G'day all,

As a former commercial radio DJ in the 60s and 70s, I've volunteered to be a DJ for a local community radio station for 2 hours a week of gospel music and talk.

I'm looking for some good country gospel music. I have songs from the past from Jim Reeves, Johnny Cash, Hal Kennedy (and the Dixie Echoes), Alan Jackson, Colin Buchanan (an Aussie), Statler Brothers, Gaithers, and some other Gospel quartets.

Which other country gospel singers, either secular or 'Christian', could you recommend? A link to YouTube would be helpful for me to listen to them.

Thank you for your help in advance.

Sincerely,

Oz

Bluegrass counts as country music right? Alison Krauss has some great songs about faith.

LiF,

Bluegrass certainly is among country music's genre. Thank you for suggesting Alison Krauss. She will fit in perfectly with my programme. Now I've thought of some other artists:

Tony Rice and Ricky Skaggs, The Soul of Man Never Dies.
The Purple Hulls, Higher Ground.
Willie Nelson, Just As I Am.
Carrie Underwood, How Great Thou Art.
Loretta Lynn, Ten Thousand Angels.
The Statler Brothers, Daddy Sang Bass.
Flatt & Scruggs, Be Ready, for Tomorrow May Never Come.

Lisa, your reminder got this old brain a movin' in a different direction.

elvis presley also did some gospel - don't know if it would be considered country

he has entire gospel albums he recorded

they say that when not on stage doing shows he and his band would sing gospel for hours - presley loved it that much

dolly parton does "a coat of many colors"

i think it's kenny rogers that does "man from galilee"

grand ole opry has kris kristofferson and others who do country gospel

i think kris kristofferson wrote "one day at a time sweet Jesus" in the stage wings in 15min and performed it when he came on stage

Thanks Truthfrees,

This is the Merle Haggard version of One Day at a Time. It was written by Marijohn Wilkin and Kris Kristofferson and Marilyn Sellars had the first hit version in 1974.

Would you believe that song has been recorded by approx. 200 artists?

I remember as a DJ playing Elvis with his backing group, The Jordanaires. Here they sing, Don't. This was Elvis and the Jordanaires first gospel recording in 1957, Peace in the Valley.

In the article about the Jordanaires on Wikipedia, it gives this background:

The Jordanaires were an American vocal quartet that formed as a gospel group in 1948. They are known for providing background vocals for Elvis Presley, in live appearances and recordings from 1956 to 1972. The group has also worked in the recording studio, on stage, and on television with many other country and rock and roll artists (Wikipedia 2018. s.v. Jordanaires).

They provided backing vocals for many Patsy Cline songs, some early Johnny Cash recordings on Sun Records, and other vocalists. Here the Jordanaires sing, Power in the Blood.

Thank you so much for your excellent suggestions.

A late breakfast is calling.

thanks for all the background info - it is very interesting

Have you ever heard of New Legacy Project? My wife and I saw them live a few weeks ago and really enjoyed them. They have a YouTube page.
They are more gospel than country. But here is one that's old school gospel country you may like.

wow - you know your stuff - it shows that you love music - it's contagious to be around music lovers

thanks for all the background info - it is very interesting

i wonder if any country gospel singer does amazing grace - i love that song

and how great thou art

and i'll fly away - give me that old time religion

don't know if they would be classified as gospel country - actually i think the gaithers and friends do a lot of these

breakfast? - best answer that call - God bless you my friend

Truth,

I really enjoy country and middle of the road (Andy Williams, Frank Sinatra, Matt Monro, Julie Andrews, Barbara Streisand, Al Martino, Dean Martin, etc) music..

Here's country artist, Alan Jackson's, Amazing Grace.

Loretta Lynn (who suffered a severe stroke) and Patsy Cline sing, How Great Thou Art.

Johnny Cash and lots of his friends sing, Give Me That Old Time Religion.

I guess I should add my very favourite country singer, the late Jim Reeves singing, I'll Fly Away. Jim was pilot of a Beechcraft light plain and his passenger was pianist, Dean Manuel. Both were killed in 1964 when Jim was aged 40. Dean was 30.

Thanks Tessa,

I have those songs on his vinyl LP, 'We Thank Thee'. He also has some Christian songs on 'The Twelve Songs of Christmas', including Silent Night.

All of the folks in this thread are providing me with lots of suggestions for great country gospel songs.
