Answer: Perhaps the most important commonality between Evangelical Christians and Jehovah’s Witnesses is our belief and trust in the Bible as the ultimate authority inspired by God, on issues concerning God and his expectations for us. While we may understand things differently, Jehovah’s Witnesses are to be highly commended for their dependence on and diligence in studying the Holy Scriptures to know God and His will. Like the Bereans, we would be wise to examine all things in life, in light of the Scriptures. To that end, we shall examine verses of the New World Translation (the version of the Bible published by their Watchtower Society) to clear up some common misunderstandings.

A Rose by any other name…

Christians get their name from being followers and worshipers of Jesus Christ, first called “Christians†in Antioch during Paul’s ministry (Acts 11:26). Paul repeatedly made it clear that to be a Christian was to be a witness to men concerning the person of Christ, to be a witness to the words and works of Christ. Jehovah’s Witnesses, on the other hand, believe that we are to focus our worship exclusively on God the Father (who is sometimes referred to in the Bible as “Jehovahâ€Â.) This name, however, was a hybrid name created by Christians by adding vowels to the tetragrammaton “YHWH,†which was the original rendering which we now know as “Yahweh†in the Hebrew and “Jehovah†in the Greek. Evangelical Christians understand Jesus to be God in all His fullness, equal in deity, but different in function from that of God the Father. Christians acknowledge that one of the names for God the Father is Jehovah; however, there are many other names and titles which the scriptures use in reference to God the Father.

Jehovah’s Witnesses understand Jesus to be Michael the Archangel, and categorically deny His deity. As we shall see, if we understand Jesus to be anything other than God, many verses present obvious contradictions. However, we know that God’s Word is inerrant and does not contradict itself. Therefore, we must understand the truth of God’s Word in a way that is consistent and faithful to His revelation. You will notice that these same verses lack any contradiction if we understand Jesus to be God the Sonâ€â€the fullness of God in bodily formâ€â€who surrendered His rights to be the suffering servant and sacrifice for our sin. Truth and Unity

Jesus’ substitutionary atonement was accepted for one reason: God accepts only His own righteousness. The righteousness of a man or an angel is insufficient to hold up to the holy and perfect standard of God’s righteous law. Jesus was the only suitable sacrifice because He was the righteousness of God, and as God’s law required shed blood, Jesus took on flesh so that He might be a ransom for all who believe in His name.

Notice that if we understand Jesus to be God incarnate, then all the above verses can be understood to be true and mutually consistent in their claims. They can also be understood clearly with plain reason, taken at face value. However, if we attempt to suggest that Jesus is something less than Godâ€â€Michael the archangelâ€â€then these verses are mutually exclusive and cannot both be true, when taken in their natural context. Therefore, the truth of God’s Word necessitates that we must come to another understanding in which all Scripture is unified, interconnected, interdependent, inerrant and true. That unifying truth can be found only in the person and deity of Jesus Christ. May we see the truth revealed in Scripture as it is, not as we would each have it to be and may God receive all the glory.

Hello, I am also being Bible studied by some great JW's. ( My wife introduced me to the truth)
I had a big misunderstanding about not going to Heaven and the Soul issue. But after scripture evidence was pointed to my direction, I saw that Christianity deceived me from Biblical truth even though it was staring at me all the time, even KJV if read properly would clarify everything NWT has in its teachings. I was just blind and misleaded by fasle preaching of churches I used to attend.
I have a clear understanding that Adam was literally meant to live for ever on Earth and the rest of his ascendants.Jesus role was to be the Last Adam and give us our Paradise Earth back after Armageddon and live the way Jehovah wanted Adam to live.
Now that is really something to look forward to and every Christian must know about this wonderful revelation

Charles Taze Russell was a charlatan who denied the existence of Hell, the Trinity and the deity of Christ. He believed the whole world was wrong and that he alone could interpret scripture.

In light of this, he predicted the world would end in 1914. Duh! So much for his infallibility. Similarly his followers have believed that the world would end on several occasions. There is a pattern here. False revelation = no revelation. You are playing guessing games and anybody who believes that you know anything is stupid.

There is no dissent allowed in the church. You can't think for yourself. If you do then you are disfellowshipped and cut off from friends and family. That's why you travel in pairs door to door. You don't trust anyone. They are debriefed after their door to door calls so they can perfect their brainwashing techniques. Some church.

