Could someone explain this passage to me? It appears harsh to me. Perhaps the context of what is going on would be helpful. Thanks!

And I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they shall go in after them, and I will get glory over Pharaoh and all his host, his chariots, and his horsemen. (Exodus 14:17)

.
That is indeed a sad commentary on the fickleness of human nature. For example; a co-worker of mine where I used to work was in trouble for insubordination. When I asked him why he didn't just simply comply with our boss' wishes he replied: It was the way he said it.

In other words; God apparently abandoned Dale Carnegie's instructions in the popular book "How To Win Friends And Influence People" and instead deliberately chafed Pharaoh to the point where he became obstinate enough to forget about the recent miracles and catastrophes that befell his country and chase Yhvh's people into the Red Sea.

It's pretty frightful to think that there are times when the Bible's God deliberately takes advantage of the fickleness of human nature in order to bring out the worst in people and get them to suppress their better judgment so they'll voluntarily walk straight into the canon's mouth.

(see if this helps? )
Elijah here with a few verses that most will find interesting. We find that God allows for evil 'spirits' to work against His Truth & takes the 'blame' for it because He allowed it to happen. I often think of the miracles that satan & his 'henchman' will work at this last setting of time just before the Second Coming of Christ. One of the verses of Matt. 24 has always been one hard for me to find taking place. That of Matt. 24

[21] For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.(OK: This should settle it for any one that is elect! And also for anyone that teaches an opposite lie.)

[
22] And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened. (In other Words there will not be an Eccl.3:15 REPEAT of time as seen from the Matt. 25 Midnight CRY to the Loud Cry of 70 AD's slaughter. Because Christ + Paul told us that the time would be 'cut short')

[
23] Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not.
(Again: these are men who will be active in deception. Gen. 4:7 ones & the ones of 1 Kings 22 below. They are not 'just' the average run of the mill ones. But will be seen in time to use all of the devils power of deception as the next verse of Christ's warn us about! )

[
24] For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.
(The 'very elect' + GREAT SIGNS & WONDERS! Are you ready for this? We are seeing right now the winding down of Matt. 24 and Christ Second coming shortly to be! We see satans agents with the preterist false teaching that Christ is here today. Note His next verse!)

[
25] Behold, I have told you before.
[
26] Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. ...

(And what you are being told is that he is 'IN' these ones doing the deception work! This verse could be NO plain! Ask yourself when God allows these evil men to do the work of Rev. 16:13-14 + 2 Thess. 2:7-12 what kind of test will that be to you if you needed physical healing?? 2 Thess. 7 says..

[7] For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.
[8] And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:
[9] Even him,
whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,
[10] And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
[11] And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

(OK: Back to the Documentation of Christ in Matt.! and HIS FACTS!)
[27] For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
(It could be NO more Plain than that of the above verse it seems, huh? Those are the WORD'S OF CHRIST! But, remember verse 11 above! 'Strong delusion' + 'BELIEVE A LIE'? And that is not the Very Elect is true! But what very elect one would set by & watch the devil & his agents teach that they that Christ is already here on earth today, and [IN THEM] teaching this stuff? And the next verses find that even this is IN GODS FOREKNOWLEDGE and He has allowed these ones to make their FATAL DESIRED FREE WILL CHOICE!)

1 Kings 22
[17] And he said, I saw all Israel scattered upon the hills, as sheep that have not a shepherd: and the LORD said, These have no master: let them return every man to his house in peace.

[18] And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat, Did I not tell thee that he would prophesy no good concerning me, but evil?

[19] And he said, Hear thou therefore the word of the LORD: I saw the LORD sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing by him on his right hand and on his left.

[20] And the LORD said, Who shall persuade Ahab, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-gilead? And one said on this manner, and another said on that manner.

[21] And there came forth 'a spirit', and stood before the LORD, and said, I will persuade him. (Isaiah 14:12-14 I,I,I,I,I.)

[22] And the LORD said unto him, Wherewith? And he said, I will go forth, and I will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said, Thou shalt persuade him, and prevail also: go forth, and do so.

[23] Now therefore, behold, the LORD hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these thy prophets, and the LORD hath spoken evil concerning thee.
(And surely one sees this documented again in Inspiration & are the Godheads very Own Words of Rev. 17:5's 'THE ABOMINATION OF THE EARTH' with the compiler's own caps it seems. And this mean that these ones also are deceived & are being used of lieing spirits.)

It's actually a judgment from God for afflicting strangers in their land.

(Gen 15:13-14) Then He said to Abram: "Know certainly that your descendants will be strangers in a land [that is] not theirs, and will serve them, and they will afflict them four hundred years. And also the nation whom they serve I will judge; afterward they shall come out with great possessions.
