'We Hold These Truths...'


The great British intellectual G. K. Chesterton wrote that “America is the only nation in the world that is founded on [a] creed.â€Â

Think about that for a moment. Other nations were founded on the basis of race, or by the power of kings or emperors who accumulated lands and the peasants who inhabited those lands.

But America wasâ€â€and is to this dayâ€â€different. It was founded on a shared belief. Or, as Chesterton said, on a creed.

And what is that creed that sets us apart? It is the eloquent, profound, and simple statement penned by Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.â€Â

I’ll never forget when I graduated from Brown University during the Korean War. I couldn’t wait to become a Marine officer, to give my life if necessary, to defend that creed. To defend the idea that our rights come from God Himself and are not subject to whims of governments or tyrants. That humans ought to be free to pursue their most treasured hopes and aspirations.

Perhaps some 230 years later, we take these words for granted. But in 1776, they were earth-shakingâ€â€indeed, revolutionary.

Yet today, they are in danger of being forgotten altogether. According to Gallup, 66 percent of American adults have no idea that the words, “We hold these truths . . .†come from the Declaration of Independence. Even worse, only 45 percent of college seniors know that the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are proclaimed in the Declaration.

As America grows more and more diverse culturally, religiously, ethnically, it is critical that we re-embrace the American creed.

America has always been a “melting pot.†But what is the pot that holds our multicultural stew together? Chesterton said the pot’s “original shape was traced on the lines of Jeffersonian democracy.†A democracy founded on those self-evident truths expressed in the Declaration of Independence. And as Chesterton remarked, “The pot must not melt.â€Â

Abraham Lincoln understood this so very well. For him, the notion that all men are created equal was “the electric cord in that Declaration that links the hearts of patriotic and liberty-loving men together, that will link those patriotic hearts as long as the love of freedom exists in the minds of men throughout the world.â€Â

So tomorrow, go to the Fourth of July parade. Go to the neighborhood barbecue and enjoy the hot dogs and apple pie.

But here’s an idea for you. Why not take time out at the picnic to read the Declaration of Independence aloud with your friends and your neighbors.


Listenâ€â€and thrillâ€â€to those words that bind us together as a nation of freedom-loving people: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

These are the words Americans live for and, if necessary, die for.

LOL, if it's any consolation, history has shown that the US and Great Brittan still "love" each other. Hey remember WWII? You'd be eating Bratwurst and drinking Hofbrau and Lowenbrau beer if it weren't for the US. ;) ;)

Hey~ what about Isreal? Thier nation was founded on faith in the LORD and the covenants of God. Isn't that something to praise the Lord for too? ? ? :bounce

Ooooo! Ahhhhh!

I am just like a little kid when it comes to fireworks... cannot wait to sit down tonight with my little grandsons and cuddle at least them while we watch and Ooooo and Ahhhhh together. :biggrin

I have three grandsons that are five and under, so there is a fiar chance that I will get one to sit with me. . . :thumb My teen grandkids are in Washington DC tonight, vacationing with my daughter and her hubby. I have been watching the news, which I rarely do these days just because they are out there right now. :crazy God is GOOD... and I trust Him to protect them and keep them according to His will.

May our Lord BLESS you Handy, and Vic, and Tim and Caroline , and JoJo, and Dave, and GojuBrian, and relentk, and Jason and wife, and Sparrowhawk, and ALL England too! :bounce

My July 4th had its high points and low points. My plans were to grill burgers and hot dogs, then eat, then go see fireworks with the kiddos and my sister and her husband. But.....

Severe thunderstorms hit our area pretty hard and so I was dashing in and out of the house in the rain and thunder and lightning to flip burgers. I wasn't freaking out if they called off the fireworks (which they did until next Friday) but I did not want to give up my burgers!!

So I got my burgers. And the highlight of the evening was that I spent it with my sister and brother-in-law (who happens to be from England :tongue2) and I beat him at Trivial Pursuit. I had no idea I was so smart! :lol

, unfortunalelty i had to fix my truck and it's done but working 90+ degree weather wore me out, so no fireworks for me, my poor dog is scared of thunder,fireworks,so i had to hold it or comfort it and it is a 70 llb dog, poor dog, but its my child.

Awwww, sweet little doggie! (well not little lol) I've known several dogs that were scared to death of loud noises such as thunder, motorcycles, etc. I'm glad your doggie has you to comfort him. :yes

she , i will post a picture of her, once i figure out how to attach here, this site has a size limit,
even now she's near me on the floor, it got bad for her she was shaking at first, during the early part of the fireworks.