I know that the Holy Spirit is real. I don't need a bumpkin like Charles Taze Russell to tell me that he is not. I know that Jesus is Lord. He is also real to me. So there we have two parts of the Trinity. The third would be God, the Father. One, two and three parts of God spells T-R-I-N-I-T-Y.

I don't know what your Bible says but all Christian Bibles say that Jesus is our high priest and is God.

You have invented things such as soul sleep, earthly and heavenly classes and distort the idea of the 144000 to mean heavenly spirit brothers. It is all very convenient that you have your own Bible. Nowhere does the word Jehovah appear in the Bible. It is a distortion of the Hebrew, YWHW, just as your religion is a distortion of the Word of God. How anyone can fall for this tripe is beyond me?

By the way when you come to my door, don't expect a warm welcome. You'll have to wait Jesus till returns. He believes in Hell.

You should become a Christian because God loves you and Satan does not.

I am confused about your statement Jesus IS GOD!!!!!

I need more proof, as The Bible cannot condradict itself.

Here is a good argument

Matthew 3:16 After being baptized Jesus immediately came up from the water; and, look! the heavens were opened up, and he saw descending like a dove God’s spirit coming upon him.
17 Look! Also, there was a voice from the heavens that said: “This is my Son, the beloved, whom I have approved.â€Â

Too someone who believes God is Jesus then this would occur:
Then Jesus went into a trance, and left his body in spirit form and then acted as the voice in Heaven, which is impossible

You have a vague understanding of the Bible, my friend.
Jesus is indeed very much mistaken as God but of God he has only in the LIKENESS and PERSONALITY of him, but seperate beings regardless, As he is The Son of God.

That is why when Jesus says in the Scriptures,
You have seen the Father through me,
My Father and I are as one.
These are explainations that he is the closest in all creation which resembles The Father as he has his Likeness and Personality. He is i extreme close UNION with God which has confused alot of Christians regardless.
Also mentioned Jesus refers he is not equal to The Father and submissive to him,
Prayers he makes are to someone else 'The Father, not back to himself, that would make Jesus crazy, which he is indeed not, Like having multiple person disorder. But again The Bible proves he had no mental illness and Jesus sincerely prayed to His Father in heaven.

I have a 5 year son Moses, he has the likeness of me but he isnt me, Otherwise he would be like a conjoined twin and he is not. Jesus is not a conjoined twin of God also. But also his Son.

Here's the thing though you and I are of two very different faiths, and we use two very very different Bibles. So since your Bible has been changed it's unlikely to agree with mine. So I can give you things from the Bible that proves Jesus is GOD but your "Bible" will not agree therefor you most likely will not agree. Here you go anyway...

(The phrase, "to call upon the name of the Lord" is a phrase used to designate prayer.)

(LORD here is YHWH, the name of God as revealed in Exodus 3:14. Therefore, this quote, dealing with God Himself is attributed to Jesus.)

The New World Translation

The whole was revised for the one-volume edition in 1961, and subsequently revised in 1970 and 1984.

The publisher of this version has never made public the names of the translators. But former members of the Governing Body of the Jehovah's Witnesses organization have identified the members of the committee as Nathan H. Knorr (President of the organization), Frederick W. Franz (Vice-President), George D. Gangas, and Albert D. Schroeder. According to Raymond V. Franz, the "principal translator of the Society's New World Translation" was Frederick W. Franz. (1) According to M. James Penton, "to all intents and purposes the New World Translation is the work of one man, Frederick Franz." (2) Franz afterwards became the President of the organization, from 1977 to 1992, and was responsible for the revisions.

The Forward to the first edition of the New Testament (1950) explained the need for the version, and also indicated the reason for its name: "It befits the significant time of transition from the old world to the righteous new world that translations of the Scriptures today should as far as possible eliminate the misleading influence of religious traditions which have their roots in paganism." (p.7, emphasis added.)

