You should take up geocaching; Jill will always land you in the best parking spot before you head off on foot.

I don't know what geocaching is :erm

Gee Kathi. In this age of Internet, you could have googled it.

Someone hides something, and a person is given the latitude and longitude coordinates of the object. GPS's are only accurate to within a few feet, so while your GPS gets you in the general area, you have to specifically find what they hid. It's high-tech hide and seek.

So do we start calling you Jack, now? :lol
Jack and Jill went up the hill
to fetch the geocache
Jack was lost but Jill online
led them to some neat toys in the cache...:lol

It doesn't rhyme. but it's the coffee's fault. Too weak I guess, lol.

A geocache is, loosely speaking, a treasure hunt. there are quite a few buried caches all over America. it's just a small box or something which is buried somewhere and will contain some small outdoorsy type stuff. I'm not sure how you find the locations of them, they probably list them somewhere online, and it will probably have GPS coordinates telling you where it is. they way they work is go find it, and if you need anything that is in it, then you take it, but you're supposed to leave something in it also which may help someone else. A lighter, matches, that old small knife that's been in your junk drawer forever, an extra map of the area, flashlight or batteries, a can of food, whatever. It's like pass it on. Take a little, give a little. It's fun to do and can be helpful on your expedition/camping trip, whatever. I found one accidentally one time and told my friend about it, who explained the whole thing to me.

I had no clue about it and was tempted to take it all, but i figured that someone buried the stuff and knew where it was and the stuff while not particularly valuable but of a nature that it would be very helpful to someone to come for and use while outdoors so I buried it again. it sort of felt like I found some buried treasure in a way. it was cool. :biggrin2

:lol That sounds like a fun game.

How often should I update my maps on my GPS?
Every six months to a year should be good. Roads don't change all that often.

By the way, it is kind of hard to put the wrong address in as the garmin will autocomplete many of them for you.

I did run into a problem recently where mine was not able to find a couple addresses. In that case I just googlemapped it.

This generally only happens when dealing with smaller roads out in the county.

Who knows how often they update it? A good time to try I think would be right before you go on an outing. :)

As for updating, it will tell you when it's about a year old. HOWEVER, most GPS's are outdated on the shelf and an update gets done right away. Most only allow one update unless you subscribe to an update map contract. Since GPS's are cheap, I never thought it was worth it since the map update is comparable in price. Most roads don't change that often.

BTW, don't confuse a MAP update with an unlimited app update. The latter takes care of software issues, the former is actual map data and it's that which they give you one update.

I beg to differ. I know my town well and I have seen the gps be way off. mine was it tried to tell me to cross the tracks the blue is what the thing tried to tell me. the black with the blue is where the road was at one time. that info is so old that It was that way prior to the late 70's. There is a difference because my GPS was giving me some very strange directions since some of our streets have changed in the last couple of years.I took quite a while to update the maps.
