I don't know what it is, but every single time I go into the pm/messages my computer will pop up right next "Windows Internet Exployer provided by Yahoo" (computer not responding) and there I go having to close out the window again. What is it? This stupid ("computer not responding") stuff when I go to pm's.

You're using IE version 7. It's crap. I know you have this because the Yahoo! branding inbuilt into the distro. There is obviously a conflict with your system which is why it crashes when you try to do certain things. I suggest one of two things.

1. Get Firefox: http://www.getfirefox.com
2. Revert to Internet Explorer version 6.

========
How?

1. Click Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs.
2. In this window, click "show updates at the top" checkbox.
3. Scroll through the list until you find "Windows Internet Explorer 7" and click on it (highlight).
4. Click the "remove" option.
5. Restart your computer.

I get the same thing, only it doesn't matter where I am in the web site! Everything locks up on me and I have to ctrl alt del to close out the window and then get back on the web site and hope it works the next time. And most of the time it happens again! I'm so frustrated with this place anymore becuase If I want to make a posting or answer a pm I get nothing but problems like that. It's been happening more so ever since the "ads" were added to the web site and all new upgrades since greg took over the site. And i thought is was my computer. Although there are some sites I can't get onto becuase there are just too many graphics loading up and that's what jams my computer to where I have to either get out of the site altogether because it takes forever to load the stuff, or I havea lock up and I have to do that frustrating routine over and over again. Plenty of times I can't get back to answering or posting because it happens all too frequently. And it seems when traffic is not heavy here late at night, I don't have so much locking up of the window with that no responding message. Frustrating, very frustrating it's been for far too long. I'm still on broadband hook up. I wonder if that has a lot to do with it. Some people tell me that's it. And my computer is too outdated. :sad Seems like I'm just too much behind the times... Even the guys I've been dating lately are picky as to the material belongings I have, as being not good enough. :gah Gotta get with the material world and keep up with it! :bigfrown I'm about ready to just give up on this whole techno-world! That is, until I can get with it! Kinda like our great great grandparents not wanting to go from horse & buggy to motorized vehicle! The changin times... being caught in the middle of it! aaarrrgh! Now everyone has to have a big screen tv too. New this, new that. Lord have mercy.

I'm about ready to find that duck
with the sledge hammer
and be done with it all!

Yes there are annoying problems with this website, but that is not the cause of your problem. IE 7 is buggy (due to Microsoft's lack of beta testing) and that is the cause of your problem. Please see my previous post in this thread.

No. Test it if you like. Go and get another browser and see if it still happens. I can tell you right now you will not have the problems.

They're wrong.

.

I am using Internet windows version 6. It makes no difference with the locking up stuff.

And why would you tell Carol to remove a program without first having the firefox in a file ready to install after she deleted the interent windows? And I wouldn't tell anyone to delete something without telling them to first have a back up of the program they are about to delete.

I'm confused withwhat you are telling here to do. If you remove your internet windows, you don't have an internet browser. She would have to have one ready and waiting to be installed right after she deleted the IE v.6.... Am I mistaken? :confused

Also I'm on broadband still. that slows things down quite a bit. When sites have too many graphics to load my computer goes very slow. I've even gone to the extent to pause my taks sheduler and shut down my virus scan programs. nothing works except to get on this forum when the traffic is very thin and hope someone else isn't posting at the same time I am and hope I'm not getting any email coming in at the same time. it's just a big jam up!

Don't know if I want firefox after all these years of using IE.6 I'm afraid I wouldn't know what to do with it. or if my computer would be able to handle it. What are the system requirements for fire fox? and how much space does it take up my computer space is being eaten up by some bug I can't find. I have to keep deleting my temp files and can't keep much of anything stored on it. Can't find the culprit.

But that's another story. Back to Carol's problem.

Yes you are, but that's fine. Since Windows XP, Internet Explorer has been integrated into the Operating System. What this means is that you cannot actually remove IE from Windows (even if you go to add/remove Programs and 'uninstall' it - it just removes it from the list).