The New Testament adheres to the text of Westcott & Hort. It is a fairly literal translation, for the most part, but it does have some peculiar non-literal renderings. These are the result of the committee's efforts to conform the version to the doctrines of the Jehovah's Witnesses. "Jehovah" is given as a translation for kurios (Lord) in the New Testament whenever the Father is meant, but not when it refers to Christ, the Son. "Torture stake" is put instead of "cross" because the Jehovah's Witnesses believe that the cross is an idolatrous symbol introduced by the Roman Catholic Church. And because this sect teaches that Jesus Christ was merely an angel, the version reflects a Unitarian bias in several places.

Examples of Unitarian bias:

• Gen. 1:1-2. "In [the] beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth proved to be formless and waste and there was darkness upon the surface of [the] watery deep; and God's active force was moving to and fro over the surface of the waters." The ruach elohim ("Spirit of God") of the Hebrew is interpreted "God's active force" in order to avoid the Trinitarian understanding of the "Spirit."

• Zech. 12:10. "...they will look upon the one whom they have pierced..." Here the Hebrew "look upon me whom they have pierced," in which God is the speaker, has been altered in order to avoid the implication that the one who is to be pierced (on the cross) is God.
  John 1:1. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was a god." Instead of the literal "the Word was God," we have "a god," which the sect interprets as "an angelic being."

In his book Crisis of Conscience Raymond Franz, a former member of the Governing Body of the Jehovah's Witnesses, describes some interesting conversations that he had with the principal translator of the version, who happened to be his uncle. He recounts that between 1965 and 1971, while engaged in preparing a Bible dictionary (published in 1971 under the title Aid to Bible Understanding), he sought guidance on a number of questions from Frederick Franz, who "was acknowledged as the organization's principal Bible scholar." We reproduce below several paragraphs from Crisis of Conscience (pages 21-24) for the light they shed upon the New World Translation and one of its translators, and also for the wise observations of the author concerning the interpretation of the Bible.

• The Society's vice president, Fred Franz, was acknowledged as the organization's principal Bible scholar. On a number of occasions I went to his office to inquire about points. To my surprise he frequently directed me to Bible commentaries, saying, "Why don't you see what Adam Clarke says, or what Cooke says," or, if the subject primarily related to the Hebrew Scriptures, "what the Soncino commentaries say." Our Bethel Library contained shelf after shelf after shelf filled with such commentaries. Since they were the product of scholars of other religions, however, I had not given much importance to them, and, along with others in the department, felt some hesitancy, even distrust, as to using them. As Karl Klein, a senior member of the Writing Department, sometimes very bluntly expressed it, using these commentaries was "sucking at the t-ts of Babylon the Great," the empire of false religion according to the Society's interpretation of the great Harlot of Revelation.
  
  The more I looked up information in these commentaries, however, the more deeply impressed I was by the firm belief in the divine inspiration of the Scriptures the vast majority expressed. I was impressed even more so by the fact that, though some were written as early as the eighteenth century, the information was generally very worthwhile and accurate. I could not help but compare this with our own publications which, often within a few years, became "out of date" and ceased to be published. It was not that I felt these commentaries to be without error by any means; but the good certainly seemed to outweigh the occasional points I felt to be mistaken.
  
  When the subjects of "Older Man [Elder]" and "Overseer" were assigned to me, research into the Scriptures themselves soon made evident that the congregational form of supervision employed by us did not conform to the first-century arrangements. (We had no bodies of elders in our congregations; one man in each congregation was the sole "overseer.") Somewhat disturbed, I approached my uncle with the evidence. Again his response took me by surprise. "Don't try to understand the Scriptures on the basis of what you see today in the organization," he said, and added, "Keep the Aid book pure." I had always looked upon the organization as God's one channel for dispensing truth and so this counsel sounded unusual to say the least. When I pointed out that the Society's New World Translation rendering of Acts, chapter fourteen, verse 23, evidently inserted the words "to office" in connection with the appointment of elders and that this somewhat altered the sense, he said, "Why don't you check it in some other translations that may not be as biased." [Later editions of the New World Translation dropped the added phrase. The first edition had read: "Moreover, they appointed older men to office for them in the congregation and, offering prayer with fastings, they committed them to Jehovah in whom they had become believers."] I walked out of his office wondering if I had actually heard what I had heard. In future days I was to remind him of these statements on more than one occasion during Governing Body sessions.
  
