I love Matthew 5.
How can anyone not love it?
It's one of the greatest chapters in the Bible.
Why would anyone want to argue about it?

No arguing.
But when I read chapter 5, I get the feeling a trip to Rome is necessary.
To visit the Pope.
For confession.
Which I don't even believe in.
At least not to him.

How about "from him"? The Pope needs to confess his sins to someone, and you could certainly apply for the position of the Pope's Confessor. It will be good for his soul.

Well...I'm totally lost.
Well I made my point clear, standing my ground
Be my guest.
But I'm going to stand on the water Peter tried to. I actually understand why it's impossible for most. Jesus could and I'm a stepping. I might get drown. And of course I will be told I'm doing it wrong... But I have found no more secure a footing than upon the water.

Couldn't read through all the threads.
But it seems to me today that most divorce cases are based on other stuff other than adultery and physical or emotional violence. Not trying to take us back tho.
The life of the celebrities are what some are living today: experimenting with people to find a never-pleasing match. The journey is for ever. But with Christ at the centre of our marriages, everything falls in place, if we agree to let it stay.

The line for what constitutes an acceptable divorce is fluid. It isn't static. People are different and that is why there are different reasons for divorce.

The whole "Hollywood" marriage and divorce days are long gone. No one bothers any longer. Shacking up rules the day and single parent families are the largest demographic in America and Europe.

No one bothers to commit. No one has enough grace, forgiveness and love with in themselves to commit to anything or anyone.
That was yesterday... Today it's all about me and my feelings. (For the next five minutes at least)

Do you really mean that you don't know? Have you read the OT and NT and their definitions of adultery?

Yes I do. As I understand it they are as follows.

Sexual adultery.
Non sexual adultery - looking at a someone else lusfully
Spiritual adultery. Matthew 12:39

So what I'm trying to get at is what constitutes adultery that permits divorce?

No arguing.

Trip to the pope?
You have catholicism ingrained inside of you.
Pointless too say you are not catholic.

What are you doing reviving a thread from 4 years ago?
Why do you DISLIKE catholicism?
It has some great teachings.

And my post from 2016 was tongue in cheek.
Matthew 5 is the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount.
If this chapter doesn't make one feel like a sinner, then I don't
know what would.

It really makes us note how lowly we are and how much we need
God in our lives and how great it is that God sent His Son to atone
for our sins.

OK.
What shall we discuss?
How about marriage and divorce?
I's what this thread is about.

If a person gets a divorce,,,,they cannot remarry.
Why?

(we'll get this thread going again).
