MarkG: Yes, well, it's increasingly not unusual for husbands and grandads like you to wear an earring, right?

(Re. nipple: yes, it's become quite popular to pierce them, whether one or both. Parlors have certainly become quite specialized.)

Absolutely!!
I'll never be old before my time, farouk!

Mark.
Sounds like there's no danger of this happening, anyway...

If you think about it, of course, young men were piercing their ear (it used to be one; now both) in the early 80s. The double piercing of ears by women (young women AND their moms) was becoming popular in the late 70s. So for example, a young man of 25 who pierced his ear in 1982 would be 55 now. A young woman of 19 who double pierced her ears in 1979 would be 52 now; and if her mom aged 49 did it, too, in 1979, she would now be 82.

These whole innovative practices have become very thoroughly established.

for his glory:

PS: re. the regret side of things, I can only really understand regrets if the tattoo involved a message which the person is now thoroughly disenchanted with; otherwise, its acquisition is a kind of road marker of a stage of life, really. (Piercings, of course, are simple to remove.)

MarkG: Actually I've not worn my earrings for quite a while now.

I voted under 18, I believe I was maybe 5 or 6 at the time and it really hurt for me, because I was kicking things over in the department store I got them done at. But I was a child I didn't know the religious attachment to ear piercing and body ink. Still have the holes in my ears from when I was a child.

Thank-you for your comments.

Interesting what you say about the 'religious attachment'. Could you maybe expand a bit on what you mean, please?

Thanks again for your post.

PS: MarkG:

Obviously you like the idea of ear piercing.

You've taken it out now, but do you also recommend nipple piercing?

MarkG:

Ty.

Ear piercing doesn't hurt so much, but your choice of doing your nipples must have been based on some factor other than the pain level, then ... :)

Tatts, and the moderate pain involved, have become so well established to make most people resigned to any pain (unless they use a numbing agent, however).

Tattoo's do hurt but it is "different" to the pain of a nipple piercing.
My wife says it wouldn't hurt as much as childbirth!
I can't argue with that!!

MarkG:

Well, it always seems to me that piercing nipples requires a kind of specialist dedication (as opposed to doing ears, or getting a tattoo). Unless, of course, the person doesn't really realize in advance what he is letting himself in for, pain-wise...

I was thinking about what you were saying several posts back:

Yes, I think back when I got mine and the "stage" I was going through. That was 10 years ago and definitely feel different about it now. So true we all go through different stages. Now that I am 50 I think back about all of the decisions I made during my entire life......
For_his_glory said subsequently she doesn’t regret her second holes but seems to think that tattoos are ‘on impluse’:

I don't regret getting the second piercing, but that's where it stops with me. As far as tattoos that's a personal preference, but something one has to live with for the rest of their lives …We need to make wise choices and stay away from the impulse.
I agree of course about not doing things on impulse, but I guess, too that they don’t need to be on impulse, do they?

In terms of what you yourself were saying, when you had yours done 10 years ago it seems from what you say that it was all part of the way you were feeling at the time; part of the ‘stage’ that you were going through. Hardly just an impulse, right?

As such, I guess there’s little point in airbrushing the past in one’s mind, about it, especially if it’s basically harmless (whether or not ppl ever get any new or adaptations of ink, faith based or not; an entirely separate thing.) Just as second holes are nothing to be regretted, there's not too much point in cultivating negative feelings about one's ink, either, really.

(Hope this makes some sense?)
