China. Chinese biologists have learned how to breed pandas in captivity. It's a concern, because they don't have enough connected preserves at this time to prevent extinction. The Chinese government is working to connect the existing preserves with corridors of bamboo forest to allow them to move to new areas when the bamboo periodically dies off in each isolated preserve.
So for the time being, they need to breed in captivity to maintain genetic diversity. China is smarting from the recent extinction of the river dolphin, and the government of China seems to be truly interested in keeping as much of the unique fauna of China alive.
