells Adam that in the day he eats of the forbidden fruit he will “surely die.” Adam does fall, but his physical death does not occur immediately; God must have had another type of death in mind—spiritual death. This separation from God is exactly what we see in Genesis 3:8. When Adam and Eve heard the voice of the Lord, they “hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God.” The fellowship had been broken. They were spiritually dead (What is spiritual death? GotQuestions?).​

Bick, read about the Final Judgment in Matt 25:21-46 - this is Jesus speaking. There you will discover what happens to those on Jesus' left (unbelievers): “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘You are cursed! Go away from me into the fire that burns forever. It has been prepared for the devil and his angels'" (NIRV).

In this same chapter, Jesus states, “Then they will go away to be punished forever. But those who have done what is right will receive eternal life” (Matt 25:46 NIRV). The fate of unbelievers is being punished forever, while believers receive life eternal.

Your wanting no "eternal punishment in hell" for unbelievers is not a biblical doctrine.

I thought by stating that I agreed with your post, that in itself would be "addressing it".

Since you brought it up, there is a part that I don't agree with, though I agree with your overall point, that there is a punishment that awaits unbelievers in a literal hell.

The context of Matt 25:41-46 states that Jesus was talking about the rewards and punishment for the sheep and goats. Of the goats, he said:

41 ‘Then he will say to those on his left, “Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was ill and in prison and you did not look after me.”

44 ‘They also will answer, “Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or ill or in prison, and did not help you?”

45 ‘He will reply, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.”

46 ‘Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.’​

The 'goats' are the ones 'cursed' and they sent to the place of 'eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels (demons)'. These 'goats' 'will go away to eternal punishment.

So those on Jesus' left hand are not 'disobedient believers' as you maintain, but are the 'cursed' who are punished with the devil and his demons.

I consider that there are degrees of punishment in hell and I'm not convinced it is literal fire as hell also is called a place of darkness.

How does limited atonement line up with 2 Cor 5:19 (NIV): "God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation"?

I don't believe it myself, but for 5-pointers Christ only died for the elect. I'm just wondering if that's where the question is going.

Matthew 25 is the culmination of what will transpire among His servants when He returns, in which the context of how He will deal with His servants begins in Matthew 24:45

Jesus gives the example of a servant who was made ruler over His household, in which one was wise and faithful and the other was foolish and unfaithful.

Both were His servant's that were promoted to be a ruler over His household, in which they were both given the responsibility to distribute provision to His people.

  • One was found to be doing good when He returned and the other was found to be doing evil.
  • One was obedient to the end, the other was obedient for a while, then later became disobedient.

This theme is taught throughout the the Olivet Discourse and is the context of Matthew 25:31-46, which is our subject matter.

A sheep that becomes lost is likened to a sinner, that must repent or remain lost.


Lost = Sinner who is need of repentance; dead to God, in need of salvation, reconciliation to God.
Found = Someone is is reconciled to God; saved.

I will break it down for you.


  • Who is Jesus teaching?
Answer: His disciples privately.

Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, Matthew 24:3a

  • What is the context of His teaching?
Answer: The coming of the Lord, and the end of the age: The Day of Judgement.

“Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?” Matthew 24:3b


When Jesus comes on that Day the tares will be destroyed.

the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are the angels. Therefore as the tares are gathered and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of this age.


37 He answered and said to them: “He who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. 38 The field is the world, the good seeds are the sons of the kingdom, but the tares are the sons of the wicked one. 39 The enemy who sowed them is the devil, the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are the angels. 40 Therefore as the tares are gathered and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of this age. 41 The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who practice lawlessness, 42 and will cast them into the furnace of fire. The only ones standing before the throne, on the Day of Judgement is wheat, not tares.

Wheat = His people, His servants
Tares = sons of the wicked one

One was faithful, the other was not faithful.

The faithful one was rewarded.
The unfaithful one was sent to hell.

Likewise, Jesus shows us exactly how it will be on the Day of Judgement, when we all must appear before Him, to give account for what we did.

9 Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.

Here is a look at that Day - He just finished teaching us that His servants who were faithful, were rewarded, and His servants who were unfaithful and unproductive were sent to hell.

[BECAUSE]for I was hungry and you gave Me food;
I was thirsty and you gave Me drink;
I was a stranger and you took Me in;
I was naked and you clothed Me;
I was sick and you visited Me;
I was in prison and you came to Me.’

The reason these inherited the kingdom was BECAUSE:

I was hungry and you gave Me food;
I was thirsty and you gave Me drink;
I was a stranger and you took Me in;
I was naked and you clothed Me;
I was sick and you visited Me;
I was in prison and you came to Me.’

Just like His servants who were faithful with what the Lord gave them, in the parable, these also used what the Lord gave them to love and serve Him, by loving and serving His people.



37 “Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? 38 When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? 39 Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ 40 And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did itto one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’

41 “Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels:42 for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; 43 I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’

44 “Then they also will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?’ 45 Then He will answer them, saying, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ 46 And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

Just like the the Lord's servant who did nothing with what the Lord gave him, these also did nothing.

From what I've read Jesus died for those whom God calls to be saved under the blood of Christ's sacrifice. Not Calvinism nor Universalism but God's election as he calls whom he will to his grace. It is God that saves. We do nothing to save ourselves.

All men are called to be saved.

The context for Matthew 24:31-46 begins in Matthew 24:45 whereby Jesus teaches several scenario's about His people, His servant's and what He entrusted them with, and how each will be rewarded or punished at His coming.

The Text says some were wicked servants and some faithful servants. Some are goats and some are sheep. Goats are placed on the left and sheep are placed on the right.
Yet your claim (still unsubstantiated) was/is, His sheep are placed on the left.

Yes. Where is the one who was a faithful (sheep) who somehow became wicked and turned into a goat in this story?
