I can't find any evidence in the Bible that states the earth and universe are ca. 6,000 years old or millions of years old. A young earth is a deduction that some have made like Answers in Genesis and Creation Ministries International and others. An old earth is a deduction, based on biblical and scientific evidence.

There are some leading evangelical theologians and apologists who believe in an old earth. See:

    And Job:
Did you know this from of old, since the setting of the human being on earth, that the rejoicing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the godless lasts only a moment ?
    https://www.biblegateway.com/passage?search=Job 20:4-5&version=LEB

The setting of human being on Earth is from "old".

    And David:

The earth is Yahweh’s, with its fullness, the world and those who live in it, because he has founded it on the seas, and has established it on the rivers. ...
Lift up your heads, O gates, and lift up, O ancient doorways, that the king of glory may enter.

    https://www.biblegateway.com/passage?search=Psalm 24:1-2,9&version=LEB

The doorways of the Earth's seas and rivers are "ancient".

Have you ever played that childhood game where someone whispers something in your ear and you pass it on to the next person beside you and by the time it gets to the last person in line it’s altogether different then what was originally said? This is the same way in many Churches as how the word of God is being taught. The word was spoken by God for what he has already said and by the time it reaches our ears we are hearing something totally different then what he spoke in the first place. Has this become the deception we now find in religion with each one teaching a different gospel then that of the original?

Many people love to dictate to you what you can and cannot do according to what they have been taught through mans doctrines and carnal interpretations and this only brings one into a deceptive bondage that can damage our very soul and cause us to fall away from God because we cannot meet the standards of the church to be that perfect person they say we need to be before we can even accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior and not only before, but even after.

Many churches go as far as shutting the doors on those who do not meet their criteria as they deem certain people as unworthy of God and misfits of society that need to clean themselves up first before they can come to church as they would be a bad influence on the youth of the church. I would say let the youth of the church be a good influence on those who need Jesus in their lives as Jesus said to come as you are and he will change anything that needs changing beginning with the condition of our hearts.

Satan has such a foothold on religion by using those unaware to teach his twisted word as Satan knows this word better than we ever could. Those who lack the knowledge of truth will perish along with the deceptive word they teach. Our English language produces many different definitions for a singular word that has caused a misinterpretation from the teachings of the original manuscripts that were written by the Disciples of Christ. The carnal mind can not perceive the teachings of the Holy Spirit and if we are not allowing the Holy Spirit to teach us then we will fall prey to those deceptions and be devoured by the wicked on who seeks to destroy our faith.

So, Papa, which view do you follow?
    1. The Bible teaches the age of the earth/universe is ca. 6,000 years, or
    2. The Bible teaches the age of the earth/universe is millions of years.

    chessman,

Could 6,000 years old be regarded as ancient? :?

When was the Book of Job written? Some say it was pre-Mosaic while others estimate between 4th and 7th centuries BC. If 7th century BC, that would make it ca. 9,000 years old in 2017. So, how could the earth be 6,000 years old if Job was there 9 centuries ago?

    Just some thoughts.

I don't think the Bible teaches either. I used to believe the Henry Morris young earth view. That's what we studied in college and what I learned as a child. But there's a lot of questions I have about dinosaurs, fossil fuels, early man (like Neanderthals) and then there's the background radiation, big bang, lots to consider. What I believe is complicated to explain because I don't have a solid handle on all of it. I am comfortable with an old earth and lean that way (Hugh Ross impresses me). I haven't completely ruled out young earth because anything is possible with God. Ultimately, I don't give it much thought and I certainly don't consider it a hill to die on. When pressed, I fall on the old earth side of the equation. I think interpretations in the Bible are open to both views. :nod

Yeah, we have common core now. When I sub, and read the lesson plans, I can't believe what they want me to do. So I ask the kids if they know how to "carry." They don't. They don't even know simple addition facts. I say, "well kids, today we're doing things a little differently. Here's how I learned it....." Kids caught on immediately and found it easier than that stupid common core (which I as a 28 year veteran of teaching and with a masters degree in education find it impossible to understand).

I had a chess club and we used to compete. I've had kids win trophies. I would love to say to a whiny kid

Kid "But I didn't win anything!"
Me "Cuz you suck at chess. Try marbles."

Not according to Jesus. I should know; I gave an entire presentation on the historical Jesus back in January.

Well, let me help you find the evidence. In my video debunking a William Lane Craig video, I showed where the 6,000 number comes from, and I debunked William Lane Craig's arguments against YEC that he made in a particular video.
