I am a little confused by a couple of verses.

In James 4:7b it says, ‘Resist the devil, and he will flee from you’.

In Matthew 5:39, Jesus said ‘Ye resist not evil’.

I equate evil as an essence as something that comes from the devil, so how are we expected to resist the devil when Jesus tells us not to resist evil?

I hope someone is able to enlighten me.

that is not what is being said compare But I tell you not to resist an "evil person" . But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.
38 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:

39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

40 And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.

41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.

42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.

44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?

47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?

48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
4 From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?

2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.

3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.

4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?

6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

7 Submit ( first step) yourselves therefore to God. ( step 2 -then we can start to resist) Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

8 ( 3rd step) Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.

10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

11 Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.

12 There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?
the evil person is not the devil in Matthew . he cant physically slap

Matthew 5:39 was about revenge. Jesus is saying (if I may paraphrase) not to match evil with evil (eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth), for that will make you just as evil.

That is completely different from resisting evil in yourself.

That's a good question, I noticed that myself. What I concluded was, it's talking about different things...

Resist the devil and he will flee from you, is talking about when temptation comes to you or your mind. Resist that! Take those thoughts captive to Christ and cast them out of your head unto the Lord. Then listen to your heart & conscience and do not sin by giving in to the temptation. Think about something else, pray...

Ye resist not evil...is when someone wrongs you, or brings you persecution or trouble. Don't resist that. Run if you can, whatever, but no fight or revenge. Eventually the (anti-Crist) system will stop you or come knocking on the door to arrest you for not having the mark of the beast...I think we're supposed to let them lead us before their judge or whatever and either take the mark (denying God), or be killed. (But at that point, it would be over in a moment and to die would be to gain, because we'd be with the Lord).

The original question is answered completely, let me just add that this world contains evil that is not limited to satan. Our own thoughts are a classic example: evil thoughts may get planted in our mind by the evil one like fiery darts. Then he can go elsewhere and have us doing his bidding.

We can also dream up evil thoughts all by ourselves, no demon required. The world also feeds us such ideas. This is such a classic example because it's the battlefield of Spiritual warfare.

Here's the NKJV rendering of Mat 5:39 in Modern English (instead of the KJV Late Middle English which we do not speak)
Mat 5:39 But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.
The verse gives an example of what an evil person might do; slap you in the face. That is humiliating and insulting but it's not worth going to blows about since one of you could wind up dead.
The devil isn't trying to insult you or humiliate you with a face slap. The devil wants you permanently dead in this age and the age to come.

One person is your adversary because he is under the influence of the devil.
The Devil hates and wants to destroy all of mankind because we are created in the image and likeness of God.

hope that helps

James 4:7 says to resist the devil and he will flee
What we are to resist is the temptations Satan brings before us like Jesus when Satan tempted Him in the beginning of His ministry, Matthew 4:1-1.

Matthew 5:39 Ye resist not evil
I have to agree with KevinK in not taking revenge on the evil found in those who come against you.