  That conversation strongly affected my approach to Scripture. I deeply appreciated the integrity toward Scriptural truth his remarks indicated. I began to appreciate more than ever before how vitally important context was in discerning the meaning of any part of Scripture, and that realization seemed to be true of others of the group who were working regularly on the Aid project. We also came to realize the need to let the Bible define its own terms rather than simply taking some previously held view or letting an English dictionary definition control. We began to make greater use of the Hebrew and Greek lexicons in the Bethel library, and concordances that were based on the original language words rather than on English translations.
  
  It was an education and it was also very humbling, for we came to appreciate that our understanding of Scripture was far less than we had thought, that we were not the advanced Bible scholars we thought we were. I personally had been on such a "treadmill" of activity over the previous twenty-five years that, although reading through the Bible several times, I had never been able to do such serious, detailed research into the Scriptures, in fact never felt great need to do so since it was assumed that others were doing it for me. The two courses at Gilead School I had attended were so tightly programmed that they gave little time for meditation, for unhurried investigation and analysis.
  
  Now having both time and access to the extra Bible helps, the lexicons, commentaries, Hebrew and Greek concordances, and so forth, was an aid. But above all it was seeing the need always to let the context guide, always to let the Scriptures themselves control, that made the major difference. There was no overnight change of viewpoint but, over a period of years, a gradual deepening of appreciation of the crucial need to let God's Word speak for itself to the fullest extent possible. I could see why those one-hundred and two-hundred-year-old commentaries in our Bethel library were comparatively timeless in their value. The very fact of their verse-by-verse approach more or less obligated them to stay within the contextual meaning and thereby considerably restricted them from taking excursions into sectarian views or interpretive flights of fancy.
  
  Thus the material in the Aid book relating to elders and the congregational direction in Bible times was very different from the position then held by Jehovah's Witnesses, where a more or less "monarchical" arrangement had prevailed. The Scriptural arrangement of bodies of elders had been summarily ended in 1932 by Judge Rutherford due to a lack of cooperation on the part of some elders with the Society's programs and policies. His position as President gave Rutherford the necesary authority to take such a stand and all congregations were invited to vote for the disbanding of bodies of elders and their replacement by a Society-appointed "Service Director." For the next forty years there were no bodies of elders in the congregations. That is why the New World Translation of the Bible published by the Society in the 1950's regularly used the rendering "older men" rather than "elders," a then officially discredited term.

Forward to the 1984 Edition

It is a very responsible thing to translate the Holy Scriptures from their original languages of Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek into modern speech. Translating the Holy Scriptures means rendering into another language the thoughts and sayings of Jehovah God, the heavenly Author of this sacred library of sixty-six books that holy men of long ago were inspired to write down for our benefit today.

That is a very sobering thought. The translators of this work, who fear and love the Divine Author of the Holy Scriptures, feel toward Him a special responsibility to transmit his thoughts and declarations as accurately as possible. They also feel a responsibility toward the searching readers who depend upon a translation of the inspired Word of the Most High God for their everlasting salvation.

It was with such a sense of solemn responsibility that over the course of many years this committee of dedicated men have produced the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures. The entire work was originally released in six volumes, from 1950 to 1960. From the start it was the desire of the translators to have all these volumes brought together into one book, inasmuch as the Holy Scriptures are in actuality one book by the One Author. While the original volumes contained marginal references and footnotes, the revised one-volume edition, released in 1961, contained neither footnotes nor marginal references. A second revision was released in 1970 and a third revison with footnotes followed in 1971. In 1969 the committee released The Kingdom Interlinear Translation of the Greek Scriptures, which presented under the Greek text revised by Westcott and Hort (1948 reprint) a literal word-for-word translation into English. During the past 34 years the New World Translation has been translated in part or in its entirety into ten other languages, with a total printing and distribution surpassing 39 million.

This new edition is not just a refinement of the translated text beyond its already previous revisions, but it has been expanded to include a complete updating and revision of the marginal (cross) references that were initially presented in English, from 1950 to 1960.

This 1984 revision has been released by us to the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania for printing, translation into other leading languages and distribution. We thus make it available with a deep sense of gratitude to the Divine Author of the Holy Scriptures, who has so privileged us and in whose spirit we have trusted in producing this revision. We pray for his blessing upon those who use this translation for spiritual advancement.

