Pardon me, Dave, while I borrow your podium.

Is there something wrong with having a sense of humor? I genuinely believe some people do not have a sense of humor because they believe it is beneath them to poke fun at life. Now, I don't laugh at everything. Funerals, for instance, aren't funny. But sometimes a little bit of laughter in the middle of seriousness is a good thing.

I know I always talk about my son's cancer, but I learned so much during these last few years and having a sense of humor during tough times was one of them. So here's a story:

A few days after they transferred my son from ICU to a regular floor, the doctors decided he needed to go back to ICU until his breathing improved. So while we were waiting for the guy to bring up a wheelchair (the one they had on the floor was too small for my teenage son -- he's 6'4) the nurses decided they were going to test out the little wheelchair. They laughed at each other for not being able to fit their "big butts" (their words, not mine) in the little wheelchair. My son, my mom and I all laughed as these nurses did their best to lighten the mood during a very stressful, traumatic time. I will always remember that day and how those nurses made us smile, even on our way back to ICU. Although my smile may have been a little bit forced (I was extremely scared), it really did help. In fact, I praise God for that laughter. It made that day a little more bearable.

Now, I ask you all. Is there anything wrong with a little laughter sometimes? Can you back that up with Scripture? Is there Scripture that talks about laughter being a good thing?

Oh, and my apologies in advance if I've offended anyone.

I believe it is neither Biblical or unBiblical to have a sense of humor. The scriptures don't address it, as far as I know. I think as long as the humor is of clean nature and not intended to cause harm, it is okay. :yes

I can't look at the world we live in and think God doesn't have a sense of humor!! :)

I hope this doesn't sound weird, but do you think Jesus farted?

Ofcourse, he was human!

But since He was perfect, perhaps He had perfect digestion and therefore didn't fart.

I can really relate to what you're saying here JoJo, sometimes laughter during the most serious of times is such a healthy thing.

Last summer my family gathered together as my dad entered into the final stages of esophageal cancer. Not a funny time, not at all. But, when my sisters and my mom were discussing with him funeral arrangements and what kind of casket he wanted he quipped about being buried in a cardboard box. My dad was always full of laughter and jokes and he wasn't one for frills and fancy, so the discussion about him being buried in a cardboard box probably would have raised more than a few eyebrows had anyone not familiar with us overheard us.

The kicker came though when, sitting with the funeral director, one of the first caskets he showed them was made of...you guessed it...cardboard. My sisters and mom first tried to suppress their laughter, then it burst out right there in the office of the funeral director. Who knows what he thought of mom and my sisters, but the laughter we shared as they told dad that there really were cardboard caskets was joyous and healing.

Eccleslastes 3 speaks of there being a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance. I'm glad we spent the time we had left with Dad more in laughter and joy than sorrow and weeping. I think every joke our family ever shared was shared again at least once last summer. All the stories and memories of the goofy things that happened to us as a family, which even if we didn't laugh about it at the time, was good for a laugh last summer. There has been more than enough time to weep since dad was laid to rest.

OK, due to the preview feature that the board has, I've seen the elevating discussion between Dave and Gojubrian. Dave, if one eats, one farts. Perfect digestion notwithstanding, farting is nothing more than air moving along with waste through the system. Ergo, sure, He farted while He was incarnate.
Can anyone, anyone at all explain why farting is just so dang funny? I'm not denying that it is, but I've never been able to figure out why?

Different strokes for different folks. ;)

Okay, Dave, *ahem* passing gas is not a sin. If the body didn't release the built up air, it would blow up like a balloon. Flatulence is part of our perfectly designed bodies. Like Brian said, Jesus was human, so I believe we can safely assume that He would have experienced bodily functions.

(was that tactful?)

Yes, but maybe Jesus's farts didn't stink.

Dora, thank you for sharing that very heartwarming story!!! I can certainly appreciate the relief of humor in certain situations. What wonderful memories you must have of your dad.

I think it's a boy thing. They have cooties, you know, and that can do things to a person. :rolling

Much more tactful than this:
