I Threw Away Ungodly Music - Liberating Experience

After much prayer and an objective look at my music, I threw away/deleted about 2/3 of my music reciently.

Growing up, I was really into hard rock, metal, and some gangster rap. I came to Christ about 5 years ago and the Holy Spirit has lead me further and further away from much of this kind of music.

Many of these CD's and mp3's have been sitting dormant for about 2 years. I decided it was time to let go of the Ungodly and begin replacing it with artists that have a message more compatible with my faith.

I filled my ears with filth and obscenity for a long time. It was finally time to grow up and it was a liberating experience knowing that I'm following God's will.

Funny how that always seems to happen, the same thing happened to me when I found Christ, I used to love to listen to Country Music, I knew all of their names. But when I found Christ, I simply fell away and lost all interest in it. All of my music is Christian now. I would not trade it for the world. Praise Be To God.

I did the same thing after about two years into christ, but i aslo believe that only christ can lead one to do that, I probably being doing the same with tv soon, soo much junk.

congratz, i am in too far with my music in fact i don't want to give it up, i just find almost all Christian bands to be very bad. 12 stones and day of fire are pretty good IMHO, i listen to them often.

I agree that a lot of Christian bands don't sound that good. I think lot of it has to do with lower budget, and part of it has to do with lack of talent of the song writers. Sometimes bands will sound better with a good producer who knows how to bring the best sound out of them. A lot of the secular bands even seem to sound a better if they have a good producer. 12 Stones are pretty good but I believe they have a good producer to work with. They are more on a secular level than a Christian level in that regard. The members of 12 Stones are Christians and some of their lyrics reflect their Christian beliefs, but I don't know if they consider themselves "Christian Rock". But they really don't need to. You can tell they have faith in Jesus by listening to their music. I don't think I have heard Day of Fire so I can't comment on them.

Having said that, I own a lot of Christian music that I think sounds good. That satisfies me for the most part. I just feel a lot better after hearing Christian lyrics than secular lyrics, allthough I listen to some secular that has good clean lyrics. But the Christian lyrics do a lot more for me spiritually than even clean secular lyrics. Of course, I stay away from the "bad" stuff.

I also don't believe that it is wrong to listen to secular music, we all have to use our own discernment in this area. I am sure most TV shows and movies we watch are "secular", as there really aren't a lot of Christian movies out there.

I can definitely see that some, for lack of a better way of saying it, "Non Christian" music is pretty questionable and bad. Some of the metal stuff, gansta rap and sexually explicit music is just offenisve.

However, not all "secular" music is bad nor does it need to be purged from a Christian's collection. Of course everyone needs to make their own decisions on that but I find a lot of "Secular" music to be inspirational and about life and such. Some of my favorite bands that I do not feel are questionable are...

- Cold Play: great all around music with some inspirational messages
- U2: Listen closely to some of their lyrics, especially their most recent stuff, and you will find it to be very spiritual in nature. Makes sense since Bono is a devout Catholic
- Five for Fighting: He songs will downright get you teary eyed
- Daughtry: Great debut album and he also sung back up vocals for a Third Day song on their most recent album

These are just a few. I have come to know of one group and a solo artist that are both Christian that are great. Third Day is excellent. I liked their newest album so much I just went out and purchased their Chronology Volume II (2001-2006) off of iTunes this past weekend. Francesca Battistelli is an excellent young solo artist on the Christian music scene that I also like a lot.

I guess the short of it is not all "Secular" music is bad. Before anyone gets rid of their music, take a long hard look to discern what is and is not healthy to listen to from a spiritual point of view. Just my 2 cents.

i understand that, but my calling to do so was from the Lord , and i only tell others why i did that and not compe;l them to do so.

Totally understand. Just want to caution those before they start thinking that any music that is not directly, literally discussing Christian views as not of God. Most music is about living and life in general. People pour their hearts into it and there is some great stuff out there that is not of the Christian / Gospel genre.
