Genesis 19:5-8 (KJV) And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.
And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him,
And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly.

  1. Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof. Bit hard to swallow this, but the Bible is inerrant. Still though, isn't it immoral to just offer up your daughters like property? Could someone explain?

I do believe this is one of those great faith stories, like Abraham being told to offer up his only son as a sacrifice. Lot knew these were Angels, messengers from God. He was trying to protect them from the crowd...even at the cost of giving up his daughters. But God meant that much to Lot. Lot must've also knew that any suffering here on earth is not comparable to the glory and goodness that awaits us in heaven, in the future.
The Angels were obviously able to take care of themselves, lol. Lot may have not known that so felt the need to do something, anything.

Fair enough that makes sense when taken into account with the Abraham parallel. Thanks!

You sure did pick a good one.... :)

Ed just might be on to something there. I guess I have honestly never contemplated it before.

I think as you read through your going to run into a lot of passages like this that will make you scratch your head. Sometimes we just have to understand the event took place, but not understand why.

Here is a verse you'll get to later on -

Deuteronomy 29:29
"The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law."

I really don't like to proof text, but this verse was written in regards to something that was going to happen - but the people would not understand.

So I think we can also use this verse in understanding that God wrote some things we just don't understand - but He recorded them for a reason.

Who knows, one of these days He may show you just what Lot was thinking. :)

Genesis 19:8 (wisdom from the lukewarm Believer is always flawed, as is evidenced here)

The Holy Spirit compares Jude 6-7 and Genesis 19:5-8:

Jude 6-7 King James Version (KJV)
And the Angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation (these particular Angels did not maintain their original position in which they were created, but transgressed those limits to invade territory foreign to them, namely the human race; they left Heaven and came to Earth, seeking to cohabit with women, which they did [ Gen. 6:14]), He (the Lord) has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day (these Angels are now imprisoned [2 Peter 2:4], and will be judged at the Great White Throne Judgment, then placed in the "Lake of Fire" where they will remain forever and forever [Rev. 20:10]).

7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner (the Greek Text introduces a comparison showing a likeness between the Angels of Verse 6 and the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah; but the likeness between them lies deeper than the fact that both were guilty of committing sin; it extends to the fact that both were guilty of the same identical sin), giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh (the Angels cohabited with women; the sin of Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them, was homosexuality [Romans 1:27]), are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire (those who engage in the sin of homosexuality and refuse to repent will suffer the vengeance of the Lake of Fire).

I have always shuddered at Lot's willingness to send out his Daughters to that homosexual crowd. That was sinful, very sinful!! Lot lived in a sin saturated land, and had no righteous folk to show the right way.

Thank God that He interceded, and His grace saved the situation.

We read the bible often from our view not the cultural context. Here have sex with these men? Must be my time in Afghanistan where I noticed things.

How about Moses and aaron sons of incest?

It would be a greater sin in that culture to give up the men whom you took into your house as guests. It would be the host's responsibility to defend them even to his death.
That culture has survived to this day. (Ref: Movie "Sole Survivor") It is reflected in today's Muslim culture by the manner in which women are treated.