A Statistical Comparison of Editions
of the Greek New Testament


Using a database of various readings, I compared Scrivener's Textus Receptus (representing the readings underlying the King James Version) with four critical texts, and identified 4165 translatable differences adopted by either Tregelles 1857, Tischendorf 1869, Westcott & Hort 1881, or Nestle-Aland 1979.

Westcott & Hort vs. Textus Receptus: Which is Superior?

• The New Testament was inspired by God, and came from the pens of its writers or their amanuenses in infallible form, free from any defect of any sort, including scribal mistakes. However, God in His providence did not choose to protect that infallible original text from alterations and corruptions in the copying and printing process. Scribes and printers made both accidental (usually) and deliberate (occasionally) changes in the Greek text as they copied it. As a result, the surviving manuscript copies of the New Testament differ among themselves in numerous details.
  
  Many attempts have been made (even as early as the second century A.D.) to sort through the manuscripts of the New Testament and weed out the errors and mistakes of copyists, in order to restore the text to its original apostolic form. Those who have made such attempts have differed one from another in the resources at their disposal, their own personal abilities as text editors, and the principles followed in trying to restore the original text of the New Testament.
  
  The two most famous attempts at restoring the original text of the New Testament are the Textus Receptus, dating from the Reformation and post-Reformation era, and the Greek text of B. F. Westcott and F. J. A. Hort, first published in 1881. These two texts were based on differing collections of manuscripts, following differing textual principles, at different stages in the on-going process of the discovery and evaluation of surviving New Testament manuscripts, and, not surprisingly, with often differing results. (1) There is much dispute today about which of these texts is a more faithful representation of the original form of the Greek New Testament, and it is this question which will be addressed in this study: Which is the superior Greek New Testament, the Textus Receptus/"Received Text" or the "Critical Text" of Westcott and Hort?

It is truly sad that so many people are mislead by false leaders, false teachers, false prophets, false apostles, false preachers ....

Yes, the New World Translation is a perverted book, not a holy book .... !!! I have no respect for a distorted and false translation, like the New World Translation that the JW's use.

Jesus is God, and there is no way around that. Scripture is clear, the Greek is clear. Jesus is not a god, or a little god. Jesus is God Almighty. Jesus is Creator. Jesus is Lord. Jesus is Savior. Jesus is the only way that you can get to heaven.

Everyone will bow to the name of Jesus, even if not while you are alive now ... You will bow to Jesus someday ... Why not bow to Jesus, and accept Jesus as your Lord, God and Savior, right now, before it's too late?

You will not have a second chance .... Don't miss out on the best gift that you could ever receive ... Jesus is waiting with open arms, to receive you as one of His children ....

Best advise I ever found rejecting JW teachings was this which is:

"The first verse is Revelation 1:8. I am reading from the Jehovah's Witness Bible, and it reads, "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says Jehovah God. Ask the Witness, "What does Alpha and Omega mean?" They'll reply,"The beginning and the end." Then ask them, "How many Alphas and Omegas can you have?" They'll answer, "Only one." Make sure you get this point across, there is only one Alpha and Omega.

Then turn to Revelation 22:12-13 which says, "Look I am coming quickly, and the reward I give is with me....I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end." Ask the Witnesses, "Who do you say the Alpha and Omega is?" They will say, "Jehovah." Now take a careful look. The Alpha and Omega in verse twelve is coming quickly. Let's see who is speaking in verse twelve.

Look at verse sixteen, "I Jesus, sent my angel to bear witness to you people of these things for the congregations. I am the root and the offspring of David, the bright morning star." It is Jesus speaking in verse twelve. If there is any doubt go to verse 20 which says, "He that bears witness of these things says, 'Yes; I am coming quickly' Amen come Lord Jesus." So it is clear that the Alpha and the Omega in verse twelve is Jesus. Here is a strong proof text that Jesus is God because both Jehovah and Jesus are called the Alpha and the Omega.

