Whispers,we went to the moon in less then 7 years, the military is the government, and most of the airports that are public are old military fields in my state.

Just saying.the ww2 build up is rather amazing.three such fields for my tiny nas.all are used.

Government in an of itself isn't efficient with quick results, but that isn't because its incapable, but how its purposely built. The more complex the system it wants to implement and the more drastic the change, the slower it will be. However it can be quite efficient in situations where the power structure is made to be efficient, like the military. The parts in any government systems deals with policy and review. The government also isn't efficient money wise because its not built like a business, the point isn't about profit, but about providing the most with the resources it has. Its non profit, so Amtrak for example is dependent on funding. Private business have to constantly hit investment marks and profit margins to keep investors, government programs just have to function.

Now, will premiums go down because the government gets involved? Possibly if there are caps in place and relies on funding, however if a government program is the only option limiters would be in place, so that is where the private industry shines. Private is expensive but has a quicker return rate, public is slower but much cheaper. That is the general idea anyway.

    Good points.

The private sector depends on the satisfaction of its customers to survive. If the customers are not satisfied with the product and service, they will go to another supplier and the company will loose market share and revenues and might go out of business.

The government has no such incentives. If the government's customers are not satisfied they have very little they can do about it. They can't go to another government that provides a better service and the government employees who oversee the program do not answer to the public. They answer to a political appointee. Getting things changed for the better requires an enormous effort over many years. (But I can change a supplier in an instant.) For example take the ongoing issues with the Veterans administration. Should veterans get better treatment? Yes? That will require a bigger military budget. Is there any push-back on a bigger military budget? You bet.

And, remember that any time the government provides something "for free", they pay for it with money they take from people who earned it or they pay for it by printing money with no backing and drive prices up by increasing the money supply. That means people's cost of living goes up faster than their wages. So it still comes out of the worker's pocket.

    Less government is better government.

If you think a bank savings account is for investing, we've found the problem. If you have more than $10,000 in such accounts, you're really hurting yourself.

Or just open a savings account paying 0.25% interest.
Make it an IRA so you won't pay taxes on the interest until you take it out.
