I haven't prayed or read my bible in Awhile (Obviously I've prayed about certain things over the months but I'm talking about a daily prayer) and to be honest I don't see anything wrong with that. I mean I haven't really had a conviction from God about it so I don't see why It's a problem. Don't get me wrong I love God and everything and I'm not saying the bible is a bad thing or anything like that, I just don't read it. So whats your guys thoughts?

Well, I'm not going to tell you what to do but think of it like this; prayer is a special gift that God gives us in order to have a connection and a relationship with Him. Whenever we are having problems in our lives He wants to be there for us to comfort us and make us feel better, and just like any Father does, He also likes hearing from us in general for the things that bring us joy and we feel happy and blessed about. As for reading the Bible, take a look at it like this, think of it as a study guide that you use in school, but instead it's a guide for how you're supposed to live your life. And just like anything else in life, you'll never learn anything unless you read and study it in the first place. :readbible Just my thoughts and opinions on it. I read the Bible a bit every night so I don't overload my brain lol, but you would be amazed with how much I learned already just by doing it. :)

I've had times like that Brock. The danger is that you get further away from God. I can cope better when I have prayed and read the bible.

When I have felt like you are now I tried to read just one verse, and then think about it afterwards. Often after reading one verse I want to carry on reading.

I don't want to grow away from God, He is the only one who understands me.

Try one verse and see how you go.

The way I figure it, scripture says that He will speak to us through his Word, and this He does do, even for beginners, the more advance mature Christians with pure hearts, He promises to manifest Himself to them! (Wouldn't that be kewl?!) He also tells us in scripture to pray without ceasing...and that struck me as particularly significant, without ceasing! It is a hot line to the throne room of God. I have used it, and it's an open line! I was immediately answered Brother!

A couple times I have asked God something in prayer, and not received an answer...but then he "pointed me to" the scripture and there was my answer. I was thinking about all this stuff and the scripture says that one day we will give account for our lives to God.
Romans 14:12
12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.../

And it made me think about that day, and what happens if He asks me if I ever read His word even once all the way through?...I had not at the time, but I've read it through several times since then, lol. I don't want to have to stand there in front of everyone and say, uh no I didn't read it...I think that would be embarrassing.

As for prayer every day? Well, I am just a man like you and the others, so I have had times of every day and not missing prayer....and also days or weeks where I did not pray every day first thing in the morning...and it's very plain to see that life goes better with daily prayer every morning. For a long time my forehead was on the floor as soon as I rolled out of bed...that always leads to good days in the Lord.

So now I try to pray unceasingly and speak to Jesus as if He is hanging out with me, I invite Him to go to work with me, to the store, and like that. Some people, the Lord will say I never knew you to them...and I don't want the Lord to ever say that to me, so Prayer is where I talk to Him...and reading His word is where He talks to me...so how could He say I never knew you to me?

I want them to know me in Heaven. I want to be on a first name basis with the Saints. That's what I think and nothing more.

Brilliant post Edward. I agree with it all.

For 300 years Christians didnt have a bible, and only the jews would have had the Tanakh. So many gentile Christians didnt have any scripture. But a few would have heard Pauls letters when he wrote them to different christian congregations.

While the Church never had the full collection of books we know as the NT until Constantine wanted to codify everything, those books were picked exclusively from books that were used in Liturgy; i.e., Church services. So no Christian was ever entirely without "the Bible." (Revelation is the only exception to this)

One of the early justifications for public schools was so that people could learn to read, study the Bible, and get saved.

The list of people who signed our founding documents is absolutely incredible with respect to the advances they made along these lines ...
the originator of Sunday school, the American Bible society, Webster's dictionary, etc

God has never stopped communicating with his people. Every breath you take and everything you do when a Christian sends a message to God because his holy spirit is inside you. Your thoughts, your words, all are a manner of prayer.

Once upon a time, they used to teach children to read from the Bible, and even memorize Scripture verses.

Unfortunately, the public school system has substantially been taken over by anti Bible people who teach children to ignore the Bible. At this point, the public school system is leading the country in the opposite direction. In many districts, each succeeding generation trained up by the public school system is moving further from the truth.

The owners manual for a man, they wont let it be taught in school. It has the instructions for life in it! But it's not a Conspiracy nothing to see here move along move along...Who gave the CIA the responsibility to print the textbooks anyway? They're fired.

Yeah but what's that got to do with you Brother? :wink

I was just explaining that many christians never read a bible and the Gospel is not just reading a book of text. Many heard by word of mouth alone. I don't see the bible as a need to know the Gospel and be saved. The bible is historical accounts and records. Its good for teachers, pastors, and scholars.

Because many christians believe if you don't read the bible your doomed.