Since IE7 is an upgrade (ie. it was not packaged with any Windows distro) users must upgrade to it. Therefore, removing it (uninstall) will only rollback IE to the previous version you had installed (IE6)

Do you mean dialup? Dialup is limited to 56k but broadband is quite fast.

What kind of computer do you have? How much RAM? Speed?

System requirements for windows users here.

Are you talking about memory (RAM), virtual memory or hard drive space? Download is ~10mb and installed it's about 20mb. It shouldn't slow your computer down unless you have heaps of addons installed. I have over 30 addons installed and it runs fine - although I am using Linux with 2gb RAM & 2gb swap (virtual memory).

I use Firefox and Chrome - no problems and they're wicked fast.

Have you tried deleting your messages Carol, sometimes we let them build
up, or maybe its Malware or a Virus, try deleting your messages first. :yes

I don't think too many messages is the problem. I would think it is more likely a browser problem or other site bug.

I use Firefox too ( :) ), but I always thought Internet Explorer 6 and below were the crazy versions. I didn't know Internet Explorer 7 was the same way. I have Internet Explorer 8 on my Windows XP systems, and I only use that when I wanna look something up quickly, and don't wanna open up Firefox (and have it load all thirteen tabs that I keep open). :lol Of course, if Internet Explorer 8 is as bad as the older versions, maybe I haven't used it enough to get problems like those myself...

And, like Sanitarium asked, how much memory does your computer have, and how fast is it? I've noticed that older computers seem to go slower with stuff like that. If you have Windows XP, click the Start button, then right-click on My Computer and click "Properties" on the menu that comes up. If you have Windows 2000 or some version before that, minimize everything so you can see the desktop, and then right-click on My Computer and click "Properties" on the menu that comes up. No matter how you do it, a window should pop up, and on the bottom-right corner, it should say something like:

Intel(R)
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20GHz
3.20GHz, 504 MB of RAM

(That's actually my main system's CPU and memory)

What does it say on the bottom-right corner of that window on your computer? (For Carol or Relic)

I'm also looking at this from a web coding point of view - IE hasn't changed a bit. Everything else has improved, this is becasue of Microsoft's obvious lack of market research (or lack of acting on the results from market research) and failing to comply with W3C's standards! :mad

I keep a lot of tabs open as well (my record is 25) so I really need a quick browser, FF and Chrome offer this. I really like the web developer toolbar on FF. Chrome's one isn't as good, but at least it has it.

Nice processor, but you might want more RAM. My new laptop has 4GB ram, 4 CPU 2.4 GHz, 1440x900 17" widescreen, vista business. it's awesome!

So in answer to the OP, I would suggest checking out your computer's specs. A good way to do it is to go into START, then click RUN. Type in (without the quotes) "dxdiag". Then save it and attach the text file or post it here and we can check it out. The only page we'll need to see is the first one.

.

My (rinky dink) Specs.... :bigfrown

Microsoft Windows 98 4.10.1998
256.0MB RAM

I know my brother installed a Pentium II it to upgrade it a while back.
I know I have 2G of RAM since the upgrade, somplace, that stuff is just not showing up, I don't know where to get those specs. I probably have to reboot and read off the first window that comes up. I really don't want to reboot right now....
So I don't know what's really going on with my computer. It's so old and so tinkered with. and it's so messed up...

I should get a new computer but.... finances are not in yet. I'm still looking for that item on the wish list to come to fruition.

Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6

And yeah, it's a dial up connection, not broadband. Sorry, I goofed on that one. :oops

I used to be into the tech part of computers but it all got so complicated about every month or so something new came out and it just changed so fast I lost interest in keeping up. I evern left off with continuing to learn the assorted program languages when Html changed and added the X to the end of it, and when flash came out . That's how far behind the times I am with this stuff. I know just enough to get by and not enough to keep up.

What happened to Carol? She hasn't been on board since her problem with locking up.
:-(