Another pair of verses that are effective when used together are Isaiah 44:6 and Revelation 1:17-18. Isaiah 44:6 says, "This is what Jehovah has said, 'The king of Israel and the Repurchaser of him, Jehovah of armies, I am the first and I am the last.'" Ask the Witnesses how many firsts and lasts can you have? It's obvious to anyone you can only have one first and one last. Ask them, "Who is the first and the last?" They will say, "Jehovah." Now turn to Revelation 1:17-18 which says, "Do not be fearful; I am the First and the Last, and the living one; and I became dead but look! I am living forever." Who is speaking here? Obviously, it is Jesus for He died but is now alive, and guess what? He is called the First and the Last. Here again we see Jesus is God. "

Here is a good argument

Too someone who believes God is Jesus then this would occur:
Then Jesus went into a trance, and left his body in spirit form and then acted as the voice in Heaven, which is impossible

You have a vague understanding of the Bible, my friend.
Jesus is indeed very much mistaken as God but of God he has only in the LIKENESS and PERSONALITY of him, but seperate beings regardless, As he is The Son of God.

That is why when Jesus says in the Scriptures,
You have seen the Father through me,
My Father and I are as one.
These are explainations that he is the closest in all creation which resembles The Father as he has his Likeness and Personality. He is i extreme close UNION with God which has confused alot of Christians regardless.
Also mentioned Jesus refers he is not equal to The Father and submissive to him,
Prayers he makes are to someone else 'The Father, not back to himself, that would make Jesus crazy, which he is indeed not, Like having multiple person disorder. But again The Bible proves he had no mental illness and Jesus sincerely prayed to His Father in heaven.

I have a 5 year son Moses, he has the likeness of me but he isnt me, Otherwise he would be like a conjoined twin and he is not. Jesus is not a conjoined twin of God also. But also his Son.

I could understand your confusion if you do not believe that God can be more than one place at a time. However, I believe that our Almighty Creator can be any place at any time in all time. He consumes all of time and space and yet is outside of all time and space. If Jesus was only created in the likeness of the Father then he would not be the ONLY begotten Son of God. We read in the very beggining that God created Adam in his image and likeness. If your understanding is correct, then Adam would be every bit as equal to God as Jesus. However, we read in 1 Cor 15:45 that the first Adam was made a living soul and the last Adam (refering to Jesus) was made a quickening (life giving) spirit. What are their similarities? What are their differences? They are similar in the state that Adam and Jesus are the only two humans that came into this earth with God's image AND likeness. Meaning that in them dwelt the Spirit of God incased in a body of flesh. After Adam sinned, he literally he was cursed with sickness and death (spritually and physically). All humans after him were born in Adam's likeness. Which is why Jesus said you must be born again. Because although we are alive to the flesh, we are dead to the spirit of God unless His spirit is born in us by the Holy Spirit. I believe that we all understand that Jesus was born without sin because he was literally begotten of the Holy Spirit. So he was fully alive in the Spirit as well as in the flesh. What makes Jesus different from Adam, is the fact that the Spirit of God within him is not just a spirit of God, but actually THE Spirit of God himself (which makes him the only begotten of the Father). Now because the spirit of God himself dwelt in the body of a mortal man and defeated the curse of sin and death, the debt has been paid for all of mankind to be redeemed from that curse brought upon us through Adam's sin. Man had to pay for the sins of man to satisfy God's justice and Holiness. Which is why the Word had to become flesh. Back to my original point.

Now just because God descended out of glory to take the place of a mortal man, does that mean that the scales of space and time were left uncontrolled for 33 years while he walked this earth? Absolutely not. Because God is a spirit and is eternal, he is eternally on the throne. Jesus is the bodily manifistation of Jehovah to us, and God himself is the only one who can give life. If Jesus is not God, than how can he be the life giving Spirit?

Thanks to God in all his glory that we can now be conformed once again into his image AND likeness through the life that Jesus gives. We can truly be born again in the Spirit and must be,if we are to ever see the Kingdom of Heaven and have the relationship with God that he intended.

Funny mosesjoel accused me on a different topic of not having scripture to back up my claims, yet on this very topic I posted a ton of scripture and he has yet to respond I wonder why.

Most cults require their membership to isolate themselves from all who are not of their cult. They are under bondage to the teachings of their cult leadership, and all else is considered satanic; quite the opposite of the teachings of the Word of God.

The Jehovah's Witnesses who are not born again will only witness Jehovah when he tells them to depart for He never knew them.
